Fascism’s Poster Girl

Italy’s prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, came to power in the parliamentary elections of September 2022 through the coalition of her right-wing party, the Brothers of Italy, with Matteo Salvini’s far-right Lega and Silvio Berlusconi’s center-right Forza Italia. Although the Italian far right has always disavowed its links to Fascism, Meloni began her career in the […]

Reckoning with a Troubled Past

Trent, in northern Italy, and Sandomierz, in eastern Poland, are hundreds of miles apart but share a ghastly connection: both were sites of anti-Jewish libels hundreds of years ago. In 1475 in Trent and in 1698 and 1710 in Sandomierz, Jews were falsely accused of killing Christian children. Both towns have remnants of these hideous […]

Trees in Themselves

In the past, when a candidate for the title of the world’s oldest tree was discovered in the United States, many predictable things tended to happen, varying slightly by historical era. The tree was usually found on land that had been given away or sold cheap by the federal government—and then had to be repurchased […]

Enforcing Apartheid in the West Bank

Armed Jewish vigilantes going house to house, knocking down doors, blasting through windows, shooting, and setting entrances and exits on fire; terrorized residents gathering children and the elderly and hiding them in bedrooms, or rushing them out to the street despite the unknown dangers there, or climbing onto rooftops to hide behind water tanks; men […]

Lost in the Moment and Found by Seanan McGuire

Lost in the Moment and Found by Seanan McGuire is the eighth novella in the Wayward Children series narrated by Jesse Villnsky. I love this series about children & doors and the places they take them. I devoured this in a single sitting and it was my favorite of them all. Antsy walks through a door and I was lost….

A young girl discovers an infinite variety of worlds in this standalone tale in the Hugo and Nebula Award-wining Wayward Children series from Seanan McGuire, Lost in the Moment and Found.

Welcome to the Shop Where the Lost Things Go.

If you ever lost a sock, you’ll find it here.

If you ever wondered about favorite toy from childhood… it’s probably sitting on a shelf in the back.

And the headphones that you swore this time you’d keep safe? You guessed it….

Antoinette has lost her father. Metaphorically. He’s not in the shop, and she’ll never see him again. But when Antsy finds herself lost (literally, this time), she discovers that however many doors open for her, leaving the Shop for good might not be as simple as it sounds.

And stepping through those doors exacts a price.

Lost in the Moment and Found tells us that childhood and innocence, once lost, can never be found.

The author begins with a note of reassurance, and I was very appreciative. Despite it, all those insecure feelings came rushing back, but that is another story. The backstory to six-year-old Antsy packing her things late in the evening to runaway to grandma’s house was well done. The door she finds and how she walks through was different, but then so was the place that she arrives in.

She finds herself in a shop for lost and found things. Tupperware lids, missing kittens, and that left sock all can be found here. If you truly desire to find them. People arrive looking for things and return to the place they came from once found. Except for those who stay in the lost and found. They are provided for. But can they leave? It’s exciting at first, with doors to travel, needs met, and friends to be made. But it’s not a perfect place and staying comes at a cost.

The tale was clever, and we witnessed Ansty change. The tale shows that innocence lost can never be found. I felt for Ansty and experienced several emotions through the course of this story. I kept listening as I was concerned about the eventual outcome. The author left us in a good place and I should have trusted her.

Magic, unique creatures, and magic rooms await you at the shop. While it isn’t necessary to read the previous novellas, I recommend reading or listening to all the Wayward Children stories.

About Seanan McGuire

Seanan McGuire

Seanan McGuire is a native Californian, which has resulted in her being exceedingly laid-back about venomous wildlife, and terrified of weather. When not writing urban fantasy (as herself) and science fiction thrillers (as Mira Grant), she likes to watch way too many horror movies, wander around in swamps, record albums of original music, and harass her cats. Seanan is the author of the October Daye, InCryptid, and Indexing series of urban fantasies; the Newsflesh trilogy; the Parasitology duology; and the “Velveteen vs.” superhero shorts. Her cats, Lilly, Alice, and Thomas, are plotting world domination even as we speak, but are easily distracted by feathers on sticks, so mankind is probably safe. For now.

The Eloquence of Effort

The Eloquence of Effort: Beware the Path of Least Resistance by Indar Maharaj is a highly intellectual read, perfect for readers who enjoy deeply complex pieces that feed the mind. The intention is to assist in acknowledging the necessity of prioritizing ‘purposeful effort’, to view it as the source of healing, achievement, and long-term well-being for all.

Maharaj uses the lives of successful individuals, particularly their methods of work and the morals and values they lived by to show how a person’s overall nature is a direct influence on their accomplishments during their lifetime. By also including figures such as Robert ‘Iceberg Slim’ Beck, Bruce Reynolds, and Bernard Madoff who were known for their poor behavior and dark leadership styles (those venturing to criminal or anti-social behaviors), Maharaj has created a trustworthy judgment between praising certain figures, whilst ostracizing the lives of others. It is done so intentionally without force or haste, but so evidently it cannot be argued.

The use of figures such as Gandhi, Mother Teresa, and Albert Schweitzer was a brilliant cipher for how the willingness to forego personal pleasures in lieu of the greater good – through healthcare, socio-political movements, and the environment – can manifest differently, but are all factors which have been possessed commonly by world leaders because they sought to serve selflessly. The three felt a supreme calling to identify with the needs of their fellow man. Maharaj’s analysis of these figures independently followed by a dual and triple comparative analysis marks a transparent maxim: leaders must be the instruments of change, for service which is rendered without joy helps neither the servant nor the served.

The Eloquence of Effort by Indar Maharaj contains a message for readers that is straightforward: just as work demands effort, effort demands work. This book is for readers wanting an enlightening and thought-provoking read with factual recounts of historical figures and world events, wrapped in a highly intellectual blanket that is done tastefully and tactfully.

Seasons of Life

Whether they are positive or negative, we all have similar stages and relationships in our lives. Throughout this collection of short poems in Seasons of Life, we can see ourselves as a child blowing out a candle on a birthday cake or enjoying a game of America’s favorite pastime: baseball. From playing with dolls to high school graduation, from flying a kite to eating chocolate pudding, someone can relate.

Seasons of Life by Susan McLeod is an inventory of McLeod’s life. She has devoted a poem to each of the seasons, experiences, and family members that she felt was worthy enough of such devotion. The images harken back to a simpler time when families all went to the beach for the summer, to the drive-in movies at night, and to the fair in the fall. Each moment is bathed in a cheery light that makes one smile.

The simplicity of the language within this collection of poems makes it accessible to a broader range of readers. McLeod’s description of her life through poetry will also capture the interest of younger and older readers alike. Younger readers will delight in the simplistic imagery of experiences that they may have had recently gone through themselves. Older readers will look back fondly on milestones in McLeod’s life that may take them back to their childhood.

Seasons of Life, by Susan McLeod, offers readers bite-sized poems that do not intimidate with complex imagery and vocabulary. Readers may pick it up at their leisure, flip to any page, and enjoy a poem in their spare time. I highly recommend this book for anyone willing to reminisce about the “good ol’ days” with nothing but feelings of positivity, unity, and harmony to create a similar mood within the reader.

The Mole Vol V Spare Part

A love so pure that even death can’t pull them apart. A hurting heart, mourning the loss of his beloved. A man who sees the world for what it is. Its imperfections, injustice, and unending struggle for power. In some parts of The Mole Vol V: Spare Part, Ron Raye expresses his devotion and undying love for his lover. Despite the challenges that they may face, he continues to stay true to her. He also writes poems that praise the brave people among us and explains man’s quest for truth and wisdom. And he pinpoints the challenges that we all face in the world, especially the disadvantaged or lower class. He talks about his experiences in different parts of the world over the years, crimes committed in modern society, and the consequences of war.

It was a collection of poems on his views on various aspects of life. Pointing the light on some of the ills of society and subtly proposing solutions. He writes poetry to advocate for a better society in which all men are treated fairly and there is peace. The sad reality is that life isn’t fair and rosy. Things don’t happen as we want them to, and the weak are continuously oppressed. The man keeps seeking the truth and looks for answers to his questions, which he seldom finds. Love is a beautiful thing, but it can cause so much grief, leaving the lover in distress if the love isn’t reciprocated, such as in the case of the author.

Ron Raye creates poems that are just like stories. Each line is a story of its own and will evoke deep emotions in the reader. I had to read some lines twice to better understand the message he was trying to convey. Each line is expertly crafted. Ron Raye continues to show he is a master at poetry with yet another fantastic collection. This would be a great read for fans of modern poetry. The book is enlightening while also being thought-provoking.
