In our April 4 issue, Daphne Merkin immerses herself in My Name Is Barbra, Barbra Streisand’s “970-page, indexless brick of a memoir.” From this feat of self-mythologizing emerges “an extended, complex portrait of a woman gifted early on with an extraordinary talent combined with an unyielding drive, fueled by a mixture of insecurity and audaciousness (although […]
A World of New Beginnings follows a brother and sister who are relocating to a new country and working through the challenging emotions that come with such a big change. What was the inspiration for your story?
The inspiration for A World of New Beginnings came from my personal journey as a writer, a nomad child, and an expat mom. Before embarking on our first relocation with my own children, Emma and Eliott, I searched for a book to help explain the process and what to expect. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find anything that spoke to the entire experience. Drawing from my own background and experiences, I felt compelled to fill this gap and provide a reassuring resource for children facing similar transitions. As a result, I decided to channel my creativity into crafting a story that would normalize the whirlwind of emotions that come with relocating to a new country and prepare children for this life-changing experience.
I found the art in this book greatly enhances the story and helps children relate to the characters. What was the art collaboration process like with illustrator Ale Tadeo?
The collaboration process with illustrator Ale Tadeo was an absolute delight. Ale not only brought my vision to life with her vibrant illustrations, but she also understood the sensitivity of the theme and added depth to the characters and the entire universe of the story. Our collaboration was smooth and seamless, with Ale meticulously following my brief and storyboard to the letter. The artwork in A World of New Beginnings greatly enhances the story and helps children relate to the characters on a deeper level. I’m thrilled to say that Ale and I will continue collaborating on future projects, bringing more enchanting stories to life together.
What were some ideas that were important for you to share in this book?
In A World of New Beginnings, it was important for me to convey the significance of family support throughout the relocation process. I wanted to highlight how the unwavering support of loved ones is fundamental for navigating the challenges of change and embracing new beginnings. Additionally, I aimed to showcase the beauty of discovering new places and forming connections with people from diverse backgrounds, emphasizing that every destination holds wonderful treasures waiting to be explored and cherished.
It was also important for me to convey the message of resilience and hope amidst change. I wanted to feature the rollercoaster of emotions that children may experience when relocating to a new country, while also emphasizing the strength and adaptability they naturally possess. I aimed to normalize the feelings of uncertainty and fear, reassuring young readers that it’s okay to feel a mix of emotions during times of transition and that eventually, everything will be alright.

Katharine’s Remarkable Road Trip follows a 77-year-old woman who decides to make the 300-mile drive to her new home alone and ends up on an unforgettable journey filled with life lessons. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?
I knew that I did not want to write a traditional biography in any sort of chronological order. I started and stopped this project several times until I realized that the best way to get to know this remarkable woman was to join her on a road trip! It allowed me the perfect opportunity to share her insights, joys, regrets, and life experiences through personal reflection and meeting friends, both old and new.
Katharine’s character takes everything in life in stride, embracing the moments as they come. What were some driving ideals behind your character’s development?
I believe that much of Kate’s personality and view of life was shaped through decades of experience. She has seen and accomplished so much and realizes that she needs to embrace and revel in whatever time remains. I viewed her as wise and witty, and she doesn’t take herself too seriously or have anything left to prove.
What were some themes that were important for you to explore in this book?
Friendship was a key for sure. Kate had the joy of many good friends in her life which is a testament to the type of person she was–generous, caring, loving. Also, I wanted to explore the possibility of aging with grace, passion and dignity, the importance of believing in yourself, the value of experience and self-reflection, the benefits of giving back (time, talent, and treasures), and the joy of looking forward to small pleasures–a good cup of coffee or a slice of cake!
What is the next book that you are working on, and when will it be available?
I am just putting the finishing touches on the third and final installment of the Miranda Quinn Legal Twist trilogy: Miranda Fights will be published in December, joining Miranda Writes, and Miranda Nights. After that, who knows? I love writing stories about quirky, wonderful women and their search for happiness, redemption, fulfillment, joy, and love.
Rite of Passage: Transitioning from Wantrepreneur to Entrepreneur provides readers with a transformative approach to enhancing business leadership designed to increase productivity and achievement. What inspired you to write this book?
In business culture, showing fear and unconsciously exhibiting self-doubt is perceived as weakness and a lack of confidence. This can cause major problems, including customer loss or employee turnover. These emotions are rarely discussed and can lead to mental and physical health issues in addition to potential business failure. By writing Rite of Passage, I wanted to bring these unspoken challenges to the surface and offer tangible support to fellow entrepreneurs.
What is your experience in the business world, and how did it help you write Rite of Passage?
In addition to having corporate experience, I have several years of first-hand entrepreneurial experience. I co-founded a Software as a Service (SaaS) company that began with a Flipchart diagram. We went on to earn a U.S. patent, built the business from the ground up, and successfully exited in 2020. I now consult and coach entrepreneurs. Essentially, Rite of Passage is my journey, and it’s consistent with that of other entrepreneurs.
What is one piece of advice you wish you had been given when you were younger?
I tend to be hard on myself if things do not go right the first time. The one piece of advice that would have helped me as a new entrepreneur is, “It’s okay to make mistakes. It means you’re learning. However, repeating the mistake is being careless, and that’s unacceptable if you want to be successful. So, keep learning and moving forward.”
What is the next book you are working on, and when will it be available?
The next book will focus on how to establish a personal brand online. It will pick up where Rite of Passage left off. It will be a blueprint to help entrepreneurs become thought leaders by publishing thought-provoking content and getting through the online noise to connect with potential customers. The alternative is to remain the best-kept secret online.
In 2024 and beyond, LinkedIn will be your resume, your digital entity (content publication across the Internet in addition to your website) will be your portfolio, and Google Page 1 will be your business card.
Nick Rozak’s children’s book, The Plastic Tree and His Friends, invites young readers into a unique urban tale that intertwines the themes of diversity, the significance of pollinators, and self-acceptance. Set against the backdrop of a city playground, the story unfolds from the perspective of a plastic tree, an unconventional protagonist that engages readers with its journey of self-discovery and understanding of the natural world. As the seasons shift, the plastic tree becomes acutely aware of its differences from the surrounding living trees. This narrative arc elegantly mirrors the feelings of alienation and self-doubt that many individuals experience when confronted with their uniqueness. It is a poignant exploration of identity and belonging, relayed in a manner that is accessible and relatable to a young audience.
The narrative takes an intriguing turn when a group of friends, serving as symbols of diversity and acceptance, choose to inhabit the plastic tree. This decision sets off a series of events that enlighten both the tree and the city’s inhabitants about the crucial role of pollinators in our ecosystem. This dual message — recognizing the importance of pollinators and embracing our differences — is woven seamlessly into the story, imparting valuable lessons without overshadowing the narrative’s whimsical charm. Complementing Rozak’s storytelling are the gentle and whimsical illustrations by Victoria Skakandi. Her artwork adds depth and visual appeal to the narrative, enhancing the story’s accessibility to a young audience.
The Plastic Tree and His Friends is a heartwarming and educational children’s book that promotes the values of diversity, inclusion, and environmental awareness. Nick Rozak’s picture book resonates with readers of all ages and reminds us of the intricate and beautiful tapestry of life where each element, no matter how small or different, has a role to play.
