I read the last three books of this series, almost back to back, and loved immersing myself in this fantasy world. In this the last book, Irene is thrust into danger when the Library tasks her with bringing down Alberich off-books. According to them, she has gone rogue. Danger, betrayal and untold stories await you in this action-packed adventure that will ultimately take us into the heart of the library.

Outside forces from older dragon brothers to someone trying to stop Irene from learning the origins of the library kept Irene, Kai, and Vale on their toes. The story was fascinating and Cogman did a wonderful job of closing threads. I loved the untold stories and different ways that it was told. The trip to the library’s heart was well done, and I could see it all unfolding.

I loved the relationship growth we witnessed between Kai and Irene. Vale and Kathryn were great help and loyal friends. We gain help from a familiar fae and travel to several alternate universes.

Because of the overall story arc and character development, I recommend reading this series in the order of its release. While each book contains a case, we gain knowledge that brought all the books together.

While things wrapped up, Cogman left the door open for more adventures and I am ready to travel back to the library but also excited to see what she brings us next.

Lethal Connections

Lance Knight, a homicide detective in New Orleans, has his work cut out for him when bodies begin to stack up. He teams up with Gina, an intelligent coroner who doesn’t give up so easily to solve a challenging case. Thomas Wilcox, a man who was dumped in the swamp with a distinct mark on his body, is just one of many that end up dead. Are these deaths connected? Is there a serial killer on the loose? As the investigation deepens, Lance soon becomes a target. Unsure of whom to believe, he knows one thing, he must find the killer before they find him.

The story immediately opens with drama and suspense, and I was instantly hooked. The authors provide readers with a captivating narrative that will keep them on the edge of their seats. Lance is passionate about his work, and that takes precedence over anything in his life. Gina is the coroner who is methodical, intelligent, and also passionate about her work. I enjoyed that the authors kept the storyline moving while providing short backstories on the characters introduced in the stories. This helped the story to move along while also giving the reader a sense of each character’s motivations. Authors Erik Daniel Shein, Melissa Davis, and Karen Fuller have combined their writing skills and creativity to create a thrilling story with likable characters. The details of the dead bodies may be a turn-off to some, but I found it intriguing. The twist at the end threw me for a loop and was the icing on the cake for this book.

I highly recommend this gripping read to fans of thrillers and crime fiction. It is the perfect read for suspense lovers with strong and intelligent characters. Lethal Connections is an engaging and page-turning novel that will not disappoint.

Pebbles and the Biggest Number

A curious butterfly loves to count; his name is Pebbles. One day he grew tired of counting the same flowers in his yard and decided to fly off on an adventure to find bigger numbers to count. On Pebble’s journey, he visits the desert, a tropical rainforest, the beach, and a snowy mountain. He even gets to visit an observatory and see into the sky. At each stop on his adventure, he learns a bigger number than before and some exciting new facts about the new places he visits.

Pebbles and the Biggest Number, written by Joey Benun and illustrated by Laura Watson, is a fantastic picture book that packs a lot of information into a few pages. This children’s book could easily be used to teach multiple STEM units with all the science and math facts that are included on each page. In addition, each page has full-color illustrations with exquisite details, making it a delight to look through the artwork alone. I love how the book is laid out, with the story written on the pages in its own area, and then things like “Number Note” and “Did You Know?” In addition, “Science Spot” and “”Fun Facts” are included in a separate illustrative element so as not to be confused with part of Pebbles’ story.

Children, teachers, and families will love reading Pebbles and the Biggest Number together. This children’s book will provide many opportunities for learning and discussions about numbers, animals, and environments. This is a must-have for home and classroom libraries.

Claire McKenzie is an intrepid news reporter on a mission to make her city aware of the ‘Smiley Face Murderer,’ unaware that she might be the target herself. The clock is ticking, and the body count is rising; Detective Lance Harris leads an intense investigation to catch the murderer, all while trying to save the woman he loves from becoming the next victim. A thrilling story of life and death saved by love. Beyond the Shadows by DeAnn Daley Holcomb is a murder mystery novel that takes the reader on a journey of twists and turns as the detective tries to uncover the killer’s identity before they strike again.

One of the strengths of the book is the well-narrated and suspenseful plot. The author does an excellent job of building tension and keeping the reader engaged. The characterization is also well-done, with fully-realized and multi-dimensional characters that are easy to connect with and root for. The setting of the book is another strong point. A Murder in Ashwood

Book Review

A Murder in Ashwood by Robert Brighton is the ultimate turn-of-the-century murder mystery. When Mrs. Stoddard’s husband is found brutally killed in their home, everything turns upside down; as the coroner removes the body, an autopsy is conducted, and an investigation is initiated. The story quickly becomes an intriguing mystery about Mr. Stoddard’s murder, with everyone a potential suspect, leading to a compelling case.

From the beginning, the reader plunges into the heart of the action in this enthralling historical mystery novel, with strong, well-developed characters and raw, emotional dialogue. The author is descriptive, unveiling each scene and event so that readers can see it clearly in their minds, noting any possible clues that may be revealed. I enjoyed the details of each development throughout the book, from the family’s complicated relationship with each other to the funeral arrangements and suddenly becoming the center of media attention.

The author brings a unique writing style and characters to the traditional murder-mystery genre with page-turning excitement and the determination of Sarah of the Avenging Angel Detective Agency to solve the case. I enjoyed the modern twist of a woman detective and the blunt, strong language expressed by key players in the story. The narration style and lively characters piqued my interest in the book, and after completing the story, they exceeded my expectations.

A Murder in Ashwood by Robert Brighton is an entertaining, gritty, and exciting read that captivated me. I recommend this spectacular book for its original style and intriguing characters, which kept me reading from one chapter to the next. The story felt realistically portrayed as if I was reading a true crime novel set in the first years of the twentieth century. It’s an excellent read for fans of murder mysteries and suspense.
