The New York Times bestselling “new Agatha Christie” (Air Mail) Ruth Ware returns with this adrenaline-fueled thriller that combines Mr. and Mrs. Smith with The Fugitive about a woman in a race against time to clear her name and find her husband’s murderer.
Hired by companies to break into buildings and hack security systems, Jack and her husband, Gabe, are the best penetration specialists in the business. But after a routine assignment goes horribly wrong, Jack arrives home to find her husband dead. To add to her horror, the police are closing in on their suspect—her.
Suddenly on the run and quickly running out of options, Jack must decide who she can trust as she circles closer to the real killer in this unputdownable and heart-pounding mystery from an author whose “propulsive prose keeps readers on the hook and refuses to let anyone off until all has been revealed” (Shelf Awareness).

Do you ever experience anxiety when reading or listening to a book? Certain films, tv dramas, and stories do this to me, especially when there is a race against time or, in Jack’s case, being caught by the police all while hiding, breaking and entering. Not to mention zero funds, improver clothes, and endless injuries. Who can you trust? Who is framing you? Eek gads!
I love Ware’s books and love them even more when they are narrated by Imogen Church. Church captures the tension, exhaustion, fear. She truly enhances the story as she brings these characters to life.
Jack has a wonderful life with her husband, Gabe. The two of them own their own business, testing the security of companies. Jack breeches the buildings with Gabe in her ear, guiding her. She steals data and then Gabe analyzes their software for vulnerabilities. After a breech gone wrong, Jack arrives home to find Gabe murdered and from there things go terribly, terribly wrong.
The tale that unfolds was set at a record pace, making it hard to set down. Did I agree with Jack’s decisions? Not necessarily, but the woman is tenacious. While she failed in some aspects upfront, she more than makes up for it as she closes in on who is behind the murder and frame job.
Twists, turns, and chase scenes will have you holding your breath. The “why” was chilling and felt horribly realistic, especially in today’s political and economic climate. Ware did a wonderful job of allowing me to feel Jack’s emotions from her fear to her anger, and I became completely caught up in the story.
Fans of suspense thrillers and heart-pounding action will want to grab Zero Days on audio.
