According to his mother, as Roland Penrose and John Richardson both recount in their biographies, Picasso could draw before he could speak. “The first sound that he made was ‘piz, piz…’—baby language for lapiz, i.e., pencil,” Richardson writes. “When given a pencil, the infant would apparently draw spirals that represented a snail-shaped fritter called a […]

A Hard Day for a Hangover by Darynda Jones

A Hard Day for a Hangover by Darynda Jones is the third novel and conclusion of the Sunshine Vicram trilogy. Romance, humor, suspense and a mystery await you. It was bittersweet and even though I pine for more, Jones delivered a blockbuster conclusion with plenty of fireworks.

Some people greet the day with open arms. Sheriff Sunshine Vicram would rather give it a hearty shove and get back into bed, because there’s just too much going on right now. There’s a series of women going missing, and Sunny feels powerless to stop it. There’s her persistent and awesomely-rebellious daughter Auri, who’s out to singlehandedly become Del Sol’s youngest and fiercest investigator. And then there’s drama with Levi Ravinder―the guy she’s loved and lusted after for years. The guy who might just be her one and only. The guy who comes from a family of disingenuous vipers looking to oust him―and Sunshine―for good.

Like we said, the new day can take a hike.

The blockbuster conclusion to the bestselling Sunshine Vicram trilogy, A Hard Day for a Hangover will have readers laughing and cheering to the very last page.

The Sunshine Vicram trilogy was a blast from beginning to end. I am so sad to see it end. I loved getting to know Sunshine, her daughter, and Levi Ravinder. Secondary characters from her parents to townsfolk rounded out this trilogy and made me feel a part of the small town whose body count is a tad higher than one would prefer… LOL

Sunshine has her hands full. She is dealing with an unconscious girl, theft and an escaped prisoner. Not to mention worrying about Levi killing his uncle. Then there is the romance and telling Auri about her birth and father. Eep!

The perfectly paced suspense/mystery thread with plenty of twists as even Auri finds herself in the crosshairs of a shooter is perfectly paired with the family drama, side stores and swoony second chance romance.

While each book has a case to solve, I recommend reading/listening to the trilogy in the order of its release. The overall story arc, relationships and small-town antics will be lost reading out of order. Don’t cheat yourself. On the plus side, if you haven’t started, you are in for a treat and can binge from beginning to end.

Jones makes you want to pack up and move to Arizona. She’ll have you joining the local sheriff’s office despite the raccoons. I am hoping we revisit and get Auri and Quincy’s story one day. That girl is going places if she doesn’t give her family a heart attack first!

A wonderful, satisfying conclusion that closed threads and left me smiling. The possibility for more stories is there, and I’d be first in line to read them. Perfect for fans of romantic suspense, small-towns, and mysteries.

Climate Change Is REAL!

Martin Sessions Author Interview

The Vanishing Glaciers of Patagonia take readers on an expedition to the glaciers of Patagonia and shares the effect of Climate Change on this landscape. Why was this an important book for you to write?

Following discussions with the Corporación Nacional Forestal’s (CONAF) person in charge of the protected wildlands of the Aysén Province high up on Glacier Benito in 2017, I felt strongly that I should provide the people of Aysén Province of Chile, more information about the history of the exploration of their region from the sea.

Next, I wanted to establish a recent historical timeline for West flowing glaciers in this dynamic region for a further research paper.

Finally, I needed to obtain stories of explorers so that the many untitled photographs that I had found could be identified and labelled. With all this information, an excellent story emerged of a remote place.

Did you find anything in your research of this book that surprised you?

Finding and reading Commander Pringle Stokes (Captain of HMS Beagle in 1828) last journal in the Mitchell Library of New South Wales, Australia was extremely emotional. Here, there was a description of a place I had spent several months in 1972/73 and visited again in 2007, 2011 and 2017.

Viewing the original 1830 Royal Navy chart of the relevant Patagonian coastline was equally exciting as it showed clearly the two prominent glaciers and the associated icefield (for the first time).

Being able to link the grandchildren of the 1920/21 explorers to this part of their grandfathers lives was most rewarding.

Finally finding a photograph from 1920/21 of the edge of the great Glacier San Quintin that showed fresh ‘clean’ rocks intermingling with moss covered rocks which demonstrated that this glacier was experiencing a surge in 1920.

What were some ideas that were important for you to share in this book?

The most important idea to share is that these significant glaciers are thinning fast.

Another idea to share is that we must revisit the stories, photographs and documents from previous explorers to remote areas and revisit their locations to document the changes to our world.

What do you hope is one thing readers take away from your story?

Climate change is REAL!

In 1921, two Swedes, Nils Pallin and Allan Bäckman, described their incredible challenges and tribulations as the first explorers of the largest and grandest glacier flowing from Chile’s stunning North Patagonian Icefield. Sited in a wild, stormy and inhospitable land, the kilometres wide ice flows through ancient, almost impassable forests to sea level! Bringing their stories together with many recently discovered photographs, Martin Sessions reveals what happened before and since, especially the effect of Climate Change on this amazing, rarely explored landscape.

About theAuthor / compiler:
Martin Sessions, as a 24 year old Royal Navy Engineer Officer, spent five months in 1972/73, monitoring a west flowing North Patagonian Icefield glacier, one of the tasks of an 11 man British expedition. He next flew over the region in 2006 and was struck by the catastrophic changes. Returning again in 2007, 2011 and 2017, he led expeditions to measure the rapid surface lowering of the study glacier. As a result, he became familiar with the terrain traversed by Nils Pallin and Allan Bäckman and was able to ‘place’ their many uncaptioned photographs.

Shadows Of The Acropolis

Shadow of the Acropolis, by Richard Lyons, is the second volume of the series “DNA of democracy” and focuses on subjects such as equality, independence, and American history. He focuses on the most important political figures and acts, going from the acropolis to the evolution of society and how our government has failed to sustain liberty ideals. The difference between what should be and what happens in society is quite unsettling, and the aim of the book is to reflect on how things went and how they are going, thinking about what will happen in the future.

Lyons writes in a straightforward way, starting from Greek society and slowly getting to today’s situation. He analyses each society’s characteristics in a trip through the world and through different eras.

As a reader keen on details, I appreciated the presence of the illustrations, which might look funny or cute at first but gain importance as one reads the book. They are all satirical images, and their symbolism grows as the chapters continue. For example, in the author’s opinion, the octopus representing the administrative state might look cute at first but then seems increasingly corrupted and wicked, just like society’s evolution.

Furthermore, the author addresses the reader directly, asking questions and trying to get the latter to stay active while reading. Finally, the use of illustrations helps readers grasp the concepts and splits the book into three parts, focusing on three different aspects.

Shadow of the Acropolis, by Richard Lyons is an eye-opening look at the historical background of what Lyons calls a “hybrid nation,” which will catch most readers’ attention. This book is insightful for those who are keen on history and politics. I would like to end this review with a quote from the author: “- The State seeks to amputate the DNA contained in our history, in our founding ethos and separate us from the heroes who made America a free and independent democracy devoted to the rights of humanity.”

Son of Man becomes Son of God

Son of Man becomes Son of God by Trinity Royal is a 10-chapter spiritual book that offers profound insights into the dynamics of the spiritual realms of Earth and heaven. The rendition of the temptation of Jesus Christ on Mount Hermon, the book’s primary focus, raises the veil beyond what transpired at the event. Instead, it illuminates the battle between God and Satan for possessing human souls.

With that backdrop, Trinity Royal raises essential questions about the cosmic significance of humans on Earth and, in the bigger picture, why our souls are constantly battled for by the devil. This engaging book explored Jesus’s mission as an emissary of Light on Earth and why the devil sought to tempt Jesus in one of His most vulnerable states.

Readers will begin to ask critical questions about their faith when reading this book. What does all this have to do with a believer today? What can they do? How are they supposed to navigate this new knowledge?

As readers delve deeper into the repository of new information they are sure to gain from this book, they will find a part that addresses a concern faced by many Christians who wish to directly communicate with God. How do they know what is of God and what is mere hallucinations? With the grave implication that comes with yielding to temptation, how do you know your tempestuous moments are real and not fragments of your imagination? Trinity Royal sampled a few answers to these while emphasizing the importance of preparation and how to prepare to circumvent all such situations.

The graphic details of this book, Son of Man Becomes Son of God, with scriptural backing for all theories posited, offer a delicate balance between science, theology, and Bible scriptures. While it has the potential to make you tremble at what could have been had Jesus Christ fallen to the temptations of Satan, it gives hope for the salvation of the human soul and equips you with the best tool for rebuking Satan and his demons.

Son of Man Becomes Son of God is a fascinating look at scripture and offers readers a unique perspective on the interpretations of the Bible. Focusing on questions that are rarely asked, readers will be enlightened on the deeper and more profound meanings behind the temptation on Mount Hermon. This thought-provoking book would be a good resource for those interested in theology and Bible studies.

The Dead Superstar Bar

The story takes place in a neighborhood bar in Sarasota, The Dead Superstar Bar, a bar like no other. The place definitely lives up to its name, with dead superstars like George Harrison coming to perform nightly. Founded and established by Harvey Dowd with the help of his friend Conor, it’s a one-of-a-kind bar that features only music produced in the 1960s by dead musicians. What begins as a fantastic tale with a hint of nostalgia slowly becomes a mystery when none of the characters know how the bar came to be in the first place. This book shares so much trivia, and details about each musical band introduced to the audience during the daily night performances that it reads nothing short of an encyclopedia on music history.

The Dead Superstars Bar is an entertaining story packed with information and tidbits of music history in the form of a paranormal mystery novel. Although the author has undoubtedly done a respectable amount of research to compile such an enormous quantity of trivia and facts about each band or musician before introducing them to the stage in the bar, it can feel a bit like a music history lesson. However, for those who love reading about the strange facets of the life of a superstar, it is bound to be fantastic entertainment.

What is interesting to note is the odd anecdote behind the protagonist’s name, Harvey, as being given after the name of the six feet three-inch pooka that features in the 1950 movie of the same name. In terms of nostalgia for a time that has passed us by and for the once famous celebrities we have almost forgotten now, this story seems to bring them to our memory and help us reminisce about them, almost like the peculiar silent character of Elwood in the film. Overall, it invites us to take a pleasant journey into the 60s world of music.

The Dead Superstars Bar is a captivating contemporary fantasy novel with metaphysical characters that give the story its unique draw and mystery. Like the music of the 60s, this novel will remain with readers, make them smile, and make them wonder just what could happen next.

Fan Mail

The family of Jeremy, his wife, and his 7 sons is threatened to break apart when fan mail drops in the mailbox. Two of the brothers are a part of a band called ‘bits and pieces.’ They receive threats through fan mail asking them to leave the band. The web of secrets is unraveled when Jeremy discovers perilous truths about his 5 adopted sons. Brian, one of the adopted sons, revisits the time the boys experienced an explosion before, linking it to the crisis faced by the family now. Is someone on a quest to destroy the family, a family bonded not only by blood but also by love?

Fan Mail by Joseph Lewis is a story of modern-age love, revenge, and everything in between. The author takes you on a rollercoaster ride of emotions throughout the book. Though packed with details and subsequent events, the distinct, descriptive writing style kept me interested. The technical aspect of writing was well-researched and accurate. Short-length chapters and simple language helped in the readability of the novel. The suspense drama keeps building up while providing some space for comfort scenes. It made the storyline candid and meaningful.

The involvement of a wide age range of the main characters in a situation adds to the realism of the setting. Enumerable characters added diversity in characterization but also complicated the central thread of the plotline. The focus on multiple characters takes away the attention from the actual events on the timeline.

Fan Mail is a thrilling and suspenseful family mystery novel. The themes of sexuality, adoption, and parenthood are well-woven with the edgy nature of the narration. The author successfully manages to make fiction feel real. The ending will fill you with the sweet and sour taste of walking with an extraordinary family throughout their journey. It is a page-turning mystery touching different parts of your heart at each turn.
