‘Sound Is In My Hands’

The 1960s and 1970s were a rich time for the Western musical avant-garde. By midcentury, conventions of melody, harmony, and rhythm had already been challenged by innovations like Arnold Schoenberg’s twelve-tone technique, which had effectively done away with the dominant-tonic relationship—the interplay of consonance and dissonance which creates a feeling of relaxation of tension at […]

It’s a nice day for a white wedding…if I can make it down the aisle unscathed and still breathing, that is!

’Tis I, newly restored witch and armchair sleuth Stevie Cartwright, and I’m finally about to marry Win, my soul mate/ex-spy turned groom-zilla. We’ve gone to hell and back (and a few planes of existence) for our happily ever after, and nothing’s going to get in the way of our union…except possibly a murder while auditioning musical options for the reception.

The blessed event is just days away, but Win and I can’t resist a good mystery, so in between last-minute wedding decisions, the early arrival of my high-maintenance parents, my klutzy mishaps, and an ill-timed visit from the ghost of my long-forgotten ex-fiancé, we’re tracking a killer in Ebenezer Falls’ latest whodunit.

Time to multitask like a champ and get me to the church…er, backyard…on time.

Piece of cake, right?

While Cassidy does a great job of bringing the listener up to speed, I recommend listening to the series in the order of its release. It has a great story arc, relationship development as Stevie & Win built a motley crew of friends, pets, and allies.

This tale delivered plenty of white-knuckle suspense and plot twists. It also delivered plenty of laughs, as we have groom-zilla instead of bride-zilla. Win just wanted everything to be perfect for their special day. The murder mystery was a good one and had the bonus of a ghost from Stevie’s past.

Of course we had shenanigans, and Stevie kept having accidents. It’s also a full house with her parents and sister. I am not sure if this is the last story in the series, but wrapped up just right.

Fans of paranormal, cozy mysteries with romance, ghosts and familiars will enjoy this witchy tale.

The Habits of Consistency Perseverance

In The Habits of Consistency, Perseverance, and Appreciation, author John D. Cadore presents a compelling exploration of the formation of beneficial habits and the avoidance of harmful ones. Drawing from his personal journey to becoming an attorney, Cadore highlights the transformative power of consistency in both personal and professional realms. The narrative is enriched with personal anecdotes, making the book relatable and engaging. Cadore delves into a variety of virtues, including decisiveness, appreciation, and a positive attitude, and discusses how these can profoundly impact one’s life. He thoughtfully integrates biblical quotations and reflections on societal issues, providing a multifaceted approach to establishing ethical foundations. This exploration ranges from the consequences of neglecting education to the pitfalls of drug use, offering a comprehensive look at the impact of individual choices on both personal life and the broader society.

The author’s straightforward writing style ensures that the book’s key messages are conveyed efficiently and memorably. For instance, Cadore’s observation, “Remember that life is not a zero-sum game. Someone does not have to lose for another to win,” is both impactful and easy to recall. One of the book’s strengths lies in its integration of biblical wisdom with practical life lessons. Cadore’s strategic use of Bible verses, such as Proverbs 10:4, in a discussion on procrastination, provides a deeper, spiritually-infused perspective that enhances the reader’s understanding. I found the book particularly enlightening, especially in its reframing of adversity as a tool for personal growth and resilience. Despite its brevity, the book is rich with wisdom and insights that align with pursuing fulfilling and disciplined life goals.

The Habits of Consistency, Perseverance, and Appreciation is recommended for those seeking practical advice enriched with biblical guidance. It offers a roadmap to a more disciplined, meaningful life, resonating with readers from diverse backgrounds who are on the journey to realizing their dreams.

When I Was A Boy: A Personal History

Jerry Thomas Caplinger’s memoir, When I Was a Boy: A Personal History, offers a vivid and introspective journey through his upbringing in 1940s Hope, Arkansas. Born to a blue-collar family, Caplinger navigates a life marked by stark contrasts. He finds solace in the wild beauty of southwestern Arkansas yet grapples with a tumultuous home life characterized by poverty and a harsh, sometimes cruel, father.

Caplinger’s narrative skillfully interweaves his personal struggles with the broader Southern Gothic tradition, reminiscent of the works of William Faulkner and Cormac McCarthy. His writing style, predominantly spare and forthright, particularly when addressing his family’s hardships, occasionally shifts to a more expressive tone. This change is most notable when he recounts the pastoral landscapes of his youth, offering a poignant counterpoint to the daunting tales of his father. The complex relationship between Caplinger and his father is a central theme of the memoir, drawing parallels to other literary figures with difficult parental relationships, like the alcoholic father in “Angela’s Ashes.” Caplinger’s conflicted emotions—simultaneously seeking his father’s love and acceptance while harboring deep-seated resentment—add depth to the narrative. Caplinger’s ability to evoke such detailed and vivid recollections from his early life is remarkable, providing readers with a window into the world of a man shaped by humble beginnings and challenging circumstances.

When I Was a Boy: A Personal History is a memoir that tells the story of Caplinger’s life, but it’s much more than that. It’s a powerful testament to the resilience of the human spirit, and an exploration of the ways in which we can find strength and meaning in the face of adversity. This is a deeply personal and moving work that speaks to the universal struggles we all face and reminds us that even in our darkest moments, there is always hope for a brighter future.
