Then What Happened?

The first written evidence of what are known in English as The Arabian Nights or The Thousand and One Nights dates from the early ninth century. Two damaged and discolored pages from a book called The Thousand Nights, discovered in Cairo but originally from Syria, sketch the primal scene of storytelling: a character named Dinazad […]

Space-Age Magus

In the fall of 1959 the Museum of Modern Art erected three strange structures by Buckminster Fuller in its outdoor garden: a hundred-foot-long “octet truss space frame” of aluminum tubes, a “tensegrity mast” thirty-six feet high, and a grand “geodesic dome”—a three-quarters sphere assembled from greenish plastic triangles. Passersby on West 54th Street could see […]

Khamenei’s Dilemma

How far has the Islamic Republic of Iran advanced along the road from solidity to collapse? Are the protests that were prompted by the death in police custody of a young woman, Mahsa Amini, on September 16 comparable to the strikes and demonstrations that led to the Shah’s downfall in 1979, or has Amini become […]

A killer is looking to silence them, once and for all.

FBI agent Jordan Wallace is close to cracking the human trafficking case she’s been working, when she does the one thing she should never do: let her guard down. The botched undercover mission is semisalvaged by the last-minute appearance of criminal psychologist Patrick Law, but Jordan can’t imagine making a worse first impression. Especially when she’s partnered with Patrick moving forward.

Patrick’s innate ability to get inside a criminal’s head is an asset for the Krewe of Hunters. But Jordan wishes she could protect her own thoughts from her new partner. Patrick assures her that both she and her thoughts are safe with him, but Jordan’s less sure about her heart. Letting someone have her back has never been her strong suit, but with a dangerous killer still at large, trusting in Patrick might be the only thing keeping them alive.

Sound of Darkness, Aura of Night and Voice of Fear are all novels in the Krewe of Hunters series, but all involve the case surrounding the Embracer and the Law siblings (triplets) who have unique abilities.

This story belongs to Patrick Law, a criminal psychologist and a consultant for the Krewe of Hunters. He helped in the previous novels and this time has his dog, an Irish Wolfhound, with him. We are introduced to FBI Special Agent Jordan Wallace when she is captured by human traffickers while undercover. She is rescued by Patrick and agents after deceased officer Archie alerts him to the danger.

The Krewe is still looking for John Smith, whom they believe is the head of the organization. The tale that unfolds has Patrick and Jordan working together along with the previous couples as they try to interrogate suspects, save victims, and cut off the head of the snake.

As always, Graham delivered plenty of danger and they get into several intense situations. Sparks fly and simmer as these two connect. I devoured the book in two sittings. The romance felt genuine, and I liked both characters; professionally and as individuals. It was great seeing a guy who respected his partner’s abilities and supported her ideas.

The story shed light on human trafficking and the inner workings of some networks. John Smith’s network was disturbing and how he caught people up from crew to victims was chilling.

I was glad to see the case wrap up and get closer to several threads and character lines. I am looking forward to seeing where the Krewe of Hunters goes next.

Bugles in the Dust

Book Review Icon

Written by George Levy, Bugles in the Dust charts the astonishing story of the Chicago Fire department from 1865 to 1913. Painstakingly researched and assembled, the book maps out the men involved with detailed information on ages, nationality, and family taken from historical records. In addition, it combines many historical reports from newspapers to men’s transcripts relating to handling specific fires. This provides a fascinating illumination into the historical context of the fire department and how social issues and politics shaped individual outcomes.

Through his research, Levy makes the connection between the veterans of the civil war and the men serving in the Civil War. Around 29 civil war veterans served in the Chicago Fire Department. Many of those veterans were of Irish descent. The book begins with a detailed rundown of the veterans employed by the CFD, detailing the battles in which they fought and other notable information.

The book gives a review of the overall management of the CFD from its transformation of being served by a volunteer firefighting force that formed in 1935, which was well organized but unable to cope when faced with widespread fires. The first paid fire department came under the control of the three-men police board, who it seems were somewhat unsuited to the role as it gave many jobs away to friends and family who were not qualified for the roles they applied for.

I really enjoyed how this book pieced together the historical information to give color and a clearer picture of events around the CFD and how they faired in the four main catastrophic fires that rocked Chicago.

The men fighting these fires had an uphill battle with limited equipment and a great area of the city to protect. The book greatly illuminates the firemen’s struggles, from dangerous fires to poor equipment, hard living conditions, bureaucracy, and corruption.

My favorite part of the book was the individual transcripts of the firefighter’s testimony to the police board and the fire Marshall regarding the events at The Great Chicago Fire in 1871. This testimony really breathed life into the story and was extremely interesting and absorbing to read.

The beginning of the book is mainly facts and figures relating to civil war veterans. It is quite a dense amount of information you are not immediately connected to. However, if you persevere, you soon become engaged with the narrative.

Overall I found the book educating and interesting. The use of historical sources and pictures uncovers and displays some riveting information and facts. It is extremely well-researched, and I recommend it to history lovers and people who may not usually choose to read this sort of book, as it adds significant value to the reader’s knowledge.

SMUGGLED

Smuggled by Angela Karanja is the story of Tuliana, a fourteen-year-old orphan from Kenya, who finds herself trapped in a world of human trafficking. Barely remembering her mother from childhood, Tuliana grew up never having a home of her own or a sense of stability. Then, one morning, she finds herself on a plane with a group of kids and has no idea where she’s going. When they arrive in London, Tuliana is separated from the kids and whisked away in a stranger’s car, which marks the beginning of her new life.

Terrified of her new life and unaware of her fate, Tuliana hangs on to what she remembers: Jonathan, a friend she made on the plane. He becomes her anchor in a way she would have never imagined and vows to find her. As she moves from one home to another, she is treated differently in each setting, though she is always a servant (slave). She later realizes that she’s a victim of human trafficking. Jonathan realized Tuliana was a victim of something uncanny as soon as she was snatched and began to investigate her whereabouts, concerned for his friend.

This emotional book does a fantastic job of diving into the bleak and often invisible lives of children and people who are victims of human trafficking. It’s a tragic reality that we often don’t associate with the modern world. The author brings the real story of one girl, who represents many children globally who fall prey to smuggling and slavery. Karanja carefully explores children’s different perspectives and trauma experiences during this process. Tuliana is a great character who displays great strength, intelligence, and resilience in her life.

I highly recommend Smuggled by Angela Karanja for the humanity it gives victims and survivors of human trafficking. It’s a great story about an important topic that deserves more attention on a local and global scale.

I Made A Place For You

I Made A Place For You by Damian White is a book of eloquent poetry that includes more than twenty short poems, with illustrations by Francesco Orazzini. Many of the poems have a religious theme, focusing on God, heaven, or the devil, including God’s TypewriterSacred MathDevil BaitA Sinner’s Plea, and Playing God. Other themes include death, deception and hiding your true self, and faith and fate. This is the author’s first published book of poetry and many of the poems were inspired by his personal experiences with homelessness.

I enjoyed reading this book of poetry and the author left me wanting more. The author’s words invoke vivid and interesting imagery, and I liked the variation of structure and style between the different poems. It’s always interesting to me to have a glimpse into the world from someone else’s unique perspective.

I enjoyed the drawings that were included in this book. They were interesting images and I liked the use of bright colors. The various aspects of the illustration requires more than a quick glance to notice all the nuances. Each poem is accompanied by an illustration which adds an extra creative layer to this book of poetry, setting it apart from others of its kind. Although I have read a number of poetry books, I have never read a book of poems with pictures in it, and I was surprised to find how much I liked the inclusion of illustrations in this book. I liked comparing what the author had written to the illustrator’s visual representations.

Many of the poems in this book were quite short, only a few lines, and none of the poems were longer than one page. I would have liked the book to have included more poems, or for some of the poems in the book to be longer in length, but this is only because I enjoyed them so much. Because half of the pages of the book contained pictures, I was able to read it very quickly.

This is an emotionally-resonant, observant, and thought-provoking collection of poetry. I heartily enjoyed I Made A Place For You for its potent, authentic and lyrical poetry that expertly utilized beautiful imagery to add additional layers to an already fascinating collection.
