Making a Constitutional Convention Safe for Democracy

For over two decades, conservatives in the United States have been trying to trigger a provision of the Constitution that has never been used—a clause that gives states the power to demand that Congress “call a Convention for proposing amendments” to the Constitution itself. The movement is supported by a wide range of leaders and […]

New York Times-bestselling October Daye series • Hugo Award-winning author Seanan McGuire • “Top of my urban-paranormal series list!” —Felicia Day

October “Toby” Daye is a changeling, the daughter of Amandine of the fae and a mortal man. Like her mother, she is gifted in blood magic, able to read what has happened to a person through a mere taste of blood. Toby is the only changeling who has earned knighthood, and she re-earns that position every day, undertaking assignments for her liege, Sylvester, the Duke of the Shadowed Hills.

Now Sylvester has asked her to go to the County of Tamed Lightning—otherwise known as Fremont, CA—to make sure that all is well with his niece, Countess January O’Leary, whom he has not been able to contact. It seems like a simple enough assignment—but when dealing with the realm of Faerie nothing is ever as simple as it seems.

Toby soon discovers that someone has begun murdering people close to January, whose domain is a buffer between Sylvester’s realm and a scheming rival duchy. If Toby can’t find the killer soon, she may well become the next victim.

The book opens with Toby leaving a bar after an evening with friends. She is a little tipsy and walking home to her digs in the human world. I loved the scene with Tybalt, the King of Cats as he helps her get home.

Toby is a changeling, the daughter of Amandine of the fae and a mortal man. She is the only one of her kind to earn a knighthood and while she lives in the human world and has a private investigator license; she takes assignments from her liege, Sylvester, the Duke of the Shadowed Hills. He has lost contact with his niece, the Countess January O’Leary. Politics will not allow him to go personally, so he sends Toby and Quentin her teenage sidekick/ knight apprentice.

When Toby arrives at Tamed Lightning, she discovers things are definitely wrong. Several dead bodies are stored in the basement and January claims she cannot reach her uncle. Things are weird at the palace from the victims whose blood is void of emotions to the tech company January runs. Her AI daughter April is actually a dryad and creepy. It’s time to get your geek on.

The mystery felt like a weekend on an isolated island where victims keep piling up and the list of suspects is limited to those on the grounds. Something is very wrong, and the twists kept Toby guessing.

I loved the mystery aspect as the second half became more suspenseful and the danger increased. I loved the night-haunts and other fae creatures we encountered. McGuire weaved a tale that kept me engaged and left me eager for more time with Toby.

Mary Robinette Kowal narrates and does a wonderful job of capturing Toby’s personality and giving voice to this cast of characters.

Fans of urban fantasy, paranormal mysteries, the Fae and private investigations will get a kick out of A Local Habitation and the October Daye series. I recommend listening.

About Seanan McGuire

Seanan McGuire

Seanan McGuire is a native Californian, which has resulted in her being exceedingly laid-back about venomous wildlife, and terrified of weather. When not writing urban fantasy (as herself) and science fiction thrillers (as Mira Grant), she likes to watch way too many horror movies, wander around in swamps, record albums of original music, and harass her cats. Seanan is the author of the October Daye, InCryptid, and Indexing series of urban fantasies; the Newsflesh trilogy; the Parasitology duology; and the “Velveteen vs.” superhero shorts. Her cats, Lilly, Alice, and Thomas, are plotting world domination even as we speak, but are easily distracted by feathers on sticks, so mankind is probably safe. For now.

The Burden of Memory

Rick Christman’s The Burden of Memory is a captivating crime thriller that weaves suspense and mystery with a deeply introspective exploration of the human soul and its emotional complexities. The novel centers around Robert Russell, a man who has endured a tumultuous life filled with heartbreak and invisible scars. Following his return from the war in 1971, he pursued an education with the hope of becoming an imaginative writer and English professor. Despite his efforts to leave his war-time experiences in the past, Robert struggles to form deep and meaningful connections with others, eventually leading him down a path of reclusion. After retiring, he seeks solace in Beaufort, South Carolina, where he intends to focus on writing a novel. However, he soon finds himself entangled in unexpected danger, with murder, drugs, and crime groups lurking around every corner.

The narration style employed in this book is a unique and compelling approach, allowing readers to experience both the fictional story surrounding Robert and the story that he is writing. Robert’s many strange and mysterious experiences begin to influence his writing, creating a dynamic interplay between fiction and reality that seamlessly blends together. The story mainly follows Robert’s perspective as he navigates the complexities of his new life. Despite his desire for a peaceful retirement, he finds himself embroiled in a series of events that force him to question his own morality and motivations. As he witnesses a ruthless murder, Robert grapples with the decision of whether to remain aloof or to intervene. Ultimately, his need to protect those he loves and his unwavering moral compass led him to the forefront of the conflict, unraveling the mystery and danger that enveloped him. Throughout the novel, Robert’s growth as a character is evident as he learns to love again and fight for those meaningful connections that he has found.

The Burden of Memory is a riveting tale that seamlessly blends suspense and mystery with an exploration of love and human relationships, making it an exceptional read.

A Lesson in Woo-Woo and Murder

In A Lesson in Woo-Woo and Murder, author David Unger introduces us to David, an unconventional therapist who accompanies his clients on offbeat adventures. Invited by Eve and Sheridan to attend The Whole Life Expo—a diverse gathering of vendors specializing in the new age, natural health, metaphysical, and even extraterrestrial subjects. While not David’s usual interests, he finds himself being drawn into this world and starting to believe. Soon, however, he finds himself embroiled in a mysterious death that may not be an accident.

Unger’s writing style is both witty and direct, immediately drawing the reader into the world of the quirky protagonist, David. By telling the story from David’s perspective, the reader gains an intimate understanding of his thoughts and outlook on events. Unger masterfully sets up the murder mystery at the New Age convention and builds tension throughout the narrative, keeping readers on their toes with unexpected twists. Unger adds some romance in with a psychic foretelling that romance is in his future, though David is skeptical at best when receiving this news.

The novel’s exploration of New Age topics adds a refreshing and engaging dimension to the story, which many readers may find relatable and intriguing. In addition, the diverse cast of characters, such as aura-reading Eve and fortune-telling Madame Vadama, further contribute to the story’s mystique. Initially skeptical of their abilities, David begins to question the reality of their supernatural talents, and readers are drawn deeper into the story’s enigmatic atmosphere.

A Lesson in Woo-Woo and Murder is a distinctive and entertaining amateur sleuths mystery. This engaging novel is highly recommended for those seeking a satisfying and open-minded literary experience.

Nate rescues her from supernatural attackers and Alissia soon discovers that he is not just the man in her dreams, but a real person, revealing a world she never knew existed. Love between Alissia and Nate is forbidden, but they just can’t shake the feeling that they are destined to be together. Alissia and Nate must venture out into the supernatural world of vampires, fae, demons, and witches to find a future together.

The Nephilim’s Fate by Eliza Hampstead is a gripping erotic, fantasy romance novel that will have you glued to the pages as we explore the forbidden love between Alissia and Nate. The author seamlessly weaves Alissia and Nate’s struggle to find a way to be together while, in the world of magic, supernatural forces collide in a battle of power and destiny.

Dancing Skies & City Lights

Dancing Skies & City Lights by Sheleila D’Paiva is an immersive work of fiction that takes readers on a journey of self-discovery, hope, and life transformation through adventure. The novel follows Katelyn, who leaves her seemingly perfect life and sets out on a quest to rediscover herself. However, as she travels the world, crafting her present moment by moment, her past comes back to haunt her. Will she realize she belongs to this world, or will her fantasy come crashing down?

This multifaceted travelogue is a beacon of hope for all those with a wanderlust spirit. While the travel adventures are undoubtedly a highlight, they serve as a means to an end – a way for Katelyn to confront her fears and insecurities and ultimately find a more profound sense of purpose and meaning in life. The author’s writing style is descriptive and engaging, with short sentences and dialogue tags that add a touch of realism without sacrificing coherence. She skillfully conveys Katelyn’s internal struggles and emotions through repetition and contrast, providing a depth of character that is both intriguing and relatable.

One of the most refreshing aspects of the novel is Katelyn’s willingness to be vulnerable and share her struggles with readers. As she takes risks and faces obstacles, readers will find themselves rooting for her every step of the way. The book is filled with humor, heart, and a sense of adventure that will uplift readers and leave them inspired. While the premise and flow of the story are engaging, the main conflict in the story may feel unremarkable to some readers. However, character development is the main theme explored in this novel, and D’Paiva delivers on that front with great skill. While some complex themes may have been sidelined, the story’s main goal is to take readers on a journey of personal growth and transformation.

Dancing Skies & City Lights by Sheleila D’Paiva is the perfect travel fiction to get lost in a daydream while following Katelyn’s journey of self-discovery. It’s an inspiring and engaging read that will appeal to those seeking a novel filled with hope, adventure, and personal transformation.
