Being Madame Ariadne, Psychic Dream Consultant, wasn’t Prudence Ryland’s ideal gig, but it paid well which was reason enough to do the work—until she realizes that her latest client intends to kill her. But Prudence, a master at reinvention, finds a new job and home as far away as possible and is finally able to relax—which turns out to be a big mistake. Letting her guard down means being kidnapped and drugged and waking up in a bloodstained wedding dress in the honeymoon suite next to a dead man. With the press outside the hotel, waiting with their cameras and police sirens in the distance, it’s obvious she’s being framed for the man’s murder. Prudence knows who is responsible, but will anyone believe her?

It doesn’t seem likely that rumored crime boss Luther Pell or his associate, Jack Wingate, believe her seemingly outrageous claims of being a target of a ruthless vendetta. In fact, Prudence is convinced that the mysterious Mr. Wingate believes her to be a fraud at best, and at worst: a murderer. And Jack Wingate does seem to be someone intimately familiar with violence, if going by his scarred face and grim expression. So no one is more shocked than Prudence when Jack says he’ll help her. Of course, his ideas for helping her involve using her as the bait for a killer, but Prudence feels oddly safe with Jack protecting her. But who will protect Prudence from her growing fascination with this enigma of a man?

While each novel in the Burning Cove series features one couple and a suspenseful storyline, I recommend reading the series in the order of its release. Characters, locations and references will all be enhanced by doing so.

The tale begins when we meet Prudence Ryland, a Psychic Dream Consultant known to the world as Madame Ariadne. When she realizes her current client intends to kill her, she picks up roots and reinvents herself. Everything goes swimmingly until she wakes up in a hotel room next to a dead man. She flees and reaches out to Luther Pell for help. That assistance comes in the form of Jack Wingate.

From the moment Prudence and Jack met, I loved the back-and-forth barbs and sizzling chemistry. She believes in the paranormal and Jack is grounded in facts. It’s decided she will renew her role as Madame Ariadne to draw whomever is trying to frame Prudence. The tale that unfolds was suspenseful with a clever whodunit and a delicious side of romance.

I am enchanted by Burning Cove and the characters Quick brings to life. Followers of the Arcane Society series will savor references to the series. Prudence is quite intelligent, just like Jack, whose intuition and dreams appear to be in the same realm as Prudence’s gifts. His narrative and ambitions were extraordinary, and seeing these two collaborate and become closer was a pleasure.

The romance felt like a slow-burn as respect came first despite the chemistry. I rooted for them and loved the behinds the scenes matchmaking from other characters.

I devoured their story in two sittings and regret nothing. Except for the fact that I’ll have to wait for the next story in the Burning Cove series.

Tapson stiffened violently as if he had touched a live electrical wire.

In a sense, that was exactly what had happened.

Tapson stared at her in disbelief and mounting horror. He began to tremble. The tremors became spasms. The knife fell to the carpet, landing with a soft plop.

“No,” he said. “You can’t do this to me.”

His eyes rolled back in his head. His right hand went limp. He no longer had a death grip on the rim of the bowl—he was incapable of gripping anything. He collapsed on the floor and lay still.

She took a shaky breath and yanked her hand off the crystal. The pain of the psychic burn wasn’t from a physical injury—her fingertips had not actually been singed—but her nerves were severely rattled. She could not afford to succumb to an anxiety attack, not now. She needed to stay focused on survival, because it was obvious her entire world had just been turned upside down.

“Damn you, Tapson,” she whispered to the unconscious man. “I hope you are trapped in a nightmare. I hope you are locked in it for the rest of your life.”

She had to think. She had to concentrate on the next move.

She took a step and then stopped and put a hand on the table to keep from losing her balance. When she had her nerves under control, she made her way around the table. Crouching beside Tapson, she groped for and found a faint, erratic pulse. He was alive, but she was sure he would never be the same.

There was no way to calculate how much damage she had done to his nerves and his senses. The technique of channeling energy through crystal with enough force to destabilize the source of a person’s dreams was highly unpredictable. It was hardly the sort of skill one could easily practice and refine, at least not in an ethical way.

The talent for doing what she had just done was rare, even in a family with a long history of psychics who could read dreams. But the few accounts left by her ancestors who had possessed the ability had been clear on one point—disrupting an individual’s dream energy was guaranteed to cause considerable damage.

First things first. Her own survival was at stake. She had to get rid of Tapson. She could not let him continue to lie there on the floor of her reading room. What if he woke up and was still capable of killing her? What if he never woke up at all?

She briefly considered trying to hide the unconscious man. Even if she could manage the process—doubtful, because Tapson was large and powerfully built—there was no practical way to haul him any significant distance in the busy city.

There was really only one solution to her problem. She would call an ambulance and explain that Tapson had suffered a stroke during a reading. If or when he woke up, there was a good chance he would not remember exactly what had happened. Even if he did remember what she had done to him, he would have a hard time convincing the police she had tried to murder him with psychic energy.

For her part, she had no way to prove that he had tried to murder her, let alone that he had killed others.

Regardless of what happened to Tapson, her reputation would be destroyed if the press got hold of the story. The rumors alone would ruin her. Clients would certainly not be eager to book appointments with a psychic known to have had a client collapse during a reading. That sort of thing did not make for successful marketing.

She did not believe in omens and portents, but this situation was about as close as one could get to a sign from the universe informing her that it was time to move on.

The Freeze

In the year 2064, humanity is reeling from the devastating effects of a deadly virus that has ravaged the global population. Despite valiant efforts by scientists to develop vaccines, the virus continues to take its toll, and the government is forced to take drastic action. With nearly a third of London’s citizens dead, the government divides the city into four zones and asserts that a naturally occurring temporal anomaly causes certain areas to freeze at specific intervals.

In this world of chaos and uncertainty, James is a young man trying to make sense of the new reality. His life changes when he meets Sasha, a passionate advocate for an organization called “The Thaw,” which seeks to free citizens and allow them to leave the confines of the city walls. Convinced that the government is behind the temporal freezes, James joins Sasha and the organization in their mission to overthrow the system. But can a group of teenagers really take on the might of the government and emerge victorious?

R. D. Steven’s fast-paced writing style immediately drew me into the story. Unlike many young adult dystopian novels that focus on the scenery, the author skillfully delves into James’ traumatized mind, creating a unique and emotionally engaging experience. The description of James’ feelings is relatable and realistic, making his character all the more compelling. As the story progresses, the latter half of the book focuses on James’ mental growth as he transforms from a broken and worn-down character to a stronger, more resilient person. Witnessing this transformation was deeply satisfying, and it gave me hope for the future of the world in the story. The novel’s conclusion is hopeful, leaving the reader with a sense of closure and the belief that change is possible. This book is a great read, with a storyline that feels eerily possible in our current global situation. It made me reflect on the lengths to which governments might go to contain a pandemic and the importance of individual agency in shaping the future.

The Freeze is an excellent young adult dystopian novel that expertly blends action, suspense, and emotional depth. The story’s plausibility and relevance to contemporary issues regarding disease control and government intervention serve as a warning about the potential consequences of government overreach. In short, this is a fantastic novel that will leave readers thoroughly entranced.

The Adventures of the Soul Sistas: or How the Sisters Changed the World

The Adventures of the Soul Sistas: or How the Sisters Changed the World, is a wonderfully written story that teaches children about the beauty of adoption and multicultural families. In this heartwarming children’s book, two people, Alexandra and Nathan Spirit, find themselves living on a farm in the country, way out of their comfort zone. They want to have a family but are unable, and through some extraordinary circumstances, they wind up with the chance to adopt not one but two little girls. So in this small rural town, this unique family with two Black parents, one white child, and one Black child face constant looks and were not included in many events. How will the sisters handle heading off to school when it is time?

Author Newton Vanriel has written a fantastic book about adoption and the challenges that raising a multicultural family can face. In addition, while not biologically twins, the girls are so close in age that they act like twins. This story covers many topics parents sometimes find hard to explain to young children. This book is written in a way that is perfect for reading together and opening up discussions. It is broken up so that it is easy to stop and talk about the different situations that come up. I love the little poems that are included as well. They are like a summary and motivational lesson, all in a couple of lines summarizing the topic on the page before it. The artwork by Monique Ra Brent is bright and colorful; it will appeal to children and bring a smile to those reading this captivating story.

The Adventures of the Soul Sistas: or How the Sisters Changed the World, is an inspiring story for children struggling with fitting in, that are adopted, or who come from mixed families. The world is full of exciting and different people, and family comprises the people you love and support you. Sisters do not have to look alike, and diversity is a beautiful thing.

Wolf Harvest

J.S. Michael’s literary masterpiece, Wolf Harvest, is a mesmerizing and distinctive wildlife-adventure tale that takes place in the outer reaches of Pittsburgh and northern Canada. The story revolves around a pack of canines and their daily routines, which are keenly observed by two inquisitive college students, Amy and Sam. Although they receive guidance and mentorship from their professor, Amy and Sam continue to follow the pack in their quest to comprehend their ways and establish a bond with Coda, a coyote-wolf hybrid and the central character in the novel.

The author expertly portrays Coda’s point of view, offering a fresh and enlightening perspective on the relationship between humans and animals. The author’s depiction of the animal characters is so realistic that readers can’t help but be drawn into their world. The characters, including Coda, are three-dimensional and well-developed, making it easy for readers to become emotionally invested in their lives and struggles. You can sense and sympathize with Coda’s ever-changing urge to engage with humans while also keeping a distance from them. The narrative is brimming with excitement, humor, and tension, captivating readers until the very end. The author’s engaging writing style is ingenious and lucid, and the characters are skillfully crafted, with the main character being an animal, adding a unique touch to the plot.

Wolf Harvest is a riveting read that will appeal to animal enthusiasts and fans of fantasy-fiction novels. The intriguing characters and unforeseen plot twists make it an excellent choice for readers who enjoy a thrilling adventure. I highly recommend this book, and it is a must-read for anyone seeking an unforgettable reading experience.

Step Out Of Your Comfort Zone

Author Interview
Juliet Young Author Interview

An Accidental Parisian is a memoir chronicling your journey from Toronto to navigating the challenges of being a French national and citizen of three countries while unraveling the forces and circumstances that brought you to where you are today. Why was this an important memoir for you to write?

In order to fully understand how and why I got here, I needed to reach back and trace the trajectory of my life from a happy child, rebellious teenager, and questing adult to the European citizen and resident of France that I am today. I needed to see how circumstances and family events dictated my choice to settle permanently in Europe (and not in my homeland of Canada). In this respect, I wrote the memoir for myself.

The second reason that motivated me to write the book was the other Parisian memoirs I had read, written by British, American, Canadian, and Australian women like me. While very good and hugely entertaining, I concluded that my personal story was just as interesting as theirs … even more so!

I appreciated the candid nature with which you told your story. What was the hardest thing for you to write about?

The death of my parents and the void it has left in my life. I miss their presence and integrity; their benevolence and emotional support. But writing about my mother and father brought them back to life (and evoked happier times), so it wasn’t entirely painful.

What is one thing about Paris that you feel is little-known or underrated?

The diversity and charm of the different neighborhoods and arrondissements of the city. Throw away your tourist map and get lost; there are hidden gems to discover when one dares to stray off the beaten track. Leafy parks, gardens, and squares; small museums; churches, canals, and quiet residential boulevards. Admire the elegant Haussmann architecture and pop into boutiques, bistros, and boulangeries frequented by the locals. Currently, my two favorite arrondissements for wandering are the 12th and the 14th.

What do you hope is one thing readers take away from your story?

To be adventurous. To have faith in the universe. To step out of your comfort zone and open yourself up to new experiences; hopefully, you’ll be rewarded.

Also, to be your own best friend. Life is full of surprises, good and bad, and unexpected detours. You might lose friends and family along the way … people will betray you … and you’ll have only yourself to fall back on. So, self-reliance. You need to be there … for you. You need to be your own cheerleader and support system.

Carefree, confident and curious about the world around her, Juliet takes leave from her comfortable life back home and embarks on a journey to Paris. Her goals are to perfect her French, find a job and have exhilarating adventures in Europe for a year or two.

Chronicling her story from an idyllic childhood in a Toronto suburb to France where she lives and works today, we follow Juliet—first to Montpellier to study French at Paul Valéry University only to end up in the role of French housewife at the age of 24—and onwards to Paris where she discovers the city and its residents, hunts for a job and an apartment, works in an advertising agency and then at Reuters, all while rollicking adventures—romantic and otherwise—are thrust upon her.

A feminist, Juliet finds France to be a deeply patriarchal and sexist society, and the women acquiescent.

At the book’s core are Juliet’s loving and successful parents. She plans to return home and to them, and settle permanently. But when her father suddenly dies, and her mother six years later, her world comes crashing down.

The book is called An Accidental Parisian because it was never the author’s intention to live abroad for so long. In an endeavor to understand how this happened, she must cast back to her beginnings—and her parents’ beginnings—and piece together the forces, choices and circumstances that brought her to where she is today: a French national and citizen of three countries, still living and working in Paris.

Make Sure Your Final Years Are What You Want

Jim van de Erve Author Interview

A Lie Called the Present follows a woman suffering with Dementia who tries to keep her family together despite their efforts to the contrary. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?

The story of A Lie Called the Present transpired in much the same setting and with a similar plot line to what occurred in my family. My mother was removed from our family home of 47 years because of her oncoming dementia and family politics. My father conspired with others in the family in what was a progression of very difficult decisions that taught me many lessons about life and informed my writing.

What was your inspiration for the characters and their relationship?

The inspiration for the characters in the play comes from family members and friends who live under the pall of pain, illness, and distress that aging brings, often with little hope of improvement or recovery. The emotional toll that these people bear helped me appreciate the courage and drama that they use to fight off their physical and mental demons. Dealing with my aging parents brought a whole new dynamic to sibling interaction, often reverting to old childhood power struggles and hurts that were acted out but in a more adult way. I didn’t model the sibling relationships just on my own family but also on what I have witnessed among my friends and their siblings as well.

What were some themes that were important for you to explore in this book?

The family is a powerful institution that you dismiss at your own peril. The story drives home the importance of long-range planning in making life decisions to make sure your final years are what you want, and not what your children think they should be. Shakespearean verse and speeches add dramatically to the depth of a literary work.

What is the next book that you are working on and when will it be available?

I have a collection of sonnets in the works. It will be quite a while before they are ready.

In this play in verse, an elderly woman resists her husband’s yearning for freedom, as their children fight for power and control with forces that could tear the family apart.

The mother clings to her home, staving off dementia. Her children desperately hide their pasts and deny their futures.

In A Lie Called the Present, betrayal lurks in the depths of the family.
