Yearning to Breathe Free

On Thursday, July 6, 1989, I sat in bright summer sunshine on the veranda of the old vicarage in Pankow, a suburb of East Berlin, talking to Joachim, the twenty-one-year-old son of my dearest East German friends, Werner and Annegret Krätschell. The little boy I remembered had grown into a tall, strong, and angry young […]

A handsome bald guy with dark features and a closely cropped beard appears in close-up against a black background. With genial authority and indefinite foreign inflection he declares: Art’s central myth is the myth of the individual genius. Each year new art stars are found to satisfy the appetite, the psychological and economical needs of […]

The Perpetual Provocateur

“Whatever is to become of poor Piranesi,” mused Thomas De Quincey in his 1821 Confessions of an English Opium-Eater. He wasn’t worried about the real Piranesi, long dead by then; he was considering the plight of an etched figure he understood to be Piranesi in one of the artist’s Carceri d’invenzione (Imaginary Prisons). “Creeping along […]

Seeing Baya Anew

In November 1947 a fifteen-year-old prodigy from colonial Algeria named Baya, described variously as Kabyle, Berber, Muslim, and Arab, exhibited her gouaches and clay sculptures at the Parisian gallery of the art dealer Aimé Maeght. Yves Chataigneau, the French governor of Algeria, and Si Kaddour Benghabrit, the rector of the Paris Mosque, were the sponsors […]

This is the sixth audiobook in the Max Abaddon series. While we still have arc series questions yet to be answered, each book brings fresh problems. Filled with snark, humor, and plenty of action, I love Max and his motley crew of companions.

Apparently, someone wants Max dead, and vampires are ready to make that happen. A foulmouthed unicorn gives Max an unpleasant experience. It is wrong that I laughed and cringed all at the same time?

The world Leslie has created with different plains, travel gates, and supernatural creatures alongside gods means the stories are never boring. Max finds his face plastered all over social media and he needs to find out who is behind this sooner rather than later. He’s being investigated, and the team goes into hiding.

Secrets are revealed, and questions will be asked. The action scenes were epic and kept me listening. The council and marshalls will be busy after this show…lol

The ending was brutal. I mean brutal. So many questions. I need answers. I got emotional and cannot find any information on the next book/audiobook. Hopefully, the author doesn’t leave me hanging. Ok, so it’s only been five months since this released… maybe I am overreacting, but seriously I need more of these characters.

Luke Daniels brought these characters to life. I am always amazed by the different voices he creates and how perfectly they enhance the characters’ personalities. I highly recommend listening.

Sherlock Holmes: A Question of Time

Glenn Searfoss’s novel, Sherlock Holmes: A Question of Time, presents a captivating and innovative interpretation of the renowned character of Sherlock Holmes. The plot is an enthralling mystery that commences with Dr. John Watson receiving a desperate plea for assistance from a street urchin named Bobby. Upon arriving at 221b Baker Street, Watson discovers a traumatized maid and a seemingly unresponsive Sherlock, who claims to be in a state of profound shock. In an attempt to revive his colleague, Watson retraces Sherlock’s steps, which leads to discovering a vast, unblemished circle in a burnt-down warehouse. As Sherlock awakens from his state of shock, he recounts a fantastical tale involving a time traveler who triggered the conflagration and the enigmatic circle.

The classic sleuth, Sherlock Holmes, is legendary and a favorite among mystery aficionados. Recently, there has been a trend in the literary world where authors have reimagined these timeless characters. A fresh and innovative approach to the most famous detective in history is always welcome, and Searfoss delivers precisely that with this new interpretation. I found the change in Sherlock Holmes’s character, particularly when he slips into a catatonic state for days on end, living in his filth, to be a refreshing alteration. The author’s use of old-fashioned English-style writing was a delightful surprise and felt authentic. Furthermore, the novel presents a compelling and unique storyline that cleverly merges the fantasy and science fiction elements of H.G. Wells’s works with the logical reasoning that characterizes the Sherlock Holmes franchise. Searfoss has deftly crafted an original and captivating narrative that builds upon both writers’ works, resulting in an intriguing and exceptional read.

Overall, Sherlock Holmes: A Question of Time is an exciting and refreshing take on the iconic character of Sherlock Holmes. Searfoss skillfully weaves together elements of different genres to produce a new and original story that will enthrall and captivate readers.

Once upon a Wonderland

Embark on a riveting adventure in the world of Wonderland with Alice as she sets out on a quest to reunite with her true love, Jack. Will Alice overcome the challenges that come her way and unravel the secrets of Wonderland, or will she be met with a new set of obstacles? While navigating through her troubles, Alice remains true to herself and stays grounded, all while finding herself once again in the mystical realm of Wonderland after being unconsciously transported back by an overwhelming wave during a swim day.

In his interpretation of Alice, Dj Stoneham portrays a strong and determined protagonist, challenging traditional narratives and prompting readers to rethink their perceptions of the modern woman. By integrating classic folklore with contemporary themes, the author ingeniously merges the old and the new in this narrative. Alice, in particular, defies societal expectations and chooses to embark on a journey of self-discovery and happiness rather than conforming to domestic ideals. Moreover, the novel features an array of captivating characters and fantastical creatures, including mermaids and exotic sea creatures, that Alice converses with. Dj Stoneham masterfully weaves together various elements of fantasy and adventure, breathing new life into the classic tale of Alice.

Having thoroughly enjoyed reading Once Upon A Wonderland, I wholeheartedly recommend this book for its creativity, modernity, and enchanting storytelling. This novel is a must-read for young adults who seek to challenge traditional norms and indulge in a mesmerizing tale filled with fascinating characters and narratives. Dj Stoneham’s fresh take on Alice’s world is sure to ignite the imagination and leave readers spellbound.

All the Furs and Feathers

All the Furs and Feathers, the inaugural novel in the Cat Tales Series by the talented author Eileen O’Finlan, is a captivating animal fiction that will steal your heart. The story revolves around the lives of Smokerina and Autumn Amelia, two feline sisters who are coping with the loss of their parents and living together in a cozy cottage. Autumn, renowned for her culinary skills, is regarded as the finest baker in the world, while Smokey, a talented architect, works at Fluffington ArCATecture.

When Smokey lands the project of her career, constructing the first cat park, Abigail Fluffington promises to make her a partner if the project succeeds. Simultaneously, Smokey has the opportunity to work on a project that has the potential to revolutionize animal relations forever. Throughout the story, readers will witness the heartwarming moments shared by family, friends, and strangers with similar interests, as well as the reconciliation between age-old foes, such as cats and rodents.

The author employs personification throughout the book to drive the plot forward, imbuing animals with human-like characteristics while still preserving their species-specific traits. Many of the animals are dressed like humans; some even work and drive, have access to education and recreation and dine on human food. Despite this, some cats question their feline nature, while others suffer from mental health issues. Additionally, the author’s witty use of cat puns adds a charming touch while keeping cats at the forefront of the narrative.

In my opinion, All the Furs and Feathers is a true masterpiece. The story’s concept is symbolic, and the characters are utterly lovable. The narrative is also an allegory for social divide, activism, and the pursuit of equality, as some animals strive to coexist peacefully with one another. This is an ideal book for cat and animal lovers of all ages. I’m eagerly anticipating the sequel, and I highly recommend this book to anyone seeking a heartwarming read.

Where Liberty Lies by Nathaniel M. Wrey is a captivating continuation of the journey of Aminatra, Finbarl, Karlmon, and their companion Bokanda. Departing from the mountains, the group discovers a lush environment, replete with new life forms but also fraught with dangerous encounters with wild animals and ferrals. Nonetheless, this environment brings hope to their quest to find Madelaton. However, as their journey progresses, the group expands with new and unexpected members before they are abruptly torn apart, leaving them to confront the trials of survival alone. Will they reunite or succumb to the challenges in their path?

Wrey’s masterful storytelling in Where Liberty Lies delivers a gripping narrative filled with a thrilling blend of action and adventure. The plot brims with an abundance of unexpected twists and turns, provoking a sense of anxiety and excitement that sustains throughout the book. The novel’s midpoint marks a significant shift in the plot, adding to the intrigue and keeping readers engaged until the end. The characters in Where Liberty Lies are equally compelling. Aminatra, the strong and caring mother of Karlmon, is a standout character whose resilience and fortitude are thoroughly explored in the story. Finbarl, Aminatra’s husband, exemplifies loyalty and protection, treating Karlmon as his own child and consistently placing the family’s welfare first. The supporting characters are equally noteworthy, and although Bokanda’s role was limited, it was essential, and he served his purpose well. Maddy, another character in the novel, is unforgettable, and readers will appreciate her unique qualities.

Overall, Where Liberty Lies delivers a seamless plot that expertly progresses. The story’s twists and turns are perfectly executed, and the characters are well-rounded and memorable. Nathaniel M. Wrey’s writing style engages the reader and keeps them invested in the story, leaving a lasting impression long after turning the last page. Fans of adventure, fantasy, and action will undoubtedly appreciate this second installment in the trilogy and anticipate the third book’s release.
