Long past the days when a lady is considered as a potential wife, a determined woman fired with feminist fervor and her sister set out to aid other women in desperate situations when no one else can or will help.  A historical mystery not in the traditional sense with non-traditional heroines set against the well-drawn backdrop of the Regency era world.

I’ve already enjoyed an earlier book by Alison Goodman so knew I was in for a colorful and exciting reading experience though this time there are no supernatural elements woven in.

Lady Augusta ‘Gus’ Colebrook has had it up to here with insipid High Society and its rules that put women at the mercy of unworthy men and she is not daunted by the darker underbelly of the glittering wealth.  She knows full well what getting involved means for her feminine reputation, but she has a heart and fire in her that can’t turn her eyes from others’ plights.  Gus decides to enlist her grieving twin sister and go to the rescue.

Along the way, they have an encounter with a highwayman that has a bizarre twist to the story in that he turns out to be a surprising new ally and a man with a criminal past.  They operated in secret and I enjoyed pursuing the various types of mysteries they worked on from the first case of abuse to a horrid mental institution

I ended up having to make some mental adjustments when I read this one. First, I had it in my head that it would be lighter- more cozy and bantering- than it was.  Once I realized that this would deal with social ills and mysteries that were darker like human trafficking, abuse, and cruel mental asylums, I was fine with what I got.  And, secondly, this is actually a story broken into three parts based on three different cases the sisters, Gus and Julia, and Lord Evan are working on with the aid of their loyal serving staff and a Bow Street Runner.  It is also not an end all, but the spring board for further books in a series- at least I hope that’s why the end was somewhat abrupt.

It was frustrating for Gus that men wouldn’t heed her and Oys, I wanted to smack her spiteful brother for her the way he acted toward her.  Gus and Julia might be considered past it by society, but they were smart and used their spinsterhood to advantage.  They also had Twin Power- or at least a fun and helpful way of silently communicating that aided them in their work. The mysteries were great, but I loved that there was a romance brewing for Gus, too.  Lord Evan was a fab tarnished hero who wasn’t the criminal that all of society thought him, but he was on a mission about all that and helping the sisters, too.

All in all, this was a good start to the series and I want more Gus, Lord Evan and their team hot on the trail of social injustice and misery in their Regency times.  Historical mystery fans who like it a bit grittier and darker with social injustice elements and bold characters should give this a go.

A Dance Between Light and Darkness follows the combined worlds of vampires and werewolves who must unite against a sinister evil. What was the initial idea behind this story, and how did that transform as you were writing the novel?

A Dance Between Light and Darkness takes place a period of time after the events unfolded in the predecessor The Darkest Side of the Moon. Once enemies, I wanted to explore how vampires and werewolves could unite when setting aside differences which was necessary when a new sinister threat emerged. There was a driving force that united them. They didn’t always see eye to eye, but processing and asking the right questions revealed truth along the way and the realization they were not always in control of certain situations. There wasn’t a concrete idea in the beginning. I allowed the characters to take the lead, knowing what I had in mind for the end.

Were you able to achieve everything you wanted with the characters in the novel?

Yes, plus so much more with contrast between light and darkness.

What draws you to the world of vampires and werewolves and makes it ripe for you to write such a great fantasy story in it?

First, I’m honored that you consider it a “great fantasy story.” My interest to the vampire and werewolf world stemmed from some of the well-known books, shows, and movies like Twilight, The Vampire Diaries, and Underworld series. I took it even further, making it my own and blending in difficult real life subject matters as well.

What is the next book that you are working on and when can your fans expect it to be out?

I’m currently working on publishing the third book, All I See Are Dark Clouds and a novella tie-in, The Neighbors. They both should arrive sometime in summer 2023.

Struggle Bus: The Van. The Myth. The Legend is more than just a memoir; it is a source of amusement, reflection, and a testament to having faith. How did your Craigslist ad for a van manifest into this inspirational book?

I learned long ago that one of the best “ice breaker” questions to get a group of people to start talking/interacting is this: “Tell me the story of one of your scars.”

Scars are painful in the moment but often provide a lifetime of stories—sometimes painful, sometimes hilarious, sometimes both, always memorable. It dawned on me that our viral Craigslist ad was essentially a long list of our van’s scars. I thought it would be fun to tell all the fun stories (in gory detail) of our van’s many scars—as much to preserve the stories for our family as to give others something to laugh about. I think my ridiculous little book did just that.

I appreciated the candid nature with which you told your story. What was the hardest thing for you to write about?

The stories of our kids’ medical issues were easily the hardest things to write about. Even though there’s a dose of humor in many of the stories, reliving the moments brings back sort of an echo of the extreme parental fear, panic, and dread each of those moments created. I physically winced retelling many of the stories. That said, I think it was oddly therapeutic to write about all our moments—good and bad. I’d recommend it to any parent.

What is one piece of advice you wish someone had given you when you were younger?

I can’t remember where I heard this quote (and I’m probably butchering it…sorry), but there’s some truth in it:

“In your twenties, you’re constantly worried about what everyone else is thinking about you.

In your forties, you stop caring what others are thinking about you.

In your sixties, you realize that no one was thinking about you the whole time.”

Basically, I wish I would have spent less time caring so deeply what other people think. Of course, young Josh Wood probably wouldn’t have listened had anyone given him the advice to stop caring so much about what other people are thinking. I will never be smarter than I was at 20-years-old. Oh, to be young and stupid.

What is one thing you hope readers take away from your story?

First and foremost, I hope readers take away the peace, hope, joy, and genuine fun that faith in Jesus infused into the messes of my life. Additionally, I hope parents both A) embrace some new ways to engage with their kids…and engage their families as a whole with the world around them; and, B) feel some grace and solidarity for not being the perfect parent. Life is too short and too hard to hold yourself to an impossible standard. Embrace the messes of life (both self-inflicted messes and those out of your control), stumble forward, and try to laugh along the way.

Marie Bostwick pulled me into the story of Esme Cahill, who finds herself divorced, loses her beloved grandmother, and her job. Her dreams of a garden apartment and writing her own novel are dashed. She soon finds herself defeated and heads back to her grandparent’s lakeside resort to regroup for the summer.

Esme hasn’t been back since her estranged mother showed up years ago and is shocked to see the place rundown and her grandfather having issues. Esme plans to stay until summer’s end. A package from her late grandmother sets her on a journey to discover more about her and the quilts she made. I loved this thread with its touches of magical realism and history.

I loved Esme and enjoyed the growth we witness in her from restoring the resort to dealings with a curmudgeon writer. I laughed, cheered, cried, and felt as if I were there.

The lakeside resort is delightful and the new cook whips up delectable dishes and cakes. All the food talk had me wanting to pack my bags and visit for a week.

You’ll cheer Esme on as she tries to save the resort, reunite with an old friend and enjoy the possibilities of a new romance. This story has it all, from mending relationships to restoring your passion.

Esme Cahill Fails Spectacularly is the PERFECT beach read this summer. Fans of family, healing and finding yourself will love Esme.

Brenda Stanley’s The Still Small Voice is a captivating tale that intertwines family dynamics, deeply buried secrets, and an undeniable sense of homecoming.
