New York Times bestselling author Nalini Singh’s dangerous and beautiful world of archangels, vampires, and mortals has never faced a threat this cataclysmic…

Raphael and Elena are experiencing their first ever year of true peace. No war. No horrors of archangelic power. No nightmares given flesh. Until…the earth beneath the Refuge begins to tremble, endangering not only angelkind’s precious and fragile young, but the very place that has held their most innocent safe for eons.

Amid the chaos, Elena’s father suffers a violent heart attack that threatens to extinguish their last chance to heal the bonds between them and make sense of the ruins of their agonizing shared history.

Even as Elena battles grief, Raphael is torn from her side by the sudden disappearance of an archangel. But worse yet is to come. An Ancestor, an angel unlike any other, stirs from his Sleep to warn the Cadre of a darkness so terrible that it causes empires to fall and civilizations to vanish.

This time, even the Cadre itself may not be able to stop a ticking clock that is counting down at frightening speed…

Sophia Rose’s Review

Peace, at last- or so they think until the earth rumbles beneath their feet and natural disasters begin plaguing the world. The Guild Hunter series by Nalini Singh remains a consistent page-turner wonder, including this latest series’ installment.

Archangel’s Lineage is the sixteenth book in a series that feels like urban fantasy, but occasionally has crossed into the realm of paranormal romance to fit in an expanding cast of characters finding their happily ever after against the setting of global intrigue, world battles, and powerful immortal beings.

Archangel’s Lineage follows a large cast of recurring characters from the series led by Rafael and Elena and a few new players. Elena and Rafael are a couple who have a deep and abiding love and partnership, but this latest situation has them mostly tested by being forced to work apart when Elena’s father from whom she’s estranged has a near fatal heart attack and his life is hanging in the balance.

This is perhaps Elena’s final chance to make peace within her family. She helps lead in Rafael’s absence, caring for their beloved New York even while sitting at her father’s hospital bedside. Meanwhile, Rafael and the other archangel’s attempt to mitigate the damage in their regions and hunt down answers for what seems intent on bringing down the world and the Refuge.

There is a sense of impending disaster and the tension mounts as the clock ticks on. Nalini Singh does such action-suspense with character and world background development all blended so well. The ‘villain’ was no person to fight, but the story was as riveting as ever, as survival for all was the goal. The most powerful beings, archangels, are made to feel their own helplessness and struggle to survive like the weak human mortals and immortal angels and vampires who looked to them for a miracle. A miracle comes from the ancient past to guide them, and I can’t wait to see how this new development will affect the ongoing series.

A former minor Guild character who is a newly turned vamp and top hacker for Rafael’s crew and an enigmatic vampire gets an emerging and intriguing secondary story that is ongoing. Oh look, the babies are entering adulthood years and Elena is facing her Guild Hunter friends and family growing old on her.  There is a look in on how things are going for ‘Sparkle and Bluebell’ and some of the other couples like my favorite Titus and Lady Sharine. I was struck as Elena learned further how people, including Ilyium’s annoying narcissistic father, are not only black and white, but have surprising depths. And, oh, that brief mention of a creepy archangel of disease makes me curious for what will come in the future.

Another abso-fab entry in the series that fans will devour. I can’t wait for the next installment and heartily recommend this series to both paranormal romance and urban fantasy fans who enjoy angel and vampire warrior and romance action.

Casino Redux: Unveiling the Global Casino Network of Chinese Organized Crime

Casino Redux: Unveiling the Global Casino Network of Chinese Organized Crime by Anthony Cabot offers an insightful and meticulously researched glimpse into the clandestine world of organized crime in China and its global reach. While the common perception of Chinese organized crime might be limited, Cabot’s exploration unveils the complex and often unnoticed impact of criminal syndicates, extending far beyond the borders of China.

Cabot’s narrative style, rich in detail and intensity, transforms an exhaustive study into an engaging read. The book resonates with the intrigue of fiction, yet it remains firmly rooted in the sobering reality of the Triads’ expansive control. From foot soldiers to the affluent leaders orchestrating criminal activities, the author reveals the intricate layers of this underworld, operating just beneath the surface of everyday life and often eluding legal repercussions. A significant portion of the book delves into the Triads’ influence over the modern gambling industry, drawing parallels to cinematic portrayals like Scorsese’s “Casino.” However, Cabot’s analysis transcends mere storytelling. By dissecting the complex web of the Triads’ operations and their impact on significant gambling hubs such as Vancouver, Sydney, and Macau, he uncovers their endeavors’ staggering scope and profitability. Readers will find themselves enthralled by the depth of the underworld’s infiltration into seemingly innocuous aspects of life, such as tourism and entertainment.

Casino Redux: Unveiling the Global Casino Network of Chinese Organized Crime not only educates but leaves a lasting impression, altering perceptions of the gambling scene and the unseen presence of criminal syndicates. This book is a compelling read for anyone interested in the intricate dynamics of organized crime and its global implications.

THE VOID

Book Review

Safdar Ali’s The Void is a compelling story that delves deep into the intricacies of human emotions and societal constructs. Through a first-person account, the book captures a raw and unfiltered glimpse into the character’s life, exploring themes such as patriarchy, societal norms, personal struggle, and cultural dissonance. Set against the backdrop of rural Northern Africa and Europe, The Void takes readers on a journey through time and space and reflects on personal and societal changes along the way.

Ali’s writing style is deep and introspective. The use of first-person narration not only brings a sense of immediacy but also allows readers to delve into the protagonist’s psyche. This style captures the nuances of the character’s internal struggles and societal observations. While I enjoyed the story, at times, the narrative felt a little overwhelming due to its dense and introspective nature, which might challenge the casual reader.

The ideas in The Void are thought-provoking and resonate with contemporary societal issues. The exploration of patriarchy and its impact on individual lives is particularly striking. I think Ali’s detailed portrayal of the protagonist’s upbringing and experiences in a patriarchal society paints a vivid picture of the societal norms and expectations that shape individual identities. The book also tackles themes like migration, cultural clash, and personal identity, making it relevant in today’s globalized world.

Ali’s exploration of cultural dissonance, especially the protagonist’s experiences in Europe, is another aspect of the book that I liked. The story offers insights into the challenges of integrating into a new culture and the psychological impact of leaving one’s homeland. I think it would be enriching to include a variety of perspectives to gain a more comprehensive understanding of these complex issues.

As the narrative culminates, the protagonist’s introspections deepen, particularly around his experiences with racism and his migrant journey. His grappling with his place in a world marred by racial prejudices echoes the resilience of a Shakespearean hero. This layer of reflection highlights his remarkable endurance and the monumental grit required to navigate and overcome the societal barriers erected by both his homeland and the new world.

The Void is a deeply reflective and insightful book that provides a rich exploration of societal norms, personal identity, and cultural clashes. Readers interested in mainstream fiction novels with psychological depth that provide a societal critique will find it engrossing.

Torrent Tragedy

Torrent Tragedy, the Curse of the Urn by Raquel Zepeda Fitzgerald, the first installment in the Nocturnal series, introduces readers to Serge Michaels, a prodigious teenager whose foray into cybercrime takes a dark, fantastical turn. At sixteen, Serge’s escalating involvement with e-book piracy draws the ire of a mysterious author, I Sorceress, leading to the delivery of an ominous urn and a chilling curse.

This intriguing mystery novel conveys a poignant message about the consequences of digital piracy. Zepeda Fitzgerald’s narrative style is refreshingly straightforward, lending the book a fluid and accessible quality. The author deftly uses this fictional framework to cast a spotlight on the very real and pressing issue of cybercrimes.

Fitzgerald’s choice to interweave elements of karma and supernatural curses offers an interesting twist on the theme of retribution in the digital age. These aspects, while not deeply explored, add a unique flavor to the tale. Zepeda Fitzgerald maintains a dynamic and brisk narrative pace, which contributes to the novel’s engaging and swiftly unfolding plot. This approach, while it streamlines the story, suggests the potential for further exploration in future installments. The foundation laid in this book hints at a deeper, more intricate storytelling that could be developed further, with the possibility of more complex plot twists to enrich the narrative in subsequent volumes of the series.

Torrent Tragedy, the Curse of the Urn stands out for its original concept and its exploration of the ramifications of cybercrime through a supernatural lens. I think readers will really like its gripping storyline, which maintains a brisk pace and ensures a quick and engaging read. Zepeda Fitzgerald’s succinct storytelling and the novel’s moral undercurrent make it a thought-provoking read, particularly for those interested in contemporary issues told through a fantastical narrative.

So Often Misunderstood

A.D. Metcalfe Author Interview

Street follows a twelve-year-old runaway from Miami who ends up in New York City to escape the sadistic abuse of his brother. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?

The story begins at a pivotal point for the protagonist, Johnny: his escape. That felt like the best place to start because it is where life really begins for him. Despite the uncertainty of what lies ahead, things had gotten so bad at home, there was no choice but to risk leaving. In the first pages, you are able to see Johnny’s strength and tenacity.

In many contemporary coming-of-age fiction novels, authors often add their own life experiences to the story. Are there any bits of you in this story?

While many of the scenes were not directly pulled from my life, the feelings behind them were very real. I grew up in New York City during that same era, hung out in many of the same locations, and some of my characters are loosely based on, or amalgamations of real people. I have endured abuse, violence, and absentee parenting. I spent my formative years in bars and clubs, had friends who were dealers and addicts, and experimented with all kinds of drugs. Unlike many of my peers, I was able to get away from that lifestyle before it swallowed me. Those experiences have definitely influenced the perspective of this novel, and a lot of my writing in general.

What were some themes that were important for you to explore in this book?

It was important to point out how abuse robs you of a childhood. Ditto the streets. But sometimes, in the absence of a stable home life, you can form your own family. Because urban street kids are so often misunderstood, I needed to show that these characters are smart, precocious, and driven, and that the bond they have with each other is unshakable.

What is the next book that you are working on, and when can your fans expect it to be out?

Right now I am in the revision process for the sequel to Street, and hoping it will be out by the end of this year. I am also drafting a third book in the same series.

1970s New York City is borderline bankrupt. Police departments, public schools and other municipalities are struggling under massive layoffs, buildings are abandoned, and the streets are rife with crime and drugs. For Johnny Alvarez, a precocious young runaway, the decay and lawlessness offer camouflage and opportunity. He squats in an empty apartment in a derelict Washington Heights tenement and gathers a gang of streetwise kids, most of whom struggle with their own issues. Johnny is haunted by the abuse he suffered at the hands of his sadistic older brother. The crew tries to keep his head straight with belonging and levity, but the turbulent nature of the street triggers unwanted memories, which spin Johnny into recklessness amid the city’s seedy underbelly.
