New York Times bestselling author Jill Shalvis returns to Sunrise Cove with a beguiling, lighthearted story about fresh starts, second chances and true love.

When Harper Shaw’s life falls apart, she knows it’s time for a change. She removes everything that doesn’t spark joy—from her soul-sucking job to eating kale to making lists—and sets off for the last place she was happy, Lake Tahoe (who wouldn’t feel good there, right?) to fulfill her dream of opening her own bakery.

With her Sugar Pine Bakery in between a tavern, owned by sexy, grumpy Bodie Campbell, and a bookstore, run by her new BFF, she feels a peace she’s never experienced since…well, forever.. Then she meets Ivy, a teenage runaway, who barrels into her heart. She sees a lot of herself in Ivy and takes her under her wing, but the teenager has secrets…

When those secrets explode, it changes Harper’s new world, and she’ll learn, it’s never too late to start over, it’s never too late to figure out your life, and best of all, it’s never too late to let yourself believe in love.

What do you do when life sucks and you need a do-over? You pack up and move to the place where you last remember being truly happy and open a bakery. Sounds perfect, right?

Harper Shaw does just that and her first met cute with Bodie Campbell, the owner of the local tavern to the left of her bakery, was hilarious. From that moment, I was all in. Shalvis has a way of pulling me in and offering delicious, heartfelt stories with characters I want to befriend.

On the other side of her bakery, soon to be called Sugar Pine Bakery, is a bookshop owned by her new BFF. Well, it will take some delicious cookies and heart to hearts, but it’s coming. Turns out Bodie and his brothers own the stripe of store fronts including the bakery, Harper will be leasing. Did I mention I love stories involving brothers? Hehe.

A runaway, grandmas and some cute critters rounded out the tale. Harper has some baggage, but so does Bodie. I loved seeing them come together and figure things out. Family, shenanigans and a dash of heat made this tale a win for me. Side romances, found family and touching nature, rounded out the tale. I cannot wait to return for more stories.

Fans of small-town romance, families and foodie novels will want to settle in with The Sweetheart List or pack it in their beach bag.

The Greater Good

In his novel, The Greater Good: A Dystopian Novel of Divided America, author Seth Daniel Parker masterfully crafts a compelling work of dystopian fiction. In it, readers envision a future where a fractured America has given rise to two distinct nations, each embracing divergent ideologies—one socialist, the other capitalist. Blending elements of dystopian literature, science fiction, and philosophical inquiry, Parker’s narrative takes readers on an immersive journey.

The story centers around Thomas, an ordinary citizen whose life is shattered when he is unjustly convicted of “crimes against society” and sentenced to an enlightenment center. Driven by unwavering loyalty, Thomas initially believes that this confinement presents an opportunity to ascend the social hierarchy and attain the coveted rank of “Blue.” However, his illusions are shattered as he gradually uncovers the true nature of his nation—a revelation that challenges his deep-seated beliefs. With the assistance of Virgil, a fellow inmate, Thomas embarks on a treacherous path in his quest for liberation, hoping to reconcile the fragmented United States. Can a single individual truly alter the course of history?

Parker’s exceptional ability to reflect elements of our present society within this dystopian landscape renders his work even more engrossing. The events leading to America’s disintegration depicted in the novel possess a disconcerting plausibility, making the reader acutely aware of the potential consequences of our present choices. The author’s world-building prowess is on full display, leaving no stone unturned and providing unequivocal answers to lingering questions surrounding the nation’s downfall.

Thomas emerges as a captivating protagonist, captivating readers with his transformation from a misguided loyalist into a resolute champion of freedom. Parker subjects his lead character to a tumultuous mental odyssey, presenting a realistic portrayal of Thomas’ psychological journey. The supporting cast is equally compelling, particularly Virgil, who assumes the role of Thomas’ guide to the elusive “truth.” Regardless of whether readers personally align with Parker’s viewpoints, the ideas he presents are undeniably thought-provoking. The enthralling conversations on ideology between Thomas and Virgil serve as a testament to the author’s ability to stimulate intellectual engagement. Indeed, the novel bears a striking resemblance to a contemporary interpretation of Orwell’s seminal work, 1984.

The Greater Good: A Dystopian Novel of Divided America is filled with depth and intricacies that could potentially have resulted in a dry narrative; Parker skillfully navigates these challenges, ensuring that the overarching plot maintains an enthralling pace. A wealth of action sequences and unexpected twists guarantees an exhilarating reading experience. For those seeking a profoundly reflective and captivating literary work, I recommend Seth Daniel Parker’s novel.

Resembling A Moth

Resembling a Moth by John Queor is a compelling anthology of deeply introspective poetry that takes readers on a profound journey of self-discovery and introspection. Through his meticulously crafted verses, Queor masterfully touches on themes of self-reflection and transformation, leaving an indelible mark on the reader’s consciousness. With resonantly titled pieces such as “There’s a Silver Lining to My Suffering,” the poet artfully constructs imagery that ignites a gamut of emotions in his readers.

This collection sees Queor traverse a plethora of subjects, skillfully interlacing elements of astral projection, divorce, nirvana, and cigarettes, to name a few. Each poem is a heartfelt reflection of Queor’s own experiences, spanning across his lifetime from childhood through adulthood. The content is abundant and varied, affording readers a unique perspective into the intricate lattice of the poet’s life experiences.

Engaging with Resembling a Moth is akin to exploring a deeply personal diary, curated with thoughtful intent and opened up for public perusal. The contemplative nature of the verses piques curiosity. It stimulates deep thought, making it clear that these poems serve dual purposes, not just as a vehicle for self-expression but also as a therapeutic tool for the poet, thereby revealing his inherent poetic prowess.

Several of the poems are complemented by evocative photographs, each narrating its own distinctive tale. From cherished pets to starkly desolate bars, from personal selfies to intimate shots of loved ones, these visuals offer readers additional insight into Queor’s world. While the links between certain photographs and their corresponding poems might be readily discernible, others maintain an air of mystery, adding an element of intrigue and surprise. For those seeking more understanding, Queor kindly includes explanations for some of the photos at the conclusion of the collection, shedding further light on his artistic process.

While Resembling a Moth might not deliver an easily discernible theme or a traditional narrative arc, it exudes power in its specificity, effectively spotlighting the author’s unique thoughts and lived experiences. Some poems may challenge readers with their abstractness or may not resonate universally, but the collection as a whole beckons readers into the depths of Queor’s poetic cosmos. Here, self-examination and personal evolution form a complex, intertwined constellation, making for a truly engaging literary experience.

The Tale of the Young Witch

Joseph Minart’s The Tale of the Young Witch weaves an enthralling narrative in a world of steam and shadow, where magic has been exiled by the invention of the Jewel of Celestria. Created centuries ago by three Noble Wizards, this artifact stands as a testament to their foresight in curbing the damages wrought by rampant magical powers.

Our tale takes root in the Kingdom of Daimitria, home to our youthful protagonist, Amelia Twigg, the humble blacksmith’s daughter. In the seemingly ordinary routine of sweeping her father’s workshop, Amelia finds herself amid the extraordinary when her broom begins to levitate. This peculiar incident, witnessed by her friend Jack Milton, shocks them both and triggers a visionary connection with the Jewel of Celestria. This extraordinary development, however, is merely the precursor to the storm about to ravage their lives.

When the Empire of Brath, the hostile adversaries of Daimitria, launches a devastating raid on her hometown, Amelia’s world comes crashing down around her. The tragic loss of her father in the ensuing chaos heralds the arrival of a wizard from the enigmatic group known as the Cursed Sorcerers, who expresses his Master’s desire to harness Amelia’s latent magic to dismantle the anti-magic curse.

Thanks to the timely intervention of the wizard Mr. Maxton, Amelia and Jack manage to escape, finding themselves pursued by the relentless agents of the dark order. In order to survive and preserve the world as they know it, Amelia must learn to master her burgeoning powers while evading the Master’s malevolent intentions to reintroduce unbridled magic to their world.

Minart’s narrative universe is a compelling blend of steampunk aesthetics and magical elements. This elegantly constructed reality is populated with an array of diverse characters and creatures, enhanced by a rich historical backdrop. One particularly notable aspect is Minart’s innovative reinterpretation of traditional fantasy elements such as elves, which distinguishes this book from standard fantasy fare. The story unfolds at a measured pace, offering a succession of unexpected twists that will keep readers on the edge of their seats.

Another commendable feature is the inclusion of an informative index. This handy tool serves as a valuable reference, aiding readers in navigating this intricately woven universe. The review process was certainly facilitated by this thoughtful addition.

The Tale of the Young Witch is an immersive journey into a world of intrigue, danger, and enchanting surprises. It doesn’t shy away from the gritty realities of life and death, often depicted in visceral detail. For those who relish the fusion of steam-powered innovation and fantastical elements, this is a must-read. Do not hesitate to venture into this remarkable narrative universe if you’re a fan of the unexpected, the thrilling, and the magical.

Life Is Full Of Obstacles

Joanne Telcide-Bryant Author Interview

I’m Just Dying to Be Queen Bee: A Story About Self-Determination follows a young worker bee determined to change the hierarchy and achieve her dreams. What was the inspiration for your story?

Life is full of obstacles. From a young age, we often feel the stress of competing for fulfilling things. Sometimes life teaches us that overcoming barriers to reach a goal takes hard work and self-determination. When does one realize when to apply the courage and hard work to go after something meaningful? Is it beneficial to create a plan to follow a roadmap to success? Nastassia, the worker bee, demonstrates that setting a plan and sticking to her mission does pay off. She realizes that believing in her abilities and self-determination will earn her the life she wants for herself. Her story will help you persevere to achieve your goals and create a life right for you.

Did you do a lot of research to maintain the accuracy of the subject?

I researched honeybee facts to ensure the quality of the story creation and to provide the contrast between bee facts and humorous fiction that unfolds in the story.

What were some educational aspects that were important for you to include in this children’s book?

I create exciting stories with growth-mindset themes focusing on Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) strategies. In my writing, I strive to help children develop positive SEL skills through cognitive development that will shape youngsters’ abilities to manage emotions and behaviors and set and achieve positive goals through her stories. Exposing children early on to vocabulary and literacy rules and building academic confidence and independence relating to shaping perspective and interpretation is vital. As a teacher who typically coaches young readers who struggle with literacy, exposing them to fun stories piques their interest. It provokes an intrinsic motivation that assists with making sense of words and word structuring. Additionally, children reading early in life can better form social-emotional skills through their imagination that develops as they read.

What is the next book you are working on, and when is that book due out?

I am working on a project on peer bullying and how the main character overcomes the naysayers. I plan to have this project completed by the end of this year.

My Inspiration Is The Story Itself

Blake Miller Author Interview

DELOS: The Moon’s Eye follows twin siblings and their friend who embark on a quest and face a deadly quest to locate the missing Lil of Lurker. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?

My inspiration is always the story itself. I love discovering how the main characters will get from point A to point B—all the way to point Z. I love going on the adventure with them. I chose non-identical twins (a black girl in Cynthia Summers and a white boy in Kaden Krossway) because it gave both the set up and the story itself a dynamic introduction while, at the same time, tying the main characters together by the enormously powerful bond of blood, of family. Next, I chose to begin the story on Earth because I wanted the readers to closely associate with Cynthia and Kaden, who in turn take the readers on the adventure in Narnia-like fashion. Though, whereas the characters in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe pass into their new world through a wardrobe, the characters in the DELOS series find their doorway through an oak tree.

How did you handle balancing the power and use of magic in the story?

Being new to the magikal world, Cynthia and Kaden are still learning about their own powers (called magikas). But thanks to their surprise fourth companion during the Quest of Six Waters (a person who knows all about magikas as well as the larger magikal world), they are also becoming more comfortable and confident while using their powers. But their powers are always extensions of themselves, secondary to their personalities; who they are at their cores will always be more important than what they can do magikally.

What character did you enjoy writing for? Was there one that was more challenging to write for?

I find it easiest to write for Alec. His personality most closely matches mine. I always find it most difficult to write for a newly introduced character. Because while I know the role they play in the story, discovering their personality is often tricky. It can take three quarters of the book before I have a clear grasp of it. This is part of the reason why rewrites are so crucial to my process. I will rewrite and rewrite until I get everything right.

Can you give your fans a hint about what will the next book in that series will be about and when will it be published?

The Epilogue of The Moon’s Eye sets up a thrilling next installment in the DELOS series, with two hitherto unknown groups being at the forefront: the Breeders and the Splicers. Without giving too much away, I’ll just say our three main characters (Cynthia, Kaden and Alec) will be forcibly divided and, for the first time ever, discover what it’s like when they can’t rely on one another anymore to overcome their obstacles.

DELOS: BOOK TWO
The magikal world gets even larger, the adventure gets even more thrilling, and the mysteries get even more intriguing in the second installment of this epic fantasy series, where climaxes and anticlimaxes once again abound, keeping you glued to the story.
THE QUEST OF SIX WATERS
When Cynthia Summers and Kaden Krossway learn that the Lil of Lurkur has gone missing, they join up with Alec Mulsiver and a surprising fourth com-panion to find her. This leads to another trip into Lurkur Woods, a haunting discovery about what has happened to the Lil, and then to Diluvium where they must undergo the Quest of Six Waters to claim what they need to save the Lil’s life: the Seventh Water. The problem is, no one has survived the Quest in over 6,000 years. . . .
The amazing story of Cynthia, Kaden and Alec continues.
