Later Disregard

Proust met Joyce one hundred years ago at a party in Paris. From William Carlos Williams’s account: Joyce: “I’ve headaches every day. My eyes are terrible.”Proust: “My poor […]

The Poetry Mouse

A little mouse named Evie lived in a quaint little town near the forest. This little mouse spent her days baking, mending clothes, and keeping her home neat and tidy. However, these things are not what gave her joy in life; instead, she did these things because that is what was expected of her. Evie’s real passion, which she spent hours daydreaming about, was writing poetry.

One day she heads off to the woods with her paper and pen in hand; she spots some rabbits and composes a poem about them there. From there, she writes more until she ends up at a bench talking with Brayden Fox. Now Brayden recognizes that Evie is talented and encourages her to think about what she really wants in life and focus on that, not on what other people think she should be doing with her time.

The Poetry Mouse, written by Derek R. King and Julie L. Kusma, is a beautifully written children’s story and collection of poetry intertwined together to create a whimsical book that children and adults can enjoy. The story of Evie the mouse is cute and adorable, with the watercolor images illustrating the pages. This is a story of self-discovery, breaking out of the mold that society says you must fit into. For children, it teaches them that they do not have to fit into stereotypical molds and that they can follow their passions in life and be happy. It encourages children to dream and take action to make those dreams come true.

The second half of this marvelous book is Evie the mouse’s poetry. Placed on the pages in the illustrations of her journal, it adds to the feeling that the little mouse is composing and sharing a part of her dream with readers. Each poem written about nature is filled with passion and wonder. The poem about the owl gliding through the night sky was my favorite. I can envision the downy feathers as they glide to the earth as the Owl moves across the moon’s silhouette. The poetry is organic, drawing the reader into a moment in time. They will glimpse nature in its pure form for that one breath of time. It is not often such simple poetry that can have the power to make you stop and visualize a single moment that, had it been mentioned any other way, would have been mundane. King and Kusma take the ordinary and transform it into breathtaking.

The Poetry Mouse is an astonishing children’s poetry book that will bring joy and wonder to children reading the story and looking at the beautiful artwork. Adults will find a more profound message in the story, one of following your dreams and stopping to appreciate the simple things in life. This storybook is one that readers will want to own and keep on the shelf for years to come.

The Lay-off House

Doug gets fired from his job, but he sees it coming. The recessive state of the economy and his three previous lay-offs have prepared him for the logistics and emotions of getting fired from his place of work. When he gets his letter, Doug packs up his belongings and heads home, alone and ready to dive again into his routine until a fellow laid-off co-worker shows up at his doorstep. Tyler has been put out by his roommate due to his recent unemployment status. Doug takes in Tyler and, subsequently, other people who were displaced from their jobs and their homes.

The Lay-Off House portrays the common man’s reality in light of the conditions of a recessive economy, which typically leads to lay-offs. As part of the unemployment statistics, these individuals plagued by the same difficulty are brought together and become a family by association. Doug embraces them as his family being in the same boat and thus understanding one another’s employment predicament. Although they are a household of strangers, they grow into a family of sorts.

The story is narrated from the different points of view of the characters. They are of different social statuses and backgrounds and have distinct objectives. However, they are bound by a shared experience which makes the story relatable. Although he had not planned it, Doug’s house becomes a sanctuary for his housemates, and their presence becomes solace to revive his house of loneliness. While cohabiting,  each person discovers their interests and is motivated to follow their dreams. The narrative technique offers clarity and shows the growth of the characters. This is a good story that highlights how relationships can be built and how a community can come together to help one another.

The Lay-off House by David Rogers is a work of contemporary fiction that will appeal to readers who enjoy realism. This novel is a quick and easy read that can be enjoyed in an afternoon and provide readers a look at society as they find the good left in the world together.

Liberator: The People’s Guard: Vol. 1

When duty calls, Tovarich Revanov answers. The zealous young man is a member of the Ruthenian secret police tasked with fishing out enemies of the communist state and clamping down on any anti-government uprising. This time, Tovarich has a peculiar mission: consenting to become a genetically enhanced state-sponsored hero. He approaches his new mission with his trademark commitment and gives his all to protect what he believes to be a just cause. But Tovarich soon begins to wonder if he is indeed on the right side.

Craig Weidhuner’s Liberator: The People’s Guard (Volume 1) is a fast-paced, action-packed novella that pits a totalitarian government against local rebels. It takes an interesting approach by featuring not just the regular tactics that totalitarian states adopt such as media propaganda but also unconventional tools like superheroes — quite imaginative, if you ask me. Weidhuner’s writing is direct and clear and reads almost like an action adventure comic that you can read to young kids at bedtime. This takes nothing away from the immersive experience the story offers, though. Weidhuner definitely has compelling ideas and I reveled in them. He excels at using his work to mirror the hypocrisy that dominates global politics and focuses on two superpowers which he doesn’t name but alludes to (you’d easily figure them out). He also does well at vividly presenting his characters. You can put a face to each key character and understand their personality.

Although Weidhuner got a lot right, and I enjoy the brevity of the story, I would have loved to have seen more depth in the plot and more time given to flesh out the fantastic ending. If you are down for some light reading featuring a good story you can blitz through in a few hours, you might want to check out Liberator: The People’s Guard: Vol. 1 because it is entertaining.

Grief and Her Three Sisters

Jerry Lovelady’s Grief and Her Three Sisters is an exquisite collection of poetry that touches upon themes of grief, regret, death and love. These poems convey the experiences of the author along with the lessons he has learned. Lovelady’s poems are nature-infused and colored with wisdom, pride, and acceptance. The central idea of these thought-provoking poems are to help those who have regrets come to terms with it and heal from it.

Lovelady’s writing is beautiful and heart-wrenching at times. The reader can clearly imagine the scenarios the author lays out for us, making the reader feel like they are transported to a different place and time. There are many poems that make the reader reflect on the past, whether good or bad, but the author always ends a poem with a sense of calm and acceptance.

This emotive and flowing poetry eases some of the heartaches in a world that seem quite short of love right now. Lovelady’s poetry takes an insightful and almost mystic approach to poetic expression. His poems tend to pry apart the wrappings of his internal emotional conflicts, displaying what he finds there in a spiritual context that directs the reader toward the redemption of the human spirit more than toward a stark, surreal escapism.

The author has transformed his personal journey into one so many readers would be able relate to. I recommend these poems to anyone who is struggling with grief, and to anyone who has overcome the hurdles it presents in life. Grief and Her Three Sisters is a beautiful and emotional collection of poetry. This book will help heal a grief-stricken heart and assures the reader that they are not alone.

Scars and Scales

Scars and Scales by KC J. Hutchins is the story of Xerxes, a dragon in the midst of a tense war that threatens the lives of mythical species, including his. With the ability to shift between dragon and human forms, Xerxes, while mighty, is vulnerable to those who want to destroy him. He finds himself confined to a cage under the command of a ruling queen, who condemns Xerxes to a life of misery until she gets what she wants. How far will Queen Desley go to satisfy her power-hungry desires? Will Xerxes be able to able to trust others and unite the lands against Delsey, or will the entire dragon population be decimated?

The first thing that I noticed about this book was how deep the lore is. This makes sense considering KC J. Hutchins blog. He’s obviously spent a lot of time developing this world and it shows in this immersive story. This novel immerses the reader in a fantastical world of intriguing magic, dragons, and royalty. The descriptions throughout the story were extensive and help create a clear picture of the landscape in this epic adventure story. There is a lot to take in and new ideas to absorb to fully understand the book, but it all slowly comes together the more you read.

This is an engaging ensemble story with characters that are compelling and develop organically as the story progresses. Add this to the exceptional dialogue which keeps the plot moving and you have a novel that feels as grand as Lord of the Rings, with a little less exposition.

Scars and Scales by KC J. Hutchins is an exciting epic fantasy novel that brings together an eclectic band of fascinating characters and sets them on a perilous quest that is consistently entertaining. Highly recommended to fans of high fantasy or anyone that is looking for a well-defined fantasy world.
