Rome Was His Laboratory

No one in Rome would let Francesco Bianchini punch a hole through their ceiling. Bianchini wanted to measure the size of the solar system, which required the use of a sixteen-foot-long telescope—hence the hole. When he finally found a suitable place to mount his instrument and take measurements, tracking Venus and Saturn across the night […]

Endless Summer

In September 1963 my family moved from Clarion, Iowa, to Osage, Iowa, eighty-two miles away. I was eleven, the oldest of four children. Both towns were roughly the same size—population three thousand or thereabouts—and their residential streets ended abruptly in cornfields. In Clarion, I knew everyone and everything. My friends were Bill and Greg and […]

Throngs of Unseen People

When eleven-year-old Willie Lincoln died of typhoid in the White House in February 1862, his parents were devastated. For weeks President Lincoln held solitary grieving sessions every Thursday, the day of his son’s death. Mary Lincoln swung between agonized sobbing and passive despair. She wore mourning clothes for months, wrote on stationery trimmed in black, […]

Timeless Correspondences

At the end of The Gift, a memoir of H.D.’s American childhood unpublished in her lifetime, she appends a chapter set in the present, London, 1943. An air raid takes her household by surprise, and she describes what it’s like in her fifth-story flat in Lowndes Square with “terrific shattering reverberations of the great guns.” […]

Blog Tour: Grimm Consequences by Kate SeRine

We are joining author Kate SeRine and Kensington Publishing in celebrating the 10-Year Anniversary of the Transplanted Tales. Have you read them? Today I am sharing my original review of Grimm Consequences. This novella takes place after Red and gives us Nate Grimm’s story. You won’t want to miss it… and I am loving the new cover!

Grimm Consequences

Transplanted Tales #1.5

Amazon | iBook | Kobo | B&N | Goodreads

The author of Red “takes urban fantasy, crime thrillers and fairy tale characters and creates magic” in this paranormal romance novella (Caffeinated Book Reviewer).

To put it lightly, Nate Grimm has a dark past. Fortunately, no one’s bothered to look too closely at the Fairytale Management Authority’s lead detective and part-time Reaper. And Nate wants to keep it that way. After centuries of torment and loneliness, he’s finally found happiness with the hot and hard-charging love of his life, Tess “Red” Little.

Of course, his love for Tess is the reason there’s a posse of Reaper judges after him, led by a sadistic bastard acquainted with Nate from once upon a time. Now, Tess will pay the price for Nate’s transgressions unless Nate severs his ties to the transplanted Tales—and Tess—forever. His enemy has the advantage of speed, malice and brutality. But the Reapers have underestimated the depth of Nate’s love. And the fury of his wrath.

Kate Serine’s Transplanted Tales have delighted me, and I was so excited about Nate’s POV in Grimm Consequences. This is a novella that takes place between Red and the Better to See You. It shares the back-story of Nate Grimm, the sexy reaper who won Tess’s heart. Serine brought him to life and made me swoon, shed a tear, and fall deeper in love with this reaper.

Mini-review: Fans of the series will be deeply satisfied with Nate’s tale.

Nate Grimm is the lead detective at the Fairytale Management Authority and a part-time reaper. He is also romantically involved with kick-ass detective Tess “Red” Little. Nate has secrets, and a dark past, and all of it is about to put those he loves in danger. The tale that unfolds is suspenseful, emotionally engaging, and completely swoon-worthy.

Call me crazy, but I love Reapers, and Nate Grimm is a favorite. I imagine him as old-fashioned, sexy, and debonair. In my mind, he resembles Neal Caffrey from the hit television show White Collar. Now imagine tattoos and beautifully defined abs..yep. Swoon-worthy from the way, he walks to his sharp attire and finger worthy hair. From the beginning of the Transplanted Tales series, Nate’s love, respect, and need to protect Tess has been clear. In Grimm Consequences, SeRine reveals just how long Nate has had these feelings. She shares details about his past, and I loved learning how and why he became a reaper.

Grimm Consequences was action-packed, suspenseful and had my heart racing as Nate and Tess’s fate was tested. SeRine gives us characters to loathe and fear, all while exposing Nate, placing Tess in danger and keeping my heart in my throat. It was brilliant and completely satisfying.

If you haven’t tried the Transplanted Tales, yet I urge you to do so. SeRine takes urban fantasy, crime thrillers, and fairy tale characters and creates magic. The tales currently available are Red, Grimm Consequences, The Better to See You, and Along Came a Spider. The fourth book, Ever After, will be released in August 2014. All the books deal with one tale, a case, and their romance.

Toward a Model of Constitutions

Toward a Model of Constitutions by Williams Kuttikadan is a comprehensive yet easy read that breaks down the complex anatomy of constitutions, democratic systems, and how they impact society, human rights, and the expectations of individuals and societies. The author does an excellent job of presenting highly detailed information in a book that is simple to digest and understand.

Kuttikadan breaks down the fundamentals of constitutions with charts, illustrations, and straightforward explanations so that the reader gets a clear and concise version of the constitutional model and its importance in a democratic society. While the fundamentals of democracy are built on individual freedom and liberty, the author draws from history, governance, and corporate influence. The author goes a step further by stressing how vital it is to build a constitution with a solid structure in place so that it can adequately protect individual human rights and liberties while guarding against the attempts of large corporations and businesses to skew these rights in their favor, and above individual rights.

This book covers the foundations of a constitution exceptionally well while discussing the impact of oligarchies and institutions that wear a thin veil of democracy to keep citizens and societies convinced that there are no deficiencies in their human rights. These areas of concern include propaganda, false promises, and a lack of transparency that lead to gaps in equality, even in democratically successful nations. The author is passionate about promoting a more critical analysis of democratic constitutions, which must include constant feedback from the public to remain fully democratic in every sense of this definition.

I rate Toward a Model of Constitutions by Williams Kuttikadan a 5 out of 5 for its well-written portrayal and breakdown of modern constitutions and the importance of maintaining democracy with continuous review and improvements to ensure the complete protection of human rights and liberties. While the book is highly detailed with charts and illustrations, which may take a while to digest, it’s a quality read that’s both through-provoking and educational.

The Bones of Amoret

The Bones of Amoret is a story told from the perspective of an 84-year-old doctor, Noah Grady. As the doctor approaches the final stage of his life, he decides to share a mysterious story from his past with a reporter nearly forty years after its occurrence. Set in 1982, the events took place in the outskirts of the small town of Amoret, Texas, where an outsider, Blaine Beckett, who often isolated himself from society, suddenly disappeared without a trace. Noah Grady, the town’s local doctor, shares his observations about this unusual case and how events unfolded around the man’s vanishing.

As Noah narrates this mystery, he realizes that seemingly from afar, his observations were much closer to him and the local community and that the circumstances surrounding the man’s disappearance are possibly part of a much larger, sinister strategy.

Herbert creates a compelling novel that keeps the reader in constant suspense until the end. The characters are interesting and realistic, with relatable flaws, but still likable. I found the small town setting provided a dark and mysterious backdrop to the story. The author tells the story from the protagonist’s point of view, reeling the reader in to get more involved as the plot progresses. I enjoyed the story’s unexpected twists throughout, which keep you guessing as to who is to be trusted and who is suspect.

The Bones of Amoret is a great page-turner that’s full of unexpected developments and thrilling surprises while maintaining a strong level of suspense that will keep readers engaged. I highly recommend The Bones of Amoret for the author’s brilliant writing style and use of a creative and original plot. This is a worthwhile read for fans of mysteries and psychological thrillers that enjoy a fast-paced story that delivers unpredictable and exciting developments.

The Killer Half

The Killer Half by J.B. Blake is an action-packed thriller that follows Hawk, a soldier, and his return from service in Afghanistan. Hawk served as a well-known and respected “Mr. Fix It” for the army, doing the dirty jobs that others either wouldn’t or couldn’t do. Once Hawk is back home, the familiar surroundings of civilian life feel more foreign than ever. He quickly learns that adjusting to home is more difficult than anticipated, and as Hawk settles back into civilian life, his only companions are his military-trained dogs and arsenal of weapons.

As Hawk adapts to his new life, he unexpectedly discovers a young girl in trouble during a hike in the desert. It is clear that she is about to be assaulted by human traffickers, which Hawk quickly, and skillfully helps the girl break free from, only to discover there is much more lurking beneath the cartel-backed criminals. As Hawk uncovers the onset of a multi-stage invasion orchestrated by the cartel and Muslim extremists, who plan on invading the U.S. with the purpose of trafficking drugs, and people and subjugating its populace to Sharia law.

At first glance, the plot feels outlandish and over-the-top, but it successfully delivers raw, entertaining action from start to finish. Hawk embodies the epitome of action heroes, a one-man army who is good at a lot of things and applies these skills throughout the book. What I enjoyed about this book is how well the author delves into Hawk’s struggles with PTSD and trauma from his time in Afghanistan. Despite Hawk’s trigger reaction to events and his preference to resolve issues with a gun, his character displays some depth and dimension, alongside his battles with villains and developing love interest.

The Killer Half is a thrilling novel for fans of easy-to-read action, with unrelenting plot twists and exciting characters. While the story provides a steady dose of action, the book also explores themes around religion, politics, the American border, and the war in Afghanistan, which may seem divisive or offensive to some readers. The gist of the story is unapologetic, with a poignant view and a strong voice. I recommend The Killer Half for its action-packed and character-driven story.

Barefoot: A Surfer’s View of the Universe

Barefoot: A Surfer’s View of the Universe is a dazzling memoir of the author’s early life, narrated with a sense of adventure and refreshing humility. Pacholyk begins tracing his life through early memories of growing up on the farm in New York state and how his taste for personal development and ambition shaped his growing interests and career choices later in life. The story is centered around the author’s love of surfing and the joy he experiences with the lessons learned from the ocean and this exciting sport.

This extraordinary memoir plays against the scenic backdrop of American cityscapes and beaches, ranging from New York, Los Angeles, and Miami. Pacholyk further broadens his horizons by traveling to Asia and beyond. I thoroughly enjoyed the author’s enthusiasm for travel, surfing, and living life to the fullest.

The author’s story includes a passionate pursuit of a career in dance and many excursions to some of the best surfing locations in the world. I particularly enjoyed the descriptions of America’s big cities, with a colorfully descriptive journey through Venice through the fresh eyes of a sixteen-year-old and the frenetic energy of New York City as Andrew struggles to establish a career path as a dancer.

What I enjoyed most about this book is how the author is comfortable with his vulnerabilities and doesn’t shy away from discussing his insecurities growing up. He reminisces about friendships through his surfing adventures and mentors who contributed to the quality of his experiences. Pacholyk writes a beautiful memoir interspersed with nuggets of wisdom and valuable lessons that shaped how he navigated through life. When you read Pacholyk’s exciting and enlightening memoir, you’ll feel inspired by the author’s unbridled passion for a life of energy and pushing one’s limits. I recommend Barefoot: A Surfer’s View of the Universe by Andrew Pacholyk for its impeccable, genuine narration and the author’s advice to take a chance and follow your heart.
