The rain trees are pink again. They litter with a shrug, unorthodox for October, whose vintage is Keatsian, clammy with muscat fug;the rain tree’s blush is sober. In the north a torch is passedfrom maple to oak to beechas geese begin their processional; the rain trees aren’t classedwith myths we preacheither of the Idyll or the Fall. A […]

The Forest Eaters

In August 2017 Eliane Brum, one of Brazil’s best-known journalists, moved from the great metropolis of São Paulo to Altamira, a small, violence-plagued city along the Xingu River in the Amazon. Brum worked for the country’s most respected newspaper, Folha de São Paulo, as well as other smaller news outlets, where she was known for […]

‘A Fiendish Fascination’

Antisemitism has appeared in many times and places—and, as David Anthony shows in his informative, unsettling Sensationalism and the Jew in Antebellum American Literature, in many genres. Anthony has unearthed hostile portraits of Jews in various realms of US culture during the two decades before the Civil War: in pulp fiction, in novels about southern […]

An Unlikely Life

Historical fiction, whether written or filmed, has more than a little in common with the art of translation. Like a translation, it can never be entirely faithful to the original source material. In both cases, artistic license is a necessity, not an option. But the nature and extent of the artistic license can vary enormously. […]

Clothes as Fresh as Salad

One morning in 1952 Gaby Aghion, an haute-bourgeois Egyptian Jewish émigré to Paris, woke up with a feeling of emptiness. “It’s not enough to eat lunch,” she told her husband, Raymond. The Aghions were hardly just fixtures at the Café de Flore. Back in Egypt, Raymond had purchased Al Majalla Al Jadida (The New Magazine) […]

Timmy the Martian

W.B. Thompson’s Timmy the Martian is a charming tale that invites young readers into the world of Timmy, a green Martian distinguishable by three moles on his face. Seeking companionship, Timmy embarks on an adventure to Earth, where he hopes to forge new friendships. However, his arrival on Earth doesn’t go as smoothly as anticipated, with his unique appearance initially causing fear among the children he encounters. This emotional journey takes a positive turn with the introduction of Henry, a boy whose three facial moles mirror Timmy’s, leading to an instant and meaningful connection despite their interplanetary differences.

Thompson skillfully weaves a narrative that addresses the theme of diversity and acceptance. The shared trait between Timmy and Henry serves as a clever device to explore and celebrate differences, imparting an important message about inclusivity to young readers. The story unfolds in a way that’s both engaging and empathetic, making it relatable for children who may feel different for various reasons. The book’s visual aspect is as impactful as its narrative. The illustrations in Timmy the Martian are noteworthy for their vibrancy and detail. Full-page spreads bring the story to life with vivid colors and imaginative depictions of both Earth and space. These illustrations are not just complementary to the story but are integral in drawing children into Timmy’s world, enhancing their reading experience.

W.B. Thompson’s Timmy the Martian is more than just a story; it’s a resource that can help children understand and embrace diversity. Its captivating illustrations and meaningful narrative make it a valuable addition to any young reader’s library. I find Timmy the Martian to be a delightful and educational read and one that I confidently recommend to both parents and teachers alike.

Growing Up, Rocky

The experiences we have during our formative years have a profound impact on our lives and shape us into the adults we become. For Patty Beecham, a unique childhood and being the youngest of five siblings led to a journey that was not always smooth but ultimately instilled in her a deep sense of reflection and appreciation for her unusual circumstances. In her emotionally-resonant memoir, Growing Up, Rocky, Beecham takes readers on a fascinating journey through her childhood as the daughter of a missionary family living in rural Australia.

From her father’s transition from missionary to priest to unexpected tragedies that shook her family, Beecham’s life was defined by tumultuous waves that shaped her character and relationships with her parents. Despite knowing her path in life, Beecham found herself yearning for more from an early age, driven by an unfulfilling educational experience.

Growing Up, Rocky offers a captivating glimpse into a time, place, and situation that most people will never experience. One theme that recurs throughout the book is the complex relationship between Patty and her mother, which is beautifully described in a relatable and human way. The book’s relatability is one thing that I truly enjoyed about this memoir as it showed how connected we all are despite our differences. I enjoyed the vivid descriptions of Australia as well, from the cities to the family’s home and yard. The narrative reads more like a personal reflection than a cohesive story, but the constant internal struggle of self kept me engaged, hoping to see the little girl find her way.

Growing Up, Rocky exemplifies the idea that life is about the journey, not the destination, and is recommended for anyone who appreciates a unique perspective on life.
