A Child Is Being Aborted

My partner and I tried for a baby before our now ten-month-old daughter was born—a situation utterly different from the accidental conception of my eighteen-year-old son, my first, when I was twenty-three. Their arrivals mark different times in my life, different moments of desire, partnership, hardship, anxiety, maturity. Pregnancies—their termination, loss, completion, or abstention—determine a […]

On the Downbeat

“Day one post balloons.”  That is how Joan inscribed her book After Henry, which she gave me the day after the balloons dropped and the Democrats finished their 1992 convention. Those four words, for me, captured Joan and the moment itself: the superficial excitement of the convention, the silly balloons dropping, but also a beginning. The first […]

“Ever Freer to Speak My Mind”

“The theocratic movement to advance religiously based governance—the antithesis of genuine religious freedom—has installed as the law of the land the essentially unreasoned position advanced in Dobbs,” writes Laurence H. Tribe in the Review’s September 22 issue. His is a thorough indictment of the illogic, legal inconsistencies, and arrogance of the Supreme Court’s ruling to […]

The Struggle Over Verdi

The Parma Verdi Festival, dedicated to Italy’s greatest opera composer, opened Thursday night with one of his strangest and most disturbing operas, La Forza del Destino (The Force of Destiny). Set across the landscape of a Europe at war, Forza is an opera of frustrated passion and vindictive obsession, with choruses alternately rapt in solemn […]

In Thorne Manor there is one locked door. Behind it lies a portal to the twenty-first century, and nothing is going to stop Miranda Hastings from stepping through. After all, she is a Victorian writer of risqué pirate adventures—traveling to the future would be the greatest adventure of them all.

When Miranda goes through, though, she lands in Georgian England…and in the path of Nicolas Dupuis, a privateer accused of piracy. Sheltered by locals, Nico is repaying their kindness by being their “pirate Robin Hood,” stealing from a corrupt lord and fencing smuggled goods on the village’s behalf.

Miranda embraces Nico’s cause, only to discover there’s more to it than he realizes. Miranda has the second sight, and there are ghosts at play here. The recently deceased former lord is desperate to stop his son from destroying his beloved village. Then there’s the ghost of Nico’s cabin boy, who he thought safe in a neighboring city. Miranda and Nico must solve the mystery of the boy’s death while keeping one step ahead of the hangman.

It may not be the escapade Miranda imagined, but it is about to be the adventure of a lifetime.

I am absolutely loving this series (and several others) by this author. Miranda Hastings is a writer, explorer and good with a sword. She slips through the time slip intending to explore the future… only she goes thirty-years back in time from the Victorian era she lives in….back to where Nicolas Dupuis, a privateer accused of piracy, will die.

Miranda saves Nicolas Dupuis life, but mischief is a foot and soon the two are trying to solve a murder to set a ghost free, attempting to stop a corrupt lord who is overtaxing the good people of this seaport and keeping Dupuis from a date with the noose.

This was such an engaging tale from Miranda’s inquisitive nature to Nicolas and his whispered words in French. Ghosts, aid from the lord’s granddaughter and moments in caves to explore one another had me reading this in just two sittings.

I like the concept that Armstrong has developed that the time-slip sends the traveler where they are needed. Each book is an adventure with a delightful romance. As we travel, we learn about the places and times and get to enjoy a mystery or two.

The ending has me excited about the next book in this series. We get hints at the possible adventure, and I hope they come to fruition.

On a side note. These stories can be read as standalone. Armstrong does a great job of making each hold its own. I recommend reading the novella Snowstorms & Sleigh Bells if you’d like to learn how Miranda knew about Nicolas Dupuis.

About Kelley Armstrong

Kelley Armstrong has been telling stories since before she could write. Her earliest written efforts were disastrous. If asked for a story about girls and dolls, hers would invariably feature undead girls and evil dolls, much to her teachers’ dismay. All efforts to make her produce “normal” stories failed. Today, she continues to spin tales of ghosts and demons and werewolves, while safely locked away in her basement writing dungeon. She’s the author of the NYT-bestselling “Women of the Otherworld” paranormal suspense series and “Darkest Powers” young adult urban fantasy trilogy, as well as the Nadia Stafford crime series. Armstrong lives in southwestern Ontario with her husband, kids and far too many pets.

Enemies of Africa

Enemies of Africa is a factual and historical description of how widespread the slave trade was and how there is still widespread racism and discrimination even today. Author Jaiden Baynes has done an excellent job and provides readers with an essential read. Baynes’ writing will open your eyes to how the slave trade started and the factors that led to it being so widespread.

Enemies of Africa is a well-researched and planned work of pure fact. I thought I knew a lot about the slave trade, but there is so much that the history classes left out. This eye-opening book filled in all the blanks, and I am more educated on the slave trade now than I ever was by a textbook.

It is very apparent that so much research went into this novel to ensure factual and precise information. This book explains how the slave trade started and why. It also showcases just how horribly slave traders treated their slaves. Enslaved people weren’t treated like humans. They were beaten and starved, and their children were sold into slavery as well. I think it is essential for information like this to be shared. While this is a heavy topic to read about, Jaiden Baynes lays out the facts in a way that makes absorbing this appalling piece of history possible.

Enemies of Africa is an educational resource on the dark history of slavery. This factual book teaches readers the things that average history courses skip over. Unfortunately, there is a cultural bias toward Africans, and I think everyone needs to read what this book says about it. Enemies of Africa is worth the read. Well done, Jaiden Baynes, for laying out the information and touching on a challenging subject in a digestible way.

Immortal Treasures

Immortal Treasures, by SJ. Turner is the story of a girl who has experienced tragedy. She was born with magic, and after everything she has experienced, she fears it more than anything. Olivia is the key to revealing secrets of the past and bringing back a sovereign vampire.

Olivia just wants to be a normal girl and live a life without magic. However, her grandma and aunt know she has great power if she’d just unlock it. While going through antiques, they find a book belonging to a legendary vampire clan. Olivia’s grandmother believes the book was created by the Goddess and will only be read by the one with the blood of the interpreter. She believes this book is what will finally get Olivia to accept the power she holds. When opening the book, Olivia can read the script when all others have only seen blank pages.

Olivia meets Cassian Laurent, Cash, while using her power to fight off a vampire. He gains her trust and asks for her help reading what is in the journal so they can resurrect his father, Julien. Through her readings, Olivia is transported in time and shown memories of Julien Laurent, the leader of the vampire clan. Together Cash and Olivia, along with help from both sides, discover the secrets of the timekeeper’s journal and bring Julien back to life.

The writing style in this book is strong throughout. The plot moves quickly and keeps the reader engaged. The relationships between the characters were interesting to read, especially the love developing between Olivia and Cash. The layering of stories and differing timelines added depth to the book, making me want to keep reading.

I am giving Immortal Treasures by SJ. Turner, 5 out of 5 stars. This book has a great storyline with intricate characters. However, the ending left me wanting the sequel immediately. I would highly recommend this book if you love mysteries, romance, magic, and strong characters.

Taken Away

A fantastic race through space told from the first-person perspective of First Officer Genevieve Autumn graces the pages of Taken Away by London Knight. A dying planet: a desperate race for resources out there in the vast blackness of space. With the building blocks of so many preceding science-fiction tales firmly supporting it, we travel on an adventure that takes us across the universe and spans hundreds of years. But the conspiracies have been in play for much longer than we realize, as the cryogenic sleep that was supposed to support Genevieve and her crew until they reached their planet of salvation goes wrong, and the new world is more hostile than they expected.

The world of Taken Away is carefully constructed and told in the first person. This style of narration lends a sense of ownership to the reader. We are there; we are experiencing it. London Knight does a great job building the characters that will carry this story and gives a slightly different twist to the trope of a space crew that is frozen for a big adventure. It has been done before, but Knight peppers the awakening of the team with an interesting side effect that hasn’t been done before.

The excitement is present from the get-go and doesn’t stop. There are problems with the ship, with the sleep, with the awakening of the crew, and the unexpected side effect they find themselves experiencing after their freezing. And that’s just what happens at the start. It seems like everything that could go wrong has gone wrong, but that is just the beginning. There is a bigger conspiracy at play here and a much bigger reveal the deeper you travel within these pages.

If you are looking for an exciting science fiction book that will keep you engaged and on your toes as you flip through the pages, then you must pick up a copy of Taken Away by London Knight. Not often are science fiction stories told through the lens of a female character who is more than just a pretty face. Genevieve Autumn is a First Officer, and she absolutely deserves her position. She’s earned it through merit, and her skills bring the story together. The ending could be interpreted as a beginning of sorts: perhaps there will be a part two for readers to eagerly look forward to.

Taken Away is a riveting science fiction adventure with a strong female protagonist. Readers will be taken through space on a mission that challenges them on all levels and is filled with uncertainty and unexpected events keeping everyone on edge.

No Unpaid Passengers

No Unpaid Passengers is an emotionally riveting collection of poems written by author Pam R. Johnson Davis. The collection is organized into six sections: I: Unpaid Pain, II: The Next Stop, III: Alone on the Night Train, IV: Love on the Ride, V: End of the Line, and VI: Afterword: Anybody Can Write a Poem (Or How Rejection Turned into a TED Talk). Serious themes such as racism, assault, divorce, and religion intermingle with themes of love, friendship, joy, home, and beauty to take readers on an incredibly raw and relatable journey.

Author Pam Johnson Davis does an incredible job of telling a story that touches everyone in some way. Davis plays into expectations with her use of slang and familiar language, using those devices to bring to life personal experiences and paint clear pictures of real-life situations that readers can relate to. Through those grounding narratives, Davis can so effectively tackle less tangible themes of love, loss, betrayal, grief, hope, and joy. Through her own experiences with marriage and divorce, Davis leads readers to question their ideas of relationships, commitment, and love. Through her experiences as a black person, a woman, and a member of the church, Davis brings up ideas about religion, trauma, sexism, racism, determination, optimism, and acceptance, both of self and others. Following this pattern, No Unpaid Passengers is able to operate as a book of revelation, showing readers the pervasive connectivity of the human experience: what you go through, someone else has gone through, and what you feel, someone else has felt.

I highly recommend this collection of raw beauty and vulnerability, in which Davis depicts her experiences. She writes not as an individual but as a representative of the human experience, providing an opportunity to connect both with the unfamiliar outside of ourselves and that which hides within.

No Unpaid Passengers is an emotional collection of poetry that takes readers on a journey through human experiences in a way that will stay with them long after they put the book down. These poems will leave readers feeling everything from one end of the spectrum to the other, a true representation of life, the joys, and the sorrows.
