The Life of the Party

While our three most recent presidents have little in common as politicians, they do share one critical political skill—the ability to repurpose a pejorative, to take a bit of language deployed by detractors and then turn it to their own ends. Obama managed it with “Obamacare”: today, even in an increasingly red Florida, which leads […]

This time, leaving Earth was not Nyx’s choice…

After her latest trip off-planet, Nyx Fortuna has every intention of keeping both feet firmly on Earth Between. Between trying to figure out why the Kumir have been hunting her friend Seth, searching for a way to destroy the Harvester of Worlds, and getting frustrated by the glacially slow return of her memories, she doesn’t have any time for planet-hopping.

Unfortunately, the universe has other plans. When she’s abducted from Earth Between, Nyx finds herself in the remote reaches of the universe, on planets unconnected to the Station’s ley lines. Her only hope lies in mastering the portal magic she’s only just discovered she has. But even if she can manage its use, does she have enough magic—and determination—to find her way back home?

I’ve been enjoying the world created by Manus in the Nyx Fortuna series. It’s a blend of urban fantasy and science fiction with travel between planets. Nyx, our heroine, is a Guardian of a Waystation on Earth Between. She protects the ley lines between planet pubs, checks passports and enforces the rules. Her station is magical. It’s bigger on the inside. The world-building is fantastic and with each book we learn more.

Listening to this series in the order of its release is necessary to follow the overall series arc.. Friendships are forged, and there is an arc regarding the Harvester of Worlds that Nyx wears around her neck.

After the events of the Guardian of Shadows, Nyx is happy to be back at the station. She is training with a new weapon, prodding her memories and enjoying events on Earth Between, but all of that changes when she is abducted. Nyx ends up in parts of the universe not connected to the station’s ley lines. She experiments with her own untested portal magic. Meanwhile, Seth and her friends at the station are trying desperately to reach her.

It was an excellent edition to the series. I enjoyed watching Nyx test her skills and seeing development with the romantic aspects of the storyline. Danger, new worlds and plenty of action await you!

Desireé Ketchum has become the voice of Nyx and the others. From her pacing to tone, she enhances this well-written tale. The audio production was well done. I highly recommend listening to this series.

A Dinosaur Named Alone: Where Will I Go?

Somewhere out there exists a beautiful world with a sky stretching far beyond the imagination. This world is vast, beautiful, and breathtaking. One little dinosaur has entered the world filled with dreams of the land beyond the caverns of her birth. She sets out to see the beauty and expanse of the sky for herself but makes some stops along the way. What she finds is that everyone is not so eager to leave the caves they call home. Despite their discouraging words and warnings of impending doom, the little dinosaur is determined to make her way into the wide world beyond.

A Dinosaur Named Alone, by O.L. Flubermin, is a delightful children’s picture book written to inspire young readers to take risks and stand tall in the face of adversity. Alone, the book’s main character is challenged at every turn by the slimes, a court comprised of many less-than-helpful insects, and a group of mushrooms who have nothing in the way of good news for her. True to herself and true to her purpose, little Alone forges on. She is a shining example of both strength of character and strength of spirit. Young readers will revel in her determination. They will be right by her side as she meets with a shirk their snide comments and forges bravely onward.

Flubermin’s illustrations are simply phenomenal. Cover to cover, the vibrant colors will mesmerize readers. There is a magical quality to not only the storyline but also the artwork. Contained within the depictions of the cave-dwelling creatures, there are exquisite details and careful touches that, at times, give the illusion that the pages themselves are a brilliant light source.

I am giving A Dinosaur Named Alone, by O.L. Flubermin, a resounding 5 out of 5 stars. Flubermin’s work is stunning in every way needed to draw in young readers, communicate a solid message of self-worth and purpose, and give them a story they will carry with them long after the last page. I highly recommend A Dinosaur Named Alone to anyone looking for a children’s book with a valuable life lesson that resides outside the box.

Why Not Win?: Reflections on a Fifty-Year Journey from the Segregated South to America’s Board Rooms

Larry D. Thornton’s literary creation, Why Not Win?, unveils an intimate exploration of an individual’s transformative odyssey. Set against the racially segregated landscape of 1960s Montgomery, Alabama, Thornton’s narrative readers us on an enlightening voyage chronicling his evolution from a beleaguered student to a towering figure within his industry, eventually assuming the mantle of mentorship. The book traverses his valiant struggles against the insidious specter of prejudice, his unyielding quest to claim the distinction of being the first African American to helm a McDonald’s franchise and his ascension to a pivotal role as a board member within a prominent financial establishment.

Woven seamlessly throughout Thornton’s engrossing chronicle is a tapestry of astute life counsel, universally applicable and indelibly etched into the minds of readers. The book stands as a testament to the indomitable human spirit, a stirring testament to resilience and self-propelled growth. Thornton’s life trajectory is eloquently captured within these pages, encapsulating the heart-wrenching trials and the euphoric victories that punctuate his passage. Each chapter is not only a chapter in Thornton’s life but also a chapter in the reader’s own journey. The words of wisdom that grace the culmination of each section transcend mere prose, serving as a relatable and motivational thread that elegantly binds the narrative together. The author’s artful storytelling renders his experiences accessible, allowing readers to vicariously partake in the challenges he faced and the milestones he achieved.

A distinctive attribute of the book lies in its poignant portrayal of the scourge of racial prejudice and the personal tribulations that Thornton bravely confronted. These experiences magnify his eventual triumphs, serving as an even more potent source of inspiration for all those who dare to dream against adversity. Central themes of gratitude, steadfast consistency, and principled living will resonate with readers traversing their unique trajectories. Thornton’s evolution from an academically challenged student to a professional exemplifies the formidable power of unwavering determination. The book offers a powerful reminder that transformation is within the grasp of those who commit themselves resolutely.

Why Not Win? stands as an invaluable compendium of life lessons, elegantly wrapped within a narrative that never relinquishes its hold on the reader’s attention. Thornton’s journey, an odyssey of triumph over tribulation, radiates as a beacon of hope, particularly for those in the throes of their own life challenges and transitions.

Augusta

Augusta is a beautiful mix of fiction and nonfiction anecdotes about a tenacious woman working to keep her family afloat in the early 1900s. Based on the author’s grandmother and family stories, Augusta tells the tale of a young farm girl married off at thirteen, abandoned, and then remarried to another abusive man. Her second husband, Ottis, is fired, leaving Augusta to be their family’s sole provider. While the storm of calamity continues to affect her family, Augusta must make the hardest decision of her life: whether to keep her youngest, Lottie, or allow her to be adopted by a wealthy family.

Augusta is a heart-wrenching novel centering on the unique circumstances of a woman in a time period where dependency on marriage to a man for survival was commonplace. Augusta represents a silent yet resilient generation of women who frugally kept their families fed and clothed throughout poverty-stricken years. Many of these women turned to each other and created pockets of communities and villages to ensure mutual aid. The writing captured this well. Augusta’s pain is clear, but so is her love for those around her. She was forced into a marriage and motherhood at an extremely young age and thus relied on her community to guide her through adulthood. Her sacrifices became an important parable for those of us who live in the present.

I enjoyed how the author filled in some gaps to complete Augusta’s story. The story of Al and Angie was particularly touching. They served as a silver lining and restored optimism back into the story. I also liked the historically accurate descriptions of appliances, money, and the like. Augusta’s wide-eyed incredulity towards appliances is interesting to witness. While modern readers will be interested in the simplicity of it, Augusta is impressed by what it can do. In a lot of ways, readers can still feel a connection to Augusta amidst the decades of distance.

Augusta is an essential story for all readers and will continue to be important for years to come.

Failure Is Part Of Learning

Author Interview
William Gray Author Interview

CJ Silvers and the Long Ride follows a young girl as she attends her first wakeboard lesson who is afraid and wants to quit when things get hard. What was the inspiration for your story?

I was inspired by my daughter attending a girls’ ride wakeboard event. While there, I saw many girls being scared to get hurt and the negative emotions around not succeeding. I also saw many families supporting their daughters. As the event progressed, I saw falling/failing become less emotional, and small successes drive the girls to succeed. This was important to me as my daughter was one of the girls.

Was there anything from your own life that you put into the characters in your book?

The main character CJ Silvers is based on my daughter, Cassidy. She is now nine, and I am very proud that she has the confidence to try new things. I also tried to capture my wife Rebecca’s spirit and how she talks to Cassidy to help her grow up.

What were some educational aspects that were important for you to include in this children’s book?

I think it was important to show that failure is part of learning and getting better. Also, failure itself is not fun, but with practice and guidance, everyone can achieve great things.

Where does the next book in the series take the characters?

CJ Silvers and her family will be having a Christmas adventure. New characters will be introduced, and a clear message that presents are not the most important part of the holiday season will be delivered.

I Aspire To Offer Hope

Dedrick L. Moone Author Interview

Joy Comes: A Story of Fatherhood follows a boy who, despite growing up in the absence of his father, battles life’s adversities and triumphs as an exceptional father himself. What inspired the idea behind this inspiring children’s book?

I opened up about my personal journey of growing up without a father during a speech that I delivered at Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina on February 22, 2023. I shared the pain, anger, and confusion that I experienced during those challenging times. However, what I wanted to emphasize the most was the beautiful transformation that emerged from those difficult moments.

The audience was deeply touched by my openness. It was in that profound moment that I realized my story couldn’t end there. It was then that I made the decision to turn my speech into a book titled Joy Comes: A Story of Fatherhood. Through this book, I aspire to offer a glimmer of hope to single parents and their children, using the character of Lamar as a shining example of resilience and strength.

Initially, I had planned to surprise everyone with the book’s release on Father’s Day. However, out of respect for all the incredible dads out there, I decided to wait and release it on July 15, 2023, which happens to be National Give Something Away Day. I believe that by sharing my personal story, I can give others the gift of healing.

Lamar’s support system is described as a beacon of inspiration. Can you tell us more about how you developed these characters and their influence on Lamar?

Uncle Levon holds a special place in my heart, much like my Uncle Tony. In the absence of my father, he has been a central father figure in my life, my very first superhero. Recently, he shared a poignant story with me, reminding me that I am not his first nephew, but his second. His first nephew was my late cousin Kendrick, who tragically passed away from Leukemia at the tender age of 3. At the time, I was just 1 year old, and Uncle Tony was a mere 19 years old. Kendrick’s passing had a profound impact on Uncle Tony, my mom Wanda, and my granny Beulah. Together, they made a vow to protect me and ensure I wouldn’t suffer a similar fate. Their love for me became a healing force in their lives, while also serving as a shield to safeguard my own.

My name is a reflection of Kendrick’s, a tribute that carries immense meaning. To my granny, I wasn’t just her grandson; she saw me as her own son. As a result, she kept me close by her side. Granny and I shared an unbreakable bond in that regard. She was not only my grandmother but also my best friend, teaching me invaluable life lessons on parenthood, friendship, leadership, prayer, and life. Uncle Tony, on the other hand, always came to my rescue, no matter the circumstances, even if it meant sacrificing his own well-being. He taught me what it means to be a man. My mom instilled in me the values of hard work and the importance of perseverance, showing me how to navigate life’s obstacles with unwavering determination.

I learned invaluable lessons about resilience, compassion, and strength through the love and guidance of Granny, Uncle Tony, my mom, and so many others. They each played a part in shaping me into the person that I am today. On that note, I’m forever grateful for their presence in my life.

Many readers can relate to the challenges Lamar faced. What advice would you give to young readers who are experiencing similar circumstances and looking for guidance and solace?

I would assure them that God has a purpose for their suffering. He is using it to bring about something greater, both for His kingdom and for their own lives. I would encourage them to place their trust not only in God but also in the process of refinement they are currently undergoing. In times of doubt or uncertainty, I would direct them to find solace and strength in Psalms 23 and 121. These Psalms are filled with promises that remind us of God’s unwavering presence, guidance, and protection over us.

While I’ve said all of that, I realize that prayer may not always be enough, and that’s perfectly okay. On that note, I would encourage them to consider talking to someone they trust about the possibility of seeking counseling. Opening up to a professional can provide additional tools and perspectives to help navigate their journey towards healing and restoration.

But most of all, I would remind them that they are not alone and that there is hope for a brighter future beyond their current pain.

What is the next book that you are working on and when will it be available?

I’m excited about the future of Lamar’s series and the meaningful stories that will unfold. Each book will continue to explore different themes and offer readers valuable insights and perspectives.

I’m currently working on developing a Christmas Story featuring Lamar. I envision this story to be filled with humor and a valuable lesson that resonates with readers. My plan is to release it in time for this holiday season.

Looking ahead, the next story in the series will focus on mental health. It’s an important topic that deserves attention, and I’m passionate about addressing it through Lamar’s narrative. I anticipate releasing this book in either May or June of 2025, allowing ample time to delve into the complexities of mental health with care and sensitivity.

Please stay tuned for more updates and announcements as I continue to bring Lamar to life.
