New York Times bestselling author Jayne Ann Krentz returns with the first novel of the Lost Night Files, an exciting new romantic suspense trilogy about a night that changed three women forever—but that none of them can remember.

Seven months ago, Pallas Llewellyn, Talia March, and Amelia Rivers were strangers, until their fateful stay at the Lucent Springs Hotel. An earthquake and a fire partially destroyed the hotel, but the women have no memory of their time there. Now close friends, the three women co-host a podcast called the Lost Night Files, where they investigate cold cases and hope to connect with others who may have had a similar experience to theirs—an experience that has somehow enhanced the psychic abilities already present in each woman.

After receiving a tip for their podcast, Pallas travels to the small college town of Carnelian, California, to explore an abandoned asylum. Shaken by the dark energy she feels in the building, she is rushing out when she’s stopped by a dark figure—who turns out to be the women’s mysterious tipster.

Ambrose Drake is certain he’s a witness to a murder, but without a body, everyone thinks he’s having delusions caused by extreme sleep deprivation. But Ambrose is positive something terrible happened at the Carnelian Sleep Institute the night he was there. Unable to find proof on his own, he approaches Pallas for help, only for her to realize that Ambrose, too, has a lost night that he can’t remember—one that may be connected to Pallas. Pallas and Ambrose conduct their investigation using the podcast as a cover, and while the townsfolk are eager to share what they know, it turns out there are others who are not so happy about their questions—and someone is willing to kill to keep the truth from coming out.

The Lost Night Files trilogy focuses on Pallas Llewellyn, Talia March, and Amelia Rivers, complete strangers who were drawn to the Lucent Springs Hotel, only to awaken the next morning with no memories of what occurred. Each woman had physic abilities, but after that evening, their skills were enhanced. The three have set up a podcast investigating similar stories in search of answers. Sleep No More focuses on Pallas Llewellyn who travels to the small college town of Carnelian, California after receiving a tip.

Ambrose Drake believes he witnessed the murder of a woman, but he is suffering from sleep deprivation and sharing that information will only make him look more unhinged. Unable to find proof on his own, he reaches out to The Lost Night Files, and sets up a meeting at an abandon asylum. The tale that unfolds delivers suspense, shocking discoveries and a slow burning romance as Ambrose & Pallas work to uncover what really happened during Ambrose’s sleep study.

I am loving the premise behind the podcast, and the abilities both Pallas and Ambrose possess. She can sense energy and draws in awaken dream state. Ambrose has an uncanny ability to read auras and sense things before they happen.

Krentz does a wonderful job of delivering a suspenseful story while laying the groundwork for the overall trilogy arc. Those familiar with her work will feel right at home with the paranormal elements and abilities. Mentions of familiar places and the mystery regarding the missing memories will trigger memories of previous books, people, and events. Not to worry if you haven’t read her previous works, Krentz just uses Easter eggs.

The romance was a slow burn as Pallas and Ambrose build trust, understanding and help each other. I liked them both and their actions, connections and development felt genuine.

The mystery wrapped up but still left us looking for answers regarding the overall story arc. I closed the book satisfied but eager for the next book in the trilogy.

The bones of the Carnelian Hospital for the Insane still stood, surrounding her on all sides. The four-story structure had been constructed of stone and stout timber but the interior, now sunk in an eternal gloom, had been slowly crumbling for decades. She was forced to scramble through a minefield of broken chairs, rusted bedsprings, sagging doors, shards of broken glass, and the discarded medical equipment of another era.

The scene came straight out of her nightmares. At least this time the place wasn’t on fire. She probably ought to see another therapist about her little obsession with scary old buildings but she craved answers and she had concluded no therapist could provide them. She also knew she would not be able to let go of her morbid fascination until she got the answers.

She was halfway through the rubble of the hospital lobby when a figure detached itself from the shadows and came toward her, blocking the path to the door.

Focused on escape, her senses still in an adrenaline overload, she yelped in alarm, swerved to the side and tried to change course. Her intention was to steer a path around the stranger but the sudden move caused her to stumble into a three-legged table. It toppled under her weight. Of course it did. Sometimes she wondered if every stick of furniture in the world was out to get her.

She knew she was going down. She thought about the jagged chunks of glass that littered the floor. This was going to be a bad fall. She could only hope the messenger bag would protect her from the worst case scenario.

The man who had been in her path was suddenly at her side. A strong hand gripped her forearm, steadying her.

She was shocked by the speed with which he had moved. It was as if he had known she was going to change course and run into the table.

“It’s all right,” he said. “I’ve got you.”

The physical contact sent an electrifying jolt of intense, intimate awareness across her senses. Maybe she was still in the automatic drawing trance. Maybe this time she really had stayed under too long.

“Let me go,” she screamed.

She was amazed and reassured when the ear-splitting cry escaped her throat and echoed through the ruins. In her dreams she was always voiceless.

“Shit.” The stranger released her, clamped his hands over his ears and took several steps back. “I’m not going to hurt you. I just want to talk.”

Freed, she headed for the front door again. She reached into the messenger bag, groping for the Taser she had carried religiously since Lucent Springs.

She managed to grab the electroshock weapon but in her frenzy she dropped it. The stranger scooped up the device. Simultaneously he used his free hand to keep her from tripping over a door that had come off its hinges and was now on the floor.

Another flash of breathtaking intimacy rattled her nerves.  She had never experienced anything like it. She froze, frantically trying to figure out what was happening. Before she could recover from the shock the stranger released her and stepped back.

“We’re getting off on the wrong foot here,” he said. He held the Taser just out of reach. “If you’ll give me a minute, I can explain.”

He was still between her and the door. She launched herself at him, hoping the head-on attack would catch him by surprise.

He didn’t appear surprised but he moved out of the way.

“Don’t touch me again,” she said. “You’ll be sorry.”

Clutching the messenger bag she rushed past him. Miraculously she did not stumble this time.

“I’m the reason you’re here,” he called after her. “Ambrose Drake. I sent the email about the asylum to the Lost Night Files.”

She shot through the doorway, out of the ruins and into the foggy daylight of the rugged Northern California coast. His words began to sink in. They did not register fully until she was a few feet away from her car.

The mention of the podcast made her scramble to a halt. She recognized his name, too. She was here today because of a listener named Ambrose Drake.

She realized there was one other vehicle parked in front of the asylum. Drake’s car, no doubt. She should have heard him arrive. The asylum stood on an isolated cliff above a cove, connected to the main road by a long, narrow, graveled lane.

Yes, she ought to have heard his car but she had been so deep into the trance she had been oblivious to the warning sounds of gravel under tires and footsteps on the creaking, groaning floorboards of the asylum.

The realization of just how vulnerable she had been while in her other vision was unnerving. In the old days—before Lucent Springs—she had never gone so deeply into the drawing trance.

She retreated a few more steps and flattened a hand on the side of her car to steady herself. Drake was on the front steps now. He had the Taser in his hand but he made no attempt to pursue her.

He didn’t need to chase her to make her nervous. His slick, fast reaction ability aside, he looked like he had barely survived a shipwreck followed by a long stretch of time lost at sea on a life raft. He still had some muscle on him—the line of his shoulders beneath the windbreaker was strong and sleek–but it was obvious he had lost too much weight in the recent past. The fierce planes and angles of a face that at one time had probably qualified as interesting, even intriguing, could only be described as haggard now. He had the eyes of a man who was haunted by ghosts.

“You’re Ambrose Drake?” she said, trying to process the swiftly moving events.

“Yes. I didn’t mean to scare you. I apologize. I’m the one who suggested this old hospital would make a good series for the Lost Night Files podcast.”

The Road Renounced

Packing up her father’s effects ahead of his funeral, Sam Ryan’s daughter discovers her grandmother’s diary. Her reading takes us on a twisting journey through history – WWI, the Spanish flu, prohibition, and the depression. Moving back and forth between the present and the past, from the USA to Belgium, Kaye Schmitz’s The Road Renounced straddles time and space. Finally, the worlds converge when her grandfather, an aspiring baseball player, goes to war and, once more, briefly, at her father’s funeral. By then, we know a whole lot about her grandparents’ life that the narrator wisely chooses not to tell the rest of the family.

One would expect a book that presents graphic scenes of war, alcoholism, spousal abuse, and suicide to be depressing. Not this one. The Road Renounced is a pleasure to read from start to finish. The opening “Letter to My Readers” pulls readers in immediately because Kaye Schmitz talks to them like an old friend, just like Maude writes in her diary. “Who would have thought a diary from a hundred years ago would have kept you glued like this?” (305) The narrator’s curiosity and compassion compel readers to read on. They might even do just as she did, for example, searching on Google for a song her father sang.

Weaving family history, homage, and meticulous research, Schmitz creates engaging scenes with a Forrest Gump effect – recognizable historical moments revisited with a fictional character present. Need to know where historical fact ends and fiction begins? Check out the detailed “Author’s note” at the novel’s end. The structure is masterful. Logical devices bridge the spatial gap till our Americans arrive in Europe. And then there is the trunk to link the past and present. There are concerns about women’s rights, war and patriotism, parental responsibilities, self-esteem, and mental health. Readers will be left with much to consider as they follow along on this journey with the protagonist.

The Road Renounced is a gripping drama and family saga that takes historical events and gives them a personal touch. Readers will find themselves drawn into the lives of this family as they learn about their past, good and bad, and are compelled to see the story through and learn who these people really are.

Choke

Choke by Lisa Towles is a psychological thriller that will leave you wondering what’s real and what’s not.

Kerry Stine is living a normal life working at San Francisco General Hospital, but suddenly everything turns upside down for her. A patient is missing, and she’s the number one suspect. Confused and not understanding what’s happening, she has to run from the police as strange occurrences are happening around her. Dangerous men seem fixed on getting something from her, but she can’t even begin to understand what they could possibly be needing her for.

Just as all this is going on, Grace Mattson, a botanist, and her friend Adrian Calhoun are in serious trouble. Adrian has secretly researched and found a medical treatment that may change the lives of many for good. Now influential people are risking everything to put their hands on Adrian’s research and control the narrative. Paranoid, they have to watch their backs and try their best to find their way out. Both storylines eventually come together, making sense of the characters’ experiences.

Thrilling and with a good pace, this book captures the readers’ attention from the start. Every event described is confusing yet interesting, leaving one with the expectation of seeing more. The story has lots of ramifications and suspense; it’s hard to guess what will happen next or where the story is going. The perspectives are also constantly changing in every chapter, allowing the reader to see a different intriguing angle that will eventually intertwine with the overall story.

While reading, one immediately falls in the position of the characters, who are confused and don’t understand what’s happening to them. They often even question their mental state, making them unreliable and leaving the readers on their own journey trying to figure out what’s real. Because of this, the story is gripping and constantly changing, giving interest to every little detail. Furthermore, with time the attachment to the characters starts to grow, and their relationships solidify in times of uncertainty, providing a new dimension to the entire story and making it even more appealing.

What can be trusted? You’ll have to thoroughly read the story to find out. I give Choke by Lisa Towles 5 out of 5 stars. A psychological thriller and hard to put down, this is the sort of book that one will inevitably want to finish in one sitting to finally find out the whole truth.

That Sucked. Now What?

That Sucked. Now What? by Dr. Neeta Bhushan is a journey of resilience, hope, and renewed faith in life. The author reassures her readers that it’s okay to hit rock bottom, as life is no walk in the park, and we all face challenges. She offers warmth in her words, and there is inspiration and passion in her tone. It’s the type of book that will engross readers within the first few pages.

The book centers around the author’s very eventful life, beginning with her childhood, where she grew up in a loving home, the experience of tragic loss, and embarking on a career, marriage, and a path to wellness. It’s a perfectly written book, where every story and experience becomes a valuable lesson shared by the author in a gentle manner. As an individual who endured loss, Dr. Neeta Bhushan is an exceptional storyteller who does an exceptional job of weaving memories and reflections on life with personal experiences.

While the author doesn’t dwell on hypothetical situations, she shares anecdotal experiences and realities. When she discusses tragedy, the author shares helpful tips on how to overcome difficult situations and achieve success and uplifting words to instill renewed confidence in the reader. I found the balance of topics discussed by the author done in a balanced way so as not to lean too heavily on tragic experiences but just enough to guide readers through helpful, practical advice. Dr. Neeta Bhushan’s writing style is excellent.

I found the book resourceful and gained a lot from the author’s lessons and how people can embrace life, despite difficult situations, including tragedy. The author brilliantly shares how you can get yourself out of misery and rise again to a satisfying life. While not all the stories are relatable to everyone, the author has a way of conveying a message that will give readers an understanding where she is coming from and concepts that a wider audience can digest, such as privilege versus entitlement.

That Sucked. Now What? by Dr. Neeta Bhushan is an exceptional read. It’s a fantastic book that gives readers a sense of empowerment over past traumatic experiences and how to overcome these situations with impressive results. I strongly recommend this book.

The Visitors

The Visitors by Andrew Cahill-Lloyd is the charming story of two aliens from the planet Aeon, Bjorn, and Zorn, who are tasked to observe Earth. The pair watches as the religious wars on the planet lead it to destroy itself. They are soon charged with the task of going back in time to try to save Earth from itself by revealing proof of alien existence to humans to prove there are bigger things out there. Teaming up with animals from around the world, they set their plan in motion to save man. Will their endeavors be fruitful in enlightening mankind, or have they caused bigger problems?

This was a sweet read that was out of this world. It was fun seeing the misadventures these aliens and animals get themselves into, and I feel kids would enjoy its wacky cast of characters. I love a good romp through time and space, and this filled that niche perfectly. This piece had good heartwarming messages I think a lot of people need to hear in this day and age. The humor in this book balanced out the heavier topics and made this an enjoyable rescue mission that didn’t take itself too seriously. I mean, who doesn’t love a well-placed fart joke when you’re trying to save the world.

I did feel the flow of the book needed some work. I felt it was too fast-paced, and you really didn’t have time to marinate on each revelation before you raced off to the next one. I wished the descriptions had been fleshed out a little bit more in some areas; I couldn’t get a good image in my head at times. The character’s personalities, however, shone through and kept me smiling and laughing.

The Visitors is a gripping children’s science fiction novel filled with aliens and animals. I highly recommend this book if you love a good adventure through time and space. Its fun characters, heartwarming messages, and humor make this an entertaining story.

Pantheon: The Phantom

Pantheon: The Phantom is Joshua Landeros’s second book in the Pantheon series. It is a sweeping fantasy epic that manages to carry on the first book’s story while expanding its world and bringing in enjoyable new characters.

The book is set in Landeros’s world of Avah and follows its people as they come to terms with the events of the first book and struggle to recover from the Hollow Wars. Just as people were hoping things were calming down, a new threat, the Pact of Ram has, arisen. As this new threat rises every allied nation is called to combat it. But who is really behind this new threat, and who can be trusted?

While this may be a conflict that spans nations, Landeros makes the wise choice of focusing his narrative on the everyday people dragged into it. The Phantom primarily focuses on Palkan Sowell, his daughter Athaliah and the rest of their people as they are pulled into a conflict they want nothing to do with.

The book features a diverse range of characters, and Landeros excels at fleshing them out. As in his earlier works, Landeros focuses on characters from all sides of the conflict, emphasizing their motivations, whether political, religious or purely self-preserving. While at first, the lines between good and evil seem clear cut, over time, it becomes increasingly clear that not everyone can be trusted, and even the heroes might have to get their hands dirty.

This is still a sweeping epic, however. When Landeros isn’t focusing on his individual characters, he is writing massive battles that often follow several different perspectives at once. While his writing is excellent across the board, Landeros’s writing is at its best when he is in the thick of battle. His battles are bloody, violent, and well-paced.

The pacing, in general, is excellent. Landeros deftly manages the balancing act of fleshing out the world he has created, forming deep characters, and keeping the pacing brisk. While his characters are enjoyable enough that I would have liked to spend more time with them, Landeros makes the wise choice to keep the plot moving ever onward.

The world-building is excellent here. Landeros has created his own world and filled it with different nations, races, and peoples, all with their own in-depth histories. Thankfully Landeros avoids too much exposition, and the reader gets to learn about his world in an organic way rather than being bogged down in lengthy explanations and exposition. If you’re a fan of fantasy epics, exciting battle scenes, or political intrigue, The Phantom is the book for you. While it might be a good idea to start with the first book if you want to follow everything, as a newbie Landeros made me feel welcome and I was never too lost. Highly recommended.
