Empathy & the Economy

It’s a summer afternoon in Manhattan, and Vivian Gornick is trying to fasten a spray attachment to the faucet of her sink. She can get the attachment inside the faucet, but it won’t stay in place. Her super says that the attachment’s threads are worn. Gornick detaches the faucet and heads to the hardware store […]

Life, Death, This Moment of June

1. Mrs. Dalloway is a book that makes modest claims for itself. Virginia Woolf first planned to call it The Hours but settled on a title consistent with its story about unimportant people on an ordinary London day. She modeled the book in part on Ulysses, as Joyce modeled his on the Odyssey, but her […]

‘A Great Democratic Revolution’

Alexis de Tocqueville was a study in contradictions: a French aristocrat of proud heritage who trumpeted the inevitable, salutary rise of democracy, using the United States as his exemplar; a cosmopolitan with an English wife and many friends in the Anglo-American world who brandished a fervent French nationalism; an antislavery advocate who felt no discomfort […]

Road Maps for the Soul

Bob Dylan’s new book, The Philosophy of Modern Song, is a kind of music-appreciation course open to auditors and members of the general public. It is best savored one chapter, one song, at a time, while listening to the accompanying playlists, which its readers have assembled on music-streaming platforms. Professor Dylan lectures a little, then […]

A Peopled Wilderness

Should we try to leave nondomesticated animals alone in “the wild,” imagined as their evolutionary habitat, but also known to be a place full of cruelty, scarcity, and casual death? Or do we have a responsibility to protect “wild” animals from scarcity and disease and to preserve their habitats? And what about predation of vulnerable […]

Christ vs Satan – Final Battle for Earth has Begun

The Final Battle for Earth has Begun, Christ vs Satan, by Trinity Royal, is one of the most extraordinary books that I have read this year. The concept of an ongoing war between good and evil, light and dark, that is hidden from the human eye is intriguing and the way that this provocative yin and yang is explained and explored in the book is fascinating.

The author describes the world we live in as a matrix, and in most religions, there is a pull for our souls either toward light or darkness. This book references Christianity, insisting that Satan is on the battlefield to wipe out our souls for judgment day. It perfectly describes the fall of Lucifer, the battle for our souls, why we are in this matrix, and most importantly, how to break off from the matrix that is seemingly designed for us to be controlled. It draws similarities from the Matrix movies, describing how we can take either the blue pill to remain oblivious to what is happening, or the red pill to be shown how deep the rabbit hole goes.

The author says that one can be in the Matrix, but not of the Matrix when describing ways in which it can be broken. A quote that sums up the purpose of this book is, “You can train yourself, through conscious mental effort, to go beyond the false illusions the spiritual Matrix inflicts on you and raise your mind to an awareness of the spiritual realities it keeps from you”.  This is an interesting parallel to Neo’s journey in The Matrix. The book continues to point out ways in which one can be manipulated by darker forces, and how to avoid them.

While I thought the book presents some interesting ideas, the book shapes scripture to convey its poignant philosophy. The concept of free will as well, which I think most religions are based on, takes on a new meaning and understanding through the interference of these forces in our lives. This is an interesting book that I would recommend for Bible study, or to anyone interested in Christian philosophy, Christology, or spiritual leaders.

WINX

WINX: The Problem-Solving Model to Win Exponentially with Customers, Employees & Your Bottom Line is the book every entrepreneur needs. Irma Parone has a wealth of knowledge regarding entrepreneurship and how to run small and medium-sized businesses. The author uses her professional experience to discuss crucial issues in entrepreneurship as she shares tips and problem-solving steps. The arrangement of topics in this book is one of the most appealing features of the book. Irma Parone has solutions to problems of all sizes that business owners face.

The author starts the book by guiding the reader on how to use the book, which is a plus as the reader mentally prepares for the content. The introduction part of the book was also excellent as in this part, the author takes the reader through particular mindsets and discusses emotions and influence decision-making before delving into the primary subject matter.

When Irma Parone talks about entrepreneurship, she means business. Her points are precise, and she gets the reader to fully comprehend one topic before moving to the next. In the first chapter, Irma Parone discusses the decisions we make. She writes about the good, bad, ugly, and awesome decisions and how people arrive at each. This chapter is key as it affects everyone. She not only talks to entrepreneurs but also has notes for employees and people that run companies. From using examples like J.K. Rowling and Bill Gates to sharing her personal stories, Irma Parone knows how to engross the reader. Every story shared in the book is engrossing, and every chapter has entrepreneurship lessons that will benefit both novices and veterans.

Apart from problem-solving and building an empire, Irma Parone also discusses imperative subjects like interacting with colleagues, connecting with prospective clients, viewing different angles of a business problem, handling small and large amounts of data, and dealing with failure. WINX is more than just excellent reference material for business owners, as it also has nuggets of wisdom for individuals who are not in business. Each of the 8-step WINX Processes shared in the book is distinct and gives value to both the customer and employee. The conversations in the book were another excellent feature. I enjoyed reading Irma Parone’s thoughts and her exchanges with other people. These conversations made the book engaging and more fun.

I recommend WINX: The Problem-solving Model to Win Exponentially with Customers, Employees & Your Bottom Line to readers who are unsure if entrepreneurship is for them. By the end of the reading, you will get the confidence you need to run a business and use the practical lessons Irma Parone shared.

A Splash of Colour

Great educational tools are immensely fundamental to child development, but I have found they are scarce in young readers’ libraries. A Splash of Colour, written and illustrated by Susannah Nilsen, has given us a supreme perfect example of an educational book aid.

The beginning starts us off with common sight words that help us while we read, and the writing is simple enough to follow, so young readers can pick up these sight words quickly. Although this story does not follow a specific storyline or have an overall theme, it does, in fact, allow for an entertaining way to learn. The rhythmic verses leaped from the page with a steady pulse that kept the reader hanging from every word.

I recommend this book to any family or young reader who is learning to read or needs help gaining more powerful reading skills. This book will allow for quick and entertaining learning. The illustrations and the sight words were effortlessly cohesive and echo a seamless connection to the sight words allowing for an even better teaching aid.

I believe that the gift of reading is magical and can help us do amazing things. The author explains at the end of the book, “Her classroom experience affords a deep understanding of the value of picture books in the classroom, both as a vehicle to teach across the curriculum and to explore all manner of concepts.” this is something I clearly saw through her writing and the illustrations themselves.

A Splash of Colour is a whimsical picture book that will engage preschool and toddler-age children with its vivid images and entertaining text. Parents and teachers will find this to be a valuable children’s book to have for teaching about colours and introducing sight words. This is a wonderful addition to a home or classroom library.

Pearls On a String

Pearls on a String by Jane Merling is a story set in Canada in the 1980s. Sarah Langner comes from a loving family, and she is an established businesswoman. Despite her good fortune, her faith is shaken when she marries a man, whom she realizes, doesn’t love her. When Sarah discovers a mysterious box belonging to her late grandmother, she learns long-kept secrets about her family’s history.

This mysterious romance develops quickly, with a few unique plot twists, with a memoir writing style. I enjoyed how layered the story became, with new characters and situations that expanded on Sarah’s family’s unknown secrets and hidden past. As she uncovers details of her findings, she gets heavily involved in research and discovers more about her family’s history. Her discoveries led to a more fulfilling life and a renewed faith in romance.

This novel is a rewarding story, with rich characters and plot development, that brings the surprising tales of the past into the present, with exciting but sometimes unexpected results. It’s an excellent read for fans of the mystery genre and for those who enjoy romance. I found the storyline easy to follow and enjoyable to read, with a few unexpected plot twists and unforeseen surprises. In addition, I found the author’s writing style pleasant and personable, which kept me interested from one chapter to the next.

Pearls on a String by Jane Merling is a compelling romantic mystery novel. It’s an interesting, relatable story about finding hidden family truths and discovering a new side of life and fulfillment. I look forward to reading more work and similar stories. I felt connected with Sarah and her journey, and I highly recommend this book!
