I stumbled on to the world of Rabbits quite by accident a few years ago and was excited to devour The Quiet Room by Terry Miles, the second novel in the Rabbits series. This science fiction thriller grabbed me from page one and held me to the end. I cannot wait for the next one!

The lore and legends around the underground game known as Rabbits gain new dimensions in this twisty tale set in the world of the hit Rabbits podcast.

After nearly winning the eleventh iteration of Rabbits, the mysterious alternate reality game so vast it uses the entire world as its canvas, Emily Connors suddenly finds herself trapped in a dimensional stream where the game does not exist. At all. Except . . . why do sinister figures show up to stop her every time she goes looking? Does Rabbits truly not exist, or is it being hidden? And if it’s being hidden, why—and by whom?

Meanwhile, architect and theme park designer Rowan Chess is having the weirdest month of his life, full of odd coincidences and people who appear one moment and vanish the next, with no trace they ever even existed. The game that is hiding from Emily seems to have found Rowan—with a vengeance.

But only when Rowan and Emily meet do things start to get dangerous, for together they uncover a conspiracy far deeper and deadlier than either of them expected—one that could forever change the nature not only of the game, but of reality itself.

The Quiet Room picks up shortly after the ending of Rabbits, book one. While Miles does a stellar job of bringing new readers up to speed, I recommend starting with book one. This one fed my inner nerd and Dungeons and Dragons’ child.

Emily Cooper, who played the game Rabbits in the previous book, seems to have shifted into a corner of the multiverse where Rabbits is hiding. Rabbits is an underground game where players race to win by finding patterns.

It’s an average work day. You’ve been wrapped up in a task, and you check the clock when you come up for air—4:44 pm. You go to check your email, and 44 unread messages have built up. With a shock, you realize it is April 4th—4/4. And when you get in your car to drive home, your odometer reads 44,444. Coincidence? Or have you just seen the edge of a rabbit hole?

The game can be deadly. There can be unexpected consequences that affect our dimensions and others. Yep, lots of wibbly wobbly timey-wimey stuff. As a die-hard Doctor Who fan, I devoured the concept of Rabbits. This time, the reader will question whether they are playing the game or if the game is playing them. Something is VERY wrong with the game.

Rabbit agents, abductions, and more soon have Emily tracking down a previous winner. Meanwhile, a young architect named Rowan Chess crosses paths with Emily. Rabbits is hiding here, but it seems Chess is playing the game. Only he’s never heard of the Rabbits.

I loved the twists, the unknown factors, and meeting up with others we have previously encountered. This was such a stellar follow up to the first novel. Miles kept it fresh while taking us deeper down the rabbit hole. Perfectly paced with a wonderful buildup to the climactic scene.

The ending brings closers, but teases the readers about what is coming. This reader cannot wait.

Former SEAL Ryan Wolfgang is the head of Arrow Tactical Security. The family of a missing teenager has hired him. They’ve also hired Dr. Alexandria Rolfe, a forensic scientist and psychologist. Has someone kidnapped the girl? Did she runaway? The tale that unfolds balances between the case and the chemistry building between Ryan and Alex.

I enjoy romantic suspense and had a fun time listening to Better to See You. Arrow Tactical Security is a black ops unit that specializes in retrievals. The case was a curious one with lots of twists as the team worked to locate the missing teen and determine motive. It held my attention, as did the interactions between Ryan and Alex.

Both Ryan and Alex are professionals and skirt around the attraction as the chemistry builds. I liked them both and enjoyed listening to their romance unfold. Danger added to the mix, keeping me listening.

Dane Anderson and Chloe Lynn successfully portrayed the hero and heroines’ personalities and emotions. They enhanced the overall story and I recommend listening.

Fans of special ops, romantic suspense and steamy romances will want to check out Better to See You.

Cold Curses by Chloe Neill

While each book in the series offers a complete tale, I recommend reading the series in order for the overall series arc and relationships.

Neill delivered another action-packed story as Windy City faces a supernatural onslaught. With the wards offline, it takes everyone working together to stop demons from taking over the city, Elisa Sullivan and her allies call home.

I love this series about the young Chicagoland sups, especially Elisa Sullivan and her alpha wolf boyfriend, Connor Keene. Poor Connor is being kept busy with challenges from other shifters over his leadership of the Apex. For those new to the author, this series is a spinoff of her award-winning Chicagoland series.

Demons have settled in and monsters are infiltrating the city as rival demons fight for control. Some work to repair the wards as Elisa and her team battle demons, trolls and deal with demon cleanup. Elisa will go to any length, including throttling the demon, to save her best friend caught in the crossfire. I loved the side threads, and the big villain reveal.

With twists, quiet moments with our couple, and trouble at every turn, Neill kept me reading well past my bedtime. The series wrapped up nicely, leaving me content. I do hope she’ll self-publish a novella here or there to allow us a change to revisit these characters.

Fans of paranormal romance, urban fantasy and kick-ass heroines will want to devour the Chicagoland Heirs series now that it’s complete.

The Miracle That Made Us A United Nation

Book Review

Betty Lou Rogers’ book, The Miracle That Made Us A United Nation, offers a concise and captivating exploration of the events that paved the way for the American Revolution and the establishment of the United States as a sovereign nation. Within its pages, the narrative vividly portrays the arduous and, at times, tumultuous proceedings of the Constitutional Convention, shedding light on the complex negotiations that shaped the nation’s founding document. Moreover, the book astutely recognizes the profound influence of Christian principles and values on the ethos and mindset of early American settlers and leaders. Indeed, Christian beliefs played a significant role in shaping society’s moral and ethical underpinnings during the Constitutional Convention.

This straightforward work of historical non-fiction chronicles the transformation of disparate American states into a united entity. It introduces us to iconic figures such as George Washington, Ben Franklin, James Madison, and Alexander Hamilton, offering insights into their pivotal roles in the unification of America. These visionary leaders collaborated to design the framework of governance, addressing critical issues such as the structure of the House and Senate, the imperative for checks and balances, and the creation of the Bill of Rights. The framers of the Constitution were resolute in ensuring that no single individual could unilaterally dictate laws for the entire nation. Consequently, this endeavor led to the establishment of the presidency and the bedrock principles of democracy in the developing United States, alongside the inception of the Judicial Branch as one of the three branches of government.

The Miracle That Made Us A United Nation serves as a reminder of the tenacity that fueled the birth of the United States and the unforgettable legacy left by those who championed its cause. This invaluable resource caters to both history aficionados and those seeking a foundational understanding of America’s struggle for freedom. It illuminates the remarkable journey of a disparate collection of states evolving into a united and enduring nation.

Owning Your Destiny by Duncan McLauren is an honest recollection of the author’s journey to recenter her life after her divorce. How a chance meeting with Silas, a psychic advisor, leads her to harness her power to create a new beginning she desires.

The book offers practical tips on techniques to help achieve personal growth in your own life, looking at simple meditation practices, gratitude and dream journaling, and creative visualization. Readers see the author learn to shed their own feelings of self-doubt and limiting beliefs and open herself up to new possibilities and a more positive life outlook.

Owning Your Destiny finishes with a well-thought-out 25-day plan you can use to reboot your own life through simple but effective exercises. I enjoyed this book and appreciated Duncan McLauren’s straightforward and encouraging writing style and easy-to-implement tips.

It’s well-written and straightforward to digest. The overall message of the book is both joyful and heartfelt. I enjoyed the fact that as we followed the author’s path, it was like having a new friend joining you along your journey.

I found the exercises on creative visualization and vision boards particularly valuable. Tangling with Tyrants: Managing the Balance of Power at Work

The dynamics of any workplace largely hinge on its leadership. Recognizing the pressing issue of challenging bosses, often termed ‘Tyrants,’ this business genre book dives deep into their negative repercussions, including increased stress and a dip in overall productivity. Tangling with Tyrants doesn’t just spotlight the problem; it underscores the emotional toll taken on employees and the subsequent decline in job satisfaction.

From the start, Tony Deblauwe captivates readers with a relatable, emotion-driven statement. He establishes an engrossing narrative by weaving in personal experiences, relevant data, pop culture references, and decisive calls to action. One of the standout features is a self-assessment quiz, enabling readers to gauge whether they’re under the shadow of a Tyrant boss. The results? Categorized insights into boss behaviors. Through anecdotes and firsthand accounts of confronting challenging bosses, Deblauwe underscores the ripple effects of detrimental leadership on organizational success and staff retention.

The narrative style in Tangling with Tyrants seamlessly bridges the gap between an educational guide and a motivational handbook. Deblauwe’s relatable tone and real-world scenarios instantly resonate with readers. He uses lucid language to ensure the material is digestible for a broad audience. The infusion of facts and figures further bolsters his claims, lending credibility to the narrative. Above all, his motivational undertone is hard to miss, pushing readers to recalibrate their strategies in handling challenging bosses.

Tangling with Tyrants is a lifeline for those navigating the stormy seas of complex management. Beyond the confines of a workplace, it provides insights for improved interpersonal communication, whether you’re an aspiring leader wanting to refine your skills or an employee striving for a harmonious work environment. The book’s actionable strategies even extend to handling overbearing personalities in one’s social circle. This resourceful guide merits a strong recommendation for transforming workspaces while maintaining brevity and clarity.
