Kintsugi

Sharon Curcio Author Interview

Asayi: An Autistic Teen’s Journey to Topple a Shogun in Medieval Japan follows an autistic teen on a journey to challenge the oppressive regime and find her tribe and love. What are some things that you find interesting about the human condition that you think make for great fiction?

In Asayi – An    Autistic Teen’s Journey to Topple a Shogun in Medieval Japan, the main character, Asayi, presents as mute. She understands what is spoken to her and can copy text, i.e., ink Japanese characters, but in book one, she is illiterate.

So Asayi has a rare skill, but is hampered by her lack of literacy.  Not being able to speak is a severe disability in a culture that is with obsessed with perfection.  That is why Nabui constantly repeats that the Shogun “had given him a defective gift” when Yoshinori Ashikaga arranged for Nabui to marry Asayi after her father’s death.  The Shogun felt that the daughter of the late Chief Scribe needed to be placed in Nabui’s household since he was the next Chief Scribe.  Asayi’s “defectiveness” led to beatings, rape and other cruelities in Nabui’s household.  It was not until Yoshinori’s successor, Yoshimasa, came to power that the obsession with perfection came to be a bit dispelled.  Yoshimasa introduced the art of “kintsugi” in the 15th century wherein broken porcelain was repaired with gold welding to restore its wholeness and utility.

While life has many struggles, the disabled in Medieval Japan suffered through more struggles than the average person. Had Asayi not been connected through her Chief Scribe father to the power circles, she would have no doubt been killed as a child or used as a household slave. As it was her father kept her condition a secret from the court during his lifetime. Asayi’s humanity is affirmed as she learns to communicate with others by drawing. Thus Asayi adapts to her limitation and uses her prowess with the brush to have a voice.

What were some themes that were important for you to explore in this book?

Certainly, I wanted to touch upon the norm of perfection held by the aristocratic class and present its impact on an autistic young girl. I also wanted to touch upon the severe restrictions on the lives of women in this period as they were ruthlessly governed by fathers, brothers, and husbands.  When I asked a friend of mine who I worked with to teach me Japanese, he told me that I needed to learn the language from a woman. I then discovered the Japanese language spoken by women was like a different language, filled with many honorific words for males that the women were to use in conversation with men!

What is the next book that you are working on, and when will it be available?

In my next book I will be covering the theft of the Imperial Regalia from the Northern Court. Controlled by the Ashikaga family for generations by the Southern Court, which was the province of the emperor.  The regalia consisted of a sovereign sword, a many-sided mirror, and some gems.  Whoever possessed these objects had the mandate to reign, and they were coveted by each Court. Asayi goes underground to recover these objects, so another adventure lies ahead.

There’s harrowing tension in being Asayi. But join Asayi’s circle to oppose a punitive regime. Court intrigues swirl, underbelly characters from different levels of society emerge, deceptions reign, yet truth emerges at the end.

Layers of nuance unfold: the vulnerability of an autistic young woman in a merciless time period; political unrest, physical survival, secret identities, and finding one’s tribe and love while facing injustices and revolts that are just as real as today’s inequities and discontents.

The underdogs prevail in this remarkable medieval Japanese saga replete with true to life characters, political and personal sagas, and the enduring Asian cultural icon: the ghost.

‘It Ends With Us’ is a melodrama with serious undertones

The 2016 Colleen Hoover novel
was a massive bestseller. And now that book is a movie. Blake Lively stars as Lily Bloom, a woman who falls for a hot neurosurgeon played by Justin Baldoni — who also directs the film. But their relationship is complicated by the return of her old flame (Brandon Sklenar). She also has to reckon with her feelings about her abusive father and the mother who stayed with him.

For Cavaliers and royalists in seventeenth-century England, the Eikon Basilike ranked with the Bible as a sacred text. Published almost as soon as King Charles I was executed in January 1649, and purporting to be his spiritual diary, it went through innumerable editions despite the attempts of the Cromwellian regime to suppress it. The book […]

Alister in Action

Miguel Angel Hernandez Jr. Author Interview

In Spider’s Bait, a man known for helping others finds justice when the law fails to uncover corruption in the police department when he investigates a police sergeant’s deadly accident. Where did the idea for this novel come from?

The idea came from the fourth book in the Griffin Knight series, The Windy City Terror. I decided to create a side story where readers can see Alister in action.

What was the hardest part about writing a mystery story; where you constantly have to give just enough to keep the mystery alive until the big reveal?

For me, it’s coming up with ideas to keep readers invested in the story. The more books you make, the harder it becomes.

Do you have a favorite scene in this story? One that was fun to write?

The final scene between Alister Knight and the killer is my favorite. Another scene that was fun to create was when Xavier was in the Cyberverse.

What is the next book you are working on, and when will it be available?

Lashings of Hunger is the next thrilling mystery novella that I made. It is about Tyrese Randolph, an African American private detective who travels to Alaska for a winter vacation with his Caucasian girlfriend, Nicole White. He meets her family there and gets wrapped up in a new investigation as Nicole goes missing. Also, disappearances have happened before Nicole’s, and something sinister seems to be taking place, as the wolves in Juneau are acting strange. As soon as I receive an endorsement, I’ll let my book cover designer know to add it to the front cover, and then I’ll post it on Amazon.

In Seattle, secrets and danger abound, making justice elusive and blurring the line between good and evil. But amidst the chaos, Alister Knight is the one man who stands out.

While Griffin Knight is away on a case in Miami, his brother Alister takes on the responsibility of solving the death of Seattle Police Sergeant Valentina Romero. With the Killer Owls gang replaced by the even more ruthless Webheads, Alister must navigate the treacherous Seattle underworld to find the killer and put a stop to the Webheads before their power grows. But as he delves deeper into the case, he realizes there is a more dangerous enemy than he could have imagined – himself.

If you enjoyed this thrilling mystery, you’ll love Miguel Angel Hernandez Jr.’s other books, filled with complex characters and heart-pounding suspense.

Second Chances

Michael Grace Author Interview

Ashes and Miracles follows a sister of the Priest Hamlet order, who is forced to flee with the sacred Ashes of St. Arne to protect them from raiders trying to steal the holy artifact. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?

Initially, the story was going to be a globe-trotting epic featuring the Wyrmsbane brothers and Alacrity as they tried to reunite the ashes with their rightful home. However, as I was writing I realised that I had taken on a more intimate and low-stakes approach and much preferred that. Not every fantasy tale needs to be Lord of the Rings; sometimes a trip up the fantasy coastline with a friend can be equally as entertaining.

Alacrity has lived a sheltered life and must learn to survive in a world on the run with two strangers. What were some driving ideals behind your character’s development?

Initially, I had it planned that Alacrity would be stuck in a new world and being forced to learn to survive, but then I realised she was a very strong character who held true to her morals and ideals. I wanted to show how even though she was sheltered her idealism could positively impact those around her and be the driving force of others’ growth.

What were some themes that were important for you to explore in this book?

I think very clearly I was driving at an idea of family, faith, and the idea of second chances. Everyone is in a really bad place when the story starts and while not everything is resolved and there are steps to take left, through each other everyone is on the path to improvement.

Is this the first book in the series? If so, when is the next book coming out, and what can your fans expect in the next story?

This is the first book in the series, yes! Originally it started as a collaborative writing project with a friend of mine but we both completed and published our works around the same time. I’m working on a prequel at the moment, focusing back to the first Wyrmsbane and the story of how the dragons were chased from the land, you can expect to see it early next year if all goes well!

You Are SO Loved: Unfailing, Faithful Love

You Are SO Loved, by Natalie James, is a beautifully written and illustrated children’s book that gently reminds readers of God’s unconditional love surrounding them. Through tender words and vibrant illustrations, the book delivers a heartfelt message of God’s love, belonging, and self-worth, making it a perfect read for young children who need reassurance and comfort. The book emphasizes the importance of feeling loved by God and encourages readers to embrace their unique qualities and the love that exists in their lives.

One of the standout features of James’ story is the simplicity and warmth of the writing. Natalie James has a way of conveying deep emotions in a way that is accessible and soothing for children. The repetition of the phrase “Do you know how much God loves you?” throughout the book reinforces the central message and makes it stick with the reader long after the book is closed. This repetitive structure, combined with the gentle tone, creates a comforting rhythm that feels almost like a lullaby. The illustrations are another highlight of the book.

Each page is filled with bright, cheerful colors that capture the attention of young readers and complement the text beautifully. The imagery is simple yet powerful, featuring diverse characters and scenes that reflect the universal nature of the book’s message. The combination of soft, flowing lines and vibrant hues helps to create a warm and inviting atmosphere that draws readers in and makes them feel safe and loved.

Another aspect of the book that I particularly appreciated is its emphasis on not only loving God but to love everyone. This is an important concept for children to learn early on, and the book does an excellent job of conveying this message.

You Are SO Loved is a tender and reassuring book that would be a wonderful addition to any child’s library. Its simple yet profound message, combined with its beautiful illustrations, makes it a perfect choice for bedtime reading or for any time a child needs a little extra comfort and reassurance. I would recommend this book to parents who are looking for a way to remind children of the love that surrounds them and the importance of self-love.

Pigs Have Wings

Pigs Have Wings, by Kathleen Welton, is a charming and whimsical tale that follows Miz Peg, a pig with big dreams of dancing and singing. Despite the challenges that come with being a pig, Miz Peg is determined to pursue her passions. With the support and encouragement of her friends, she discovers that she is capable of much more than she initially believed.

What I love most about this book is its uplifting message about perseverance and the importance of having a support system. Miz Peg’s journey is a heartwarming reminder that even when things seem difficult, having the right people around you can make all the difference. The story is filled with positivity and optimism, making it a delightful read for both children and adults alike. The writing is engaging and accessible, with a rhythmic quality that adds to the book’s charm. The language is simple yet effective, allowing readers of all ages to connect with the story and its characters.

The illustrations, by Chau Pham, perfectly complement the narrative, bringing Miz Peg and her world to life with vibrant colors and expressive details. One of the standout aspects of Pigs Have Wings is how it subtly weaves in lessons about self-belief and the power of community. Miz Peg’s dreams might seem far-fetched for a pig, but the story shows that with determination and the encouragement of friends, even the most unlikely goals can be achieved. It’s a beautiful message that resonates well with readers and leaves a lasting impression.

Pigs Have Wings is a delightful and inspiring book that would be perfect for young readers who love stories about animals and dreams coming true. It’s also a great choice for parents and educators looking for a positive and engaging story to share with children. Kathleen Welton has crafted a lovely tale that reminds us all of the importance of dreaming big and supporting one another along the way.
