Becoming Amartya Sen

In 1901, at the age of forty, the writer Rabindranath Tagore founded a small school at Santiniketan, in a rural part of Bengal about a hundred miles north of Calcutta. Twenty years later he added a university alongside it—Visva-Bharati, whose name joined together the Sanskrit words for world and wisdom and whose motto was “Where […]

The Circuitous Sublime

There is a book that I’ve read and reread maybe six or seven times—it’s only 101 pages long, but I can never remember the ending. The book is Sweet Days of Discipline by Fleur Jaeggy, a novella first published in Italian in 1989 and translated into English in 1991. I find it almost impossible to […]

In 2017, when Hilary Mantel was midway through her Wolf Hall trilogy, she remarked that “historical fiction comes out of greed for experience. Violent curiosity drives us on, takes us far from our time, far from our shore, and often beyond our compass.” Anyone venturing into Andrea Barrett’s fictional project of the past thirty years […]

Almost every day between 1703 and 1730, Frederik Ruysch’s home at Bloemgracht 15, a narrow, four-story townhouse on a canal in Amsterdam’s Jordaan district, was open to visitors wishing to view “something unheard of, surpassing all belief, unless one should see it oneself.” On the ground floor, they first encountered a series of cabinets made […]

The heat between them is enough to ward off the chilly Alaska weather conditions in the next Fortunes of Lost Lake novel from USA Today bestselling author M. M. Crane.

Bowie Fortune has always liked a risky proposition. A bush pilot out in the Last Frontier, flying in and out of places that give most pilots nightmares is what he lives for. That and his off-the-grid home out by Lost Lake, where his family has been living up close with the elements for generations. When his sister dares him to participate in the local version of a mail-order bride contest, he’s not interested–but Bowie doesn’t back down from a challenge. Even when the challenge turns out to be a woman who makes him want every last thing he knows he shouldn’t.

Entering a summer-long publicity stunt in far-off Alaska might seem extreme, but Autumn McCall has always had an indomitable spirit. She took care of her sisters and father after her mother died, and this is more of the same–since she intends to win the contest. Immersing herself in the pioneer lifestyle is one thing, but what she isn’t expecting is brooding, sharp-eyed Bowie with his wicked smile. As the sparks fly between them, will they burn each other alive–or learn how to simmer their way to a much bigger prize…together?

A $10,000 prize and his sister’s dare have Bowie agreeing to spending the summer with Autumn McCall in the local government’s attempt to draw attention to Lost Lake, Alaska. Bowie, a former marine and bush pilot, is known as the reckless sibling and settling down isn’t on the agenda. Autumn is the oldest sibling and has taken care of her father and her three siblings after the death of their mother. Now that Dad is remarried, she has one last task to accomplish before she can begin a life of her own.

Five reasons to curl up with Reckless Fortune

  • The premise of complete strangers spending the summer working and living together in Alaska will have you slipping right in to witness and enjoy each moment from their first meet.
  • Fantastic chemistry, awkward moments, rock hard abs and side grins will pull you into the story and have you laughing out loud. You’ll love the banter, the view and find Autumn refreshing. I loved her attempts at wildness survival and attitude.
  • A red dress, a long kiss, and a camping trip will leave you sizzling and dreaming of your own Alaskan getaway.
  • Lost loves, undeniable feelings, family and friends delivered All The Feels.
  • Characters you’ll love and circumstances that will tug at your heartstrings will have you reading into the wee hours for a happily ever-after.

While this is the second Fortunes of Lost Lake story, it can be read on its own, although I encourage you to read Bold Fortune. It was hilarious, with a delicious blend of sweet and steamy. You can read my review here.

Onward, At Last

Onward, At Last by Kevin Howard is a thought-provoking exploration of modern social issues and shows how we can improve humanity and our interconnected societies. We analyze these issues through a series of commentaries divided into five volumes. Each chapter has a catchy title and is quite short. The arguments are always illustrated by current and historical events such as the COVID-19 pandemic, the direct consequences of climate change, or the history of America’s economy. Howard’s main thesis is that he believes in “universal oneness”.

The strength of the book is that it takes inspiration from several religions and is quite inclusive in that respect. This illuminating book also provides rationale that is backed up by numbers or historical facts, ensuring the information is grounded as well as insightful. The author also raises an interesting issue in education where he sees a lack of preparation for children and teenagers becoming adults.

While the length of the chapters make consuming the information very easy, I would have liked to have taken a deeper dive into some subjects and taken more time to fully shape an assertion or commentary. The reader should be aware that, although the book offers answers, the examples and politics mentioned are centered around the United States.

Onward, At Last is a stimulating read that highlights contemporary societal issues and provides some answers. I recommend this book to readers in search of meaning in life, or to someone wondering how humanity can unite, or to anyone that wants to understand how we can improve if we join forces. I was able to find hope for society in this book, given the current events occurring around the world.

Adventures of the Negassi Brothers

Adventures of the Negassi Brothers, written by Ezra Negassi, follows a pair of brothers Isaiah and Azariah. These two brothers desperately want to participate in a traditional coffee ceremony with their friends and family. However, this is not just any normal old coffee no. This coffee is extremely special and transports the brothers through the history of their ancestors and the background of their culture, connecting them to the very essence of their beings.

Encased in this short children’s book is a heap full of gorgeous history and is presented to us, the readers, uniquely. Once allowed to join in on the coffee ceremony, the brothers find they are magically transported with each sip to a different place and time in their family’s history. Allowing them to experience the beauty of their culture firsthand.

I believe learning about our family history and continuing traditions is essential regardless of anyone’s background. This is the main message the author has achieved whilst taking the reader on a thrilling and intriguing ride. The illustrations echo the news, helping the reader connect with the tone, setting, and environment. Such an easy and fast-paced read for any young reader would surely get young minds to ask questions about their backgrounds.

Adventures of the Negassi Brothers is an exciting children’s book that takes readers into the past to view part of African History and ancient civilization. They will learn about the importance of family tradition and the value of honoring the past. This would make a wonderful book for introducing a multicultural learning unit to a classroom.

Oleander Oasis

Most of the book takes place in Galveston, a city located in the Gulf of Mexico region of the state of Texas. A fresh-start story involving four main characters. Mel is a twelve-year-old girl who is shrewd and vivacious. Beth, the main character and narrator of the story, is a strong, determined, and resilient woman. Paul, the owner of the furniture office, is initially arrogant, but throughout the book, he presents us with his reasons for creating a cold wall that protects his affectionate and protective heart. And Jake, a man with blue eyes and a broad smile, flirtatious and amused.

Anna J. Walner wrote the book Oleander Oasis inspired by her own trajectory. A fluid read with captivating characters that address important and necessary topics. It is important to emphasize that there are passages of situations that contain domestic violence and suicide.

The book full of surprises is a mixture of suspense and drama, but it can also draw sincere smiles from the reader. It addresses significant issues surrounding domestic violence, such as the system’s failure to protect victims, the trauma it can inflict on the people involved, and the difficulty in dealing with post-traumatic stress. Besides, of course, the physical consequences.

The book enchanted me because the author presented a new look at love, acceptance, and companionship. Without a doubt, it’s the kind of narrative that involves you, makes you root for the characters, and makes you miss the characters when you finish the book. I believe that the idea of inspiring people has been fulfilled, and it certainly makes us believe that it is possible to achieve what we ask for by praying every night.
