A New Force Set Loose

Some events refuse to wither and die in our collective memories. The French Revolution is one of them. It prompted admiration and loathing—many observers felt both at once—because it linked the dazzling new dreams of democracy, human rights, and universal education with the equally novel nightmares of the Terror and the inexorable guillotine. No wonder, […]

‘She Talk Her Mind’

Zadie Smith’s first play is a brash, triumphant celebration of one woman’s voice and freedom, but it exists because its author found herself backed into writing it. “My beloved Brent,” her London borough, was campaigning to be chosen as London’s 2020 Borough of Culture, and Smith casually agreed to let her name be used. A […]

As a boy growing up in the postwar American ur-suburb of Levittown, Long Island, the cartoonist Bill Griffith learned to read through Ernie Bushmiller’s sublimely absurd and gloriously minimal Nancy comic strip, which ran in the daily newspaper alongside strips like Blondie, Dick Tracy, and Terry and the Pirates, tickling readers across the country seven […]

In his Decretum, a tenth-century manual on canon law, Bishop Burchard of Worms directed priests to ask female parishioners if they had inserted live fish into their vaginas and kept them there “for a while” until they were dead, then cooked and fed them to their husbands to stimulate passion. He prescribed two years of […]

Circuit Breakers

Judges reveal themselves in footnotes. They use citations as signals and shout-outs, displaying their predilections and alliances. When Anthony Kennedy and Stephen Breyer served on the Supreme Court, they would occasionally invoke judicial decisions in other countries, not because those rulings were binding in the United States but because they wanted to demonstrate their internationalist […]

Keep Your Mouth Shut

HOW SAFE IS YOUR CHILD?

How safe is any child when the courts, social services and the legal profession have blind spots, cracks and stick-in-the-mud procedures that child abusers and love rats can exploit?

How much peace of mind would you enjoy if your children developed a medical condition so little understood, you are banging your head against a brick wall trying to get medical professionals to take it seriously, or even stop them finding fault with you?

How vulnerable would your children be, facing the bullying of classmates and the exasperation of schoolteachers, police officers and social workers who think the fault is yours?

Every parent should know what Carole Lonsdale and her children have endured and every judge, police officer, schoolteacher, social worker and lawyer should take notice.

Thanks to her, other parents can be forewarned in this, her courageous, raw and honest account of their lifelong ordeal.

The Innocent for the Guilty

Troy Daniels, his mom, and his little sister are on the run from those who refuse to believe Troy is innocent of the charges he is accused of. Set in the late winter of 1891, the family is forced to leave their home and travel west, where they end up in a small ranching town called Spring River, Wyoming. Troy was tried for murder and acquitted, but the family of the victim still believes he is guilty and will go to extreme lengths to get justice for their lost loved one. Can Troy’s family’s faith in God strengthen them as the truth about that dark night comes to light?

The Innocent for the Guilty by Sandi Rebert blends a heartwarming Christian romance with a thrilling Western novel. Rebert does a fantastic job with flashbacks and dialogue to tell the full story of how the family ended up where they are. This literary device keeps readers engaged because they feel like they are there listening to Troy tell his story and not getting it from a narrator. The author also has a captivating way of describing things. This passage stood out to me, “Time seemed to crawl by on the stumpy feet of a tortoise yet fly by on the swift wings of an eagle.” This writing style helps readers connect to the characters and the situation, allowing them to feel the deep emotions that this story brings out.

What set this novel apart for me in the Christian fiction genre is how the author used her characters to spread the word of God without coming across as a sermon. Instead, the power of faith is shown through Troy and his family’s unwavering faith and the gentle way they share their beliefs with others by being themselves, how they treat others, sharing their faith when asked, or through casual conversation. There is also the message of forgiveness that no matter what, holding onto hate only feeds darkness in the soul. The author shows that forgiveness is not easy but is essential for inner peace.

The Innocent for the Guilty is a story of faith, family, and forgiveness. The novel is for any reader who enjoys a heartwarming story set in the Old West. The quick pace and the relatable characters make this a great book to pick up when you need a story of hope for when everything seems like it is falling apart around you.
