In Bone Deep, two men kidnap Dr. Henry Powers, former FBI agent Cate Wilde’s fiancé. This was an intense story for both Cate and Henry. In fact, I devoured it in one sitting as there was no place to really stop. I needed to know the outcome.

Elliot quickly pulled me in as Henry finds himself abducted by two masked men. Apparently a third man has been injured. Henry’s life is in peril if he doesn’t save the third man.

The story gives us both Henry and Cate’s perspectives as he tries to save a life and his own. Meanwhile. Cat is relying on her agent skills to track their movements and find Henry.

Tessa and Logan will lend their aid. Along the way Cate makes a startling discovery, one that will forever change their lives. I loved every nail-biting moment.

A frantic chase to catch a grave robber reveals a startling discovery in this tenth installment of the Widow’s Island novella series by Wall Street Journal bestselling author Melinda Leigh.

Deputy Tessa Black spots a man disturbing a grave in the local cemetery and gives chase. But when Tessa catches him, she learns that the ghoulish trespasser wasn’t robbing graves; he was burying a box of bones.

With the help of her fiancé, park ranger Logan Wilde, Tessa discovers that the remains belong to a missing teenager from a nearby island. After the girl disappeared nine months ago, police labeled her a runaway. Now, though, it’s clear the teenager was murdered.

When the only witness is an uncooperative teenager, Tessa and Logan must find the killer before the boy becomes the next target.

In The Wrong Bones, a man is found disturbing a grave in the local cemetery. He soon has Deputy Tessa Black and her fiancé, park ranger Logan Wilde digging for answers. Those answers lead to a nine-month-old missing persons case.

This was another exceptional case with plenty of twists and turns. We’ve got strangers on the island, a kid camping in the woods and bones. I loved it. The tale was perfect for the spooky season, with its dark tones and graveyard.

We get updates on life at home and get to spend some moments enjoying life on the island, family and friends. The romance is always there and fans of the series will enjoy it. I know I closed the book with a smile.

A Hamburger Christmas

A Hamburger Christmas, by J.T. Bishop, is the story of two detectives working to solve a string of robberies throughout high-class neighborhoods. Detectives Daniels and Remalla have their own plans for Christmas, one spent with his wife and the other mourning his late fiancé. Unfortunately, the robbers they have been searching for will cross paths with these two detectives on Christmas day.

The story begins with two teenage boys, Simon and Gary, robbing expensive homes. They are given their marks by a man named Egg, the neighborhood thief. The brothers began stealing after having extremely little provided by their mother. Gary looked up to Egg after his best friend Trey was murdered. Throughout the book, Simon is weary of Egg and worried that his brother is just being used to make him money.

Detectives Daniels and Remalla have been trying to solve a string of burglaries spanning 6 weeks. However, they have little to go on until Christmas morning. Remalla stays at his cousin Chico’s house for the holiday. After losing his fiancé in a car accident, he wants to get through this first set of holidays alone. The next mark on the boys’ list is a house that will be vacant for Christmas- Chico’s home. Gary and Simon come face to face with Detectives Remalla and Daniels in Chico’s house.

The writing style in this thrilling book is strong throughout. The characters are written so that there is a strong sense of self, each with their own characteristics, even in a short story like this one. The detectives have similar characteristics that are shown in the young boys. Remalla and Gary are connected through grief after they each lost a loved one. Daniels and Simon are both looking out for their brother/partner.

This novella had a good pace and little filler information. The characters are likable and relatable. A Hamburger Christmas, by J.T. Bishop, is full of action, has a strong central character, and has an excellent storyline. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys action, mystery, thrills, and memorable characters.

Scarlet Whispers

Vampires and werewolves are walking among us. Whether sipping blood mimosas or serving pancakes, navigating life alongside humans presents new challenges. And then some challenges come exclusively with being immortal. Family ties will be tested, whether blood or coven, as love challenges the norms of supernatural relationships.

Young vampire Anne has been guarding her heart for decades since her love and life were stolen from her by a cruel immortal in the dark alley. But even frozen in immortality, her soul desires to love and for a connection, which she doesn’t believe is possible anymore. So who will succeed in unlocking Anne’s desires? A dashing ancient vampire and an innocent young human are both willing to risk it all to win her affection. But who will succeed? And what would be the cost?

Scarlet Whispers by Abby Farnsworth brings the first installment of a teen-friendly love story featuring popular and ever-captivating themes of supernatural and romance. Unlike many other stories, Anne is not your average dainty heroine who needs rescuing. Instead, she is a vampire willing and able to fight for what she loves. Her friends are equally strong, decisive, and capable, which builds the story around emotional and moral struggles rather than the traditional power dynamics prevalent in romance novels. The book’s ending leaves enough interest and wonder to build the reader’s anticipation for the next book in this fantastic series.

Scarlet Whispers is a gripping paranormal romance story for younger teens. With excellent writing, an original story, and building the plot around strong females, this is sure to be a series that will catch the attention of teen readers and hold their interest for many books to come. A break from the traditional vampire love story, this fantasy novel will stand out and draw in a new generation of readers to the genre.

Emma Just Medium

Being the middle child can be a tough spot to be in. Emma Just Medium: The Beach Dilemma by Laura Wiltse Prior is a young reader’s chapter book that follows Emma, the middle child of her siblings, on their family trip to the beach. This fun children’s book shows how being ‘medium’ isn’t such a bad thing.

Readers are thrust into this charming adolescent world with the collision of ‘Little’ and “Big’, Emma’s youngest and oldest brother. Both brother’s pick on Emma and know just what to do and say to get her worked up, as siblings do best. There is a constant back and forth of the unfairness of Emma being the middle child or ‘medium’, as she calls it, that I soon began to empathize with her and see her point of view. We see her life through her lens and work out with her the best way to cope with her situation, but also watch as she loses herself when trying to not being ‘medium’. I felt triumphant with her when she regained her true self and stayed true to who she is. This is all conveyed in an easy to follow and engaging story that is all due to the exceptional writing.

This is one of the best children’s chapter books I have read in a long time. Not only as an adult, but from what I can remember reading as a child as well. Each character is incredibly relatable and the real-life scenarios they find themselves in are relevant to kids today. I can see this book being part of a Scholastic book fair or one of those books children often checkout from the school library.

The illustrations perfectly fit the story. They allowed me to place scenes in my head and keep it continuing in a cinematic way as I read the story. This could be an entire book, T.V., or movie series that I would enjoy as an adult as well as share with my children. Emma Just Medium: The Beach Dilemma is a fun children’s book with charismatic characters that kids will enjoy following.
