The Trouble with Ancestry

Genealogy is fun, but it has never been an entirely innocent pastime. The establishment (or fabrication) of pedigrees has been essential to the policing of social and racial hierarchies. The Nazis, however, made it a murderous obsession. A banal family record could be a license for advancement or a death warrant. According to the historian […]

Growing Up on Moan Street

The high-speed train from Naples to Rome takes a little over an hour and costs about ten euros; you can run up for a breakfast meeting and still make it back in time to pick the kids up from school. In Domenico Starnone’s novels, though, that journey has overtones of danger and myth. Naples, where […]

Why Aren’t Cops Held to Account?

In 1987 lawyers for a Black inmate on Georgia’s death row presented the Supreme Court with evidence of the extreme racial disparity in the state’s administration of the death penalty. Their client, Warren McCleskey, had been convicted of killing a white police officer. In Georgia, Black murder defendants whose victims were white were almost twenty-two […]

A Bit Against The Grain

Penn Fawn Author Interview

The Burglar is the fast-paced and captivating story of Springer, a man who awakens to find himself face-to-face with an intruder stumbling around his apartment. Where did the idea for your thrilling short story come from?

It must have come from a movie I saw back in 1986 that I can’t remember the name of. Although I do remember the year I saw it, strangely enough, I don’t remember the film’s name. So, somewhere out there, there is an old flick that is somewhat similar to The Burglar.

There is a saying, “There’s nothing new under the sun.” So, although the flick was not on my mind when I sat down to type, I think it must have been lurking somewhere in my subconscious when I put my fingers to my keyboard.

I don’t remember exactly, but I think that in the film, there were two intruders who broke into a man’s home while he and his wife were there. I also don’t remember whether there was any weed smoking involved, like in The Burglar, but I do recall the homeowner happily getting drunk with one of the intruders while, get this, the other one seduced, as opposed to assaulted, his wife in their bedroom.

I didn’t get the feeling that the “victim” would care if he found out. I remember him being so indifferent and drunk, that to the intruder he contentedly drank with he said, “You will tell my wife that I put up a good fight, won’t you?” Or something along those lines.

His wife was just as indifferent because not only wasn’t she assaulted, she welcomed the second burglar’s attention. Go figure, or try to figure out what kind of mindset that husband and wife had. For me, it was a mind-boggling film that definitely left an imprint on my mind.

What are some things that you find interesting about the human condition that you think make for great fiction?

Everything about the human condition makes for great fiction, so it’s nice to read books that go a bit against the grain. You know, those that don’t read like a cliché.

Like I said earlier, there is a saying, “There’s nothing new under the sun,” so to find that one book or movie that stands out from the others because the creator tweaked what has become hackneyed, is always precious.

Was it important for you to deliver a moral to readers as you developed the characters of Springer and the burglar?

It wasn’t important to me at all. My aim was to write a story that was out of the ordinary, not to espouse any particular position or another.

Can readers expect to see more from you soon?

Yes, of course. I am always writing. I have an independent online bookstore business that I have to keep going. Bookstore is the operative word. I write and publish more than just short stories. For that matter, those who know more about me know that I started out writing and continue to write and publish epic dark fantasy novels also.

The Burglar, Penn Fawn’s first short story, and the 1st place winner of the Literary Titan’s Book Award, is urban fiction, aka street literature, which is known for being set in a city landscape featuring a dark mood or tone.

The Burglar is that with a twist. The culprit’s inexperience, jitters, and nerves are at the forefront of what pushes this daring tale forward, where his name and almost nothing about his identity is ever disclosed. An examination of his mindset is what brings this fast-paced action feature to its twisted end.

The Burglar is the opening tale from a series of other short-form writings the author plans to individually release. They will then be published as a compilation.

Survival At All Costs

Veronique Racine Author Interview

The Wanderer’s Quest takes readers on a journey to a bleak and devastated future Earth along with Raydr and Madan, both escaping their own horrors. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?

The inspiration comes from my own bleak outlook of the future, if humanity persists in its destructive ways. Climate change is happening at an alarming pace, whether people acknowledge it or not – or want to acknowledge it. In the novel, a pandemic destroys most of mankind, and the industries that we have created run amok, as they would if there no longer were human tenders to see to nuclear power plants and nuclear waste as well as chemical plants. What we do, what we have done, what we will do, has consequences. We must learn to think in sustainable terms, renewable terms, rather than think of profit because, in the long run, money might just become completely irrelevant.

There was a lot of time spent crafting the character traits in this novel. What was the most important factor for you to get right in your characters?

The most important factor of the personality of my characters was to show their inner dilemma. Survival at all costs has a cost: the loss of belief in oneself. I wanted to show how people who have been shattered by inconceivable pain can rise back up from the depths of their misery.

When you first sat down to write this story, did you know where you were going, or did the twists come as you were writing?

I develop a story in my head first. When I started writing, I knew the general outline of the plot, but a lot of details were added after. It’s a long process to craft a novel!

What is the next book you are working on, and when will it be available?

I am currently working on a new project called Pioneer: The Volunteer. I expect it to be done in the next 6 months. Hopefully available soon after that. I have also written a children’s book, which I hope to make available soon. And I sent some of my poetry to a few contests, crossing fingers that it could be available to readers soon.

Disease, radiation, and violent storms have ravaged the earth, laying waste to all that was civilised and good. Now, it is every man for himself in the struggle for survival against tyrannical despots who would exploit the innocent and vulnerable for their own gain.

Madan, fifteen years on the run after the death of his family and collapse of his city, is growing tired, and desperate.

Raydr, eight years escaped from horrific captivity, has learned the hard way the sacrifices it takes to survive in this world.

Thrown together by circumstance and a shared need for vengeance, can these two learn to trust each other in a kill-or-be-killed world? As they begin to open themselves up to the possibility of hope – hope for revenge, for the chance of a real future – they will find out just how important the actions of two people can be, and what the cost of vengeance really is.

Magical Armies

M.A.N. Author Interview

Broken Sky follows a Savior destined to battle monsters who seeks out the Sorcerer behind them and battles to end the destruction once and for all. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?

It all stems from a small hobby of mine as a child, namely reading CYOA (Choose Your Own Adventure) stories, I often participated in choosing “powers,” “locations,” and other parts of the setting, and would sometimes daydream in my head about how the story would form from the choices made. Once I started writing (this is my 7th book) and became more experienced, I added my spin on it, added the concept of a grudge that surpassed time, space, and multiple lifetimes, and came up with Broken Sky. With the various worlds, “powers,” and “settings,” I felt like it would be best to start with the staples of the fantasy genre: a warrior, a savior, an evil sorcerer trying to take over the world, and magical armies, and to build from there.

In fantasy novels, it’s easy to get carried away with the magical powers characters have. How did you balance the use of supernatural powers?

I focused on showing power that was necessary to get the point across; I made a concerted effort to show character and personality and to move events along while also following the logic of nature’s elements.

What was the chosen theme of the novel, or did it develop organically as you were writing?

Generally, when I write, I start with an idea, then I flesh out the plot, the settings, the characters, the big events, and the personalities. I rarely define the theme during the outlining phase, and 9 times out of 10, it develops organically as I look to fill in the blanks and establish the fine details. Broken Sky is no different. I did not originally plan for a theme that can be summarized as “there are certain actions one can’t come back from,” also known as the ‘point of no return.’

What is the next book you are working on, and when will it be published?

My next book (book number 8) is Black Glove: a new take on the vigilante/superhero theme, one with superpowered gangs and high-level technology, but also one with potent messages and social commentary sown deep into the plot. Black Glove is scheduled to be published in Winter 2023.

Fueled by loss and vengeance, the Savior vows to not just vanquish the monsters who threaten his home, but the Sorcerer behind them. After facing hordes of chimeric beasts, he finally comes face to face with the Sorcerer, the subject of his ire, only…something goes wrong. When the two clash, the sky is shattered and broken, and both men find themselves flung throughout time and space and sent to a world unlike their own. They experience this again and again, and no matter the world, it all comes down to a battle between the two: Man vs. Man, Sorcerer vs. Savior, in a fight to the end.
