Sophia Rose’s Review

I don’t even pay attention these days to the blurb or the title when I spot that it’s by Melinda Leigh and it’s in her Bree Taggert series.  I’m well beyond auto-buy at this point and would be more shocked if I wasn’t a hundred percent into the latest release- and I was.  I tried to hold back and relish it slowly, but nope, I two-sat Catch Her Death.

Catch Her Death is the seventh entry in the Bree Taggert series that is loosely connected to the earlier Scarlett Falls and Morgan Dane series.  Each book presents a new case, but carries on the character and relationship development to previous books.  And, fun times for Morgan Dane fans, she gets a few solid scenes in this latest.

Catch Her Death has a blockbuster opening when Bree and several members of her department serve a warrant and get a pretty ugly customer off the streets.  Yay for Greta the K-9 and Officer Collins’ getting their first big call-in to duty.  But, while Bree’s getting threatened by the puss-pocket’s equally evil family members for taking down one of theirs, Dana’s date night ends in a blood bath.

Bree, Matt, the sheriff’s department and their families are all put on alert as danger comes from more than one direction and they have to solve two cases to keep everyone safe.  I love that Bree is super good at her job, but she still has step-back moments when she feels the vulnerability of finally having a love life and family- people to care about who are hostages of fate.  Matt is standing solid right there with her.  In this book, it was grand to also get some scenes from Bree’s ex-detective partner now nanny, Dana getting a chance at happy with Matt’s retired MMA fighting older brother Nolan during a tough, vulnerable time for Dana.  I hope to see patient Nolan win her over as the series progresses.

I loved seeing how both cases were whittled away at bit of evidence and witnesses and strong police work including lots of K-9 action along the way.  I read this in the height of summer and the biting chill of an upstate NY winter was perfect seasonal setting for cooling me off and causing complications for Bree to save the day.

All in all, I was flipping pages and on a reading terror as the suspense grew steadily to the surprising twist and the big finish.  Those who enjoy getting lots of depth with good policing action to their romantic suspense set in a rural county with an engaging cast should give this series a go.

Thirteen Thousand Lonely Nights

Situated in a time and place where prejudice and conventional norms are widespread, a millennial grappled with a persistent fear —an apprehension of spending thirty-five years in solitude. Is it possible to be lonely for that long? As one delves into the pages of this intriguing narrative, an extraordinary tale unfolds, exploring the intricacies of existence and unfiltered vulnerability that eventually leads to self-discovery and resilience.

Thirteen Thousand Lonely Nights, by Kendall Kenneth Folkhardt, is an intense proclamation of deeply held beliefs, as well as an intimately written love letter to the essence of life itself. Beyond the boundaries of a standard memoir, this narrative stands as a complex prism, refracting life’s invaluable lessons through a myriad of hues and creating an enduring impact on those who partake in this transformative journey. From the start of the book, the narrator immediately warns its readers that all that unfolds in the narrative is written based on how it was experienced —raw, unapologetic, and shameless. It gives an all-encompassing tale of the narrator’s life, from the actions that were done to the thoughts embedded and the emotions associated with the experience.

The memoir weaves the thread of the narrator’s life, stitching together a narrative that resonates with the reader’s own journey. The book invites introspection, urging readers to reflect on their own beliefs, choices, and experiences, inviting a touching connection between the text and their lives. Folkhardt’s story navigates the complicated pathways of human emotion, painting a vivid canvas where joy, sorrow, triumph, and despair intertwine in a symphony that mirrors the complex nature of life itself. The narrative is a testament to the human capacity to withstand trials and a beautiful letter to the human resolve that allows us to emerge stronger, wiser, and more resilient. With unflinching candor, the author captures the essence of being human —the moments of fragility that shape us and the fortitude that propels us forward.

With honest takes on life and its different aspects, Thirteen Thousand Lonely Nights will surely transcend the pages and stick itself into the reader’s mind. I highly recommend this to anyone undergoing any roadblocks in their life, whether in family, love, career, or the like. Let this book serve as a reminder that there are moments when we will be tested, and it is up to us if we wish to turn it into a life sentence or a means to push ourselves forward.

Riding Horses Changed My Life

Deanie Humphrys-Dunne Author Interview

The Adventures of Cocoa and Cream – Remarkable Twin Ponies follows the experiences of two ponies who discover their forever home with two young girls. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?

My family owned a riding school when I was a child so I wanted that setting. Riding horses changed my life. My objective was to emphasize that horses can have a huge impact on a child’s life. Also, there is a scene in the book where Mama makes stew with dumplings. She encourages the dumplings to puff up because the stew is depending on them. My mom did that, so it was a way to honor her.

What were some educational aspects that were important for you to include in this children’s book?

I hoped to introduce children to some of the aspects of the care of ponies. If the young readers were familiar with riding, they may have known some of the details, but if not, I wanted them to learn more about what is involved with life on a farm.

The illustrations in this book are breathtaking. The realistic drawings definitely appeal to older elementary readers. What was the art collaboration process like with illustrator Mirjana Buveska?

I loved working with Mirjana. I interviewed several artists to illustrate this book, and I felt Mirjana had exceptional talent. She captured the personalities of the animals and people in the story perfectly.

Do you have more adventures planned for Cocoa and Cream?

Yes, I plan to create a series about them. I don’t have a time frame yet.

Inspire Curiosity

Steven Joseph Author Interview

Snoodles in Space follows a group of extraterrestrial visitors to Earth who are in dire need of help to save their leader and their ship. What was the inspiration for your story?

I was reading a news story about how we are producing less scientists, and I had the thought about a planet that had no scientists left because everyone was discouraged to become one. So, I wanted to write a story about discouragement but also put a light on the effect of encouragement as well.

What were some educational aspects that were important for you to include in this children’s book?

I wanted to inspire curiosity, and taking on complex problems and having fun at the same time. Every Snoodles book also has to have a museum built. This book has a museum on space exploration. The last book had an art museum. There will be an aquarium in the next book. Kids should be excited about going to a museum, even more so these days.

The art in this book is fantastic, giving the story a comic-book quality. What was the art collaboration process like with illustrator Andy Case?

It was amazing and the most fun. I did the story blocks describing what I have in my head and Andy always amplified everything in his drawings. After he did the book, I flew to England just to visit Andy in Nottingham. I plan a second trip in January. I can’t thank him enough. We talk on Zoom and I have to hold back breaking down to cry because he has moved me so much!

Do you have more stories planned about the Snoodles? If so, what can your fans expect in the next story and when will it be available?

Yes! Snoodles in Space, Episode 2: The Zoodles Strike Back! I introduce Grumpy Grimy Groodleman, and the Groodle powered by stinky Grool! I do a revision of sorts on the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Story. I make the kids who didn’t do too well and probably were shamed because of the negative publicity, and turn them into the heroes in the book.

In the award-winning book “Snoodles, Kidoodles, Poodles, and Lots and Lots of Noodles,” Steven Joseph and Andy Case introduced us to a world where everyone was happy because of one man, Herbie Snoodleman, the inventor of the Snoodlemoblie, powered solely by noodles. It had replaced Sour Croodleman’s Krautmobile, which ran on sauerkraut and made everyone quite a bit cranky.
In this follow-up book, when the Zoodle Kidoodles from the planet Zoodle abduct Norman Noodle and Sally Stroodle, the Zoodle Kidoodles threaten to take all of Earth’s noodles— unless they perform the necessary brain operation on their grand leader, Cloodle the Grand Roodle, and fix their spaceship’s failing engines.
The one problem? Norman Noodle and Sally Stroodle are simple bakers. Sour Croodleman’s Prickly Peppered Purple Propulsion Powered Pickle invention is their only hope, but will he unite with Herbie Snoodleman to save the planet?
The answer is here, in this Wackadoodle Tale from Outer Space!
