A Sailor’s Tale: Miss Judith 1888-1893 Miss Molly

A Sailor’s Tale: Miss Judith 1888-1893 Miss Molly is a fascinating collection of letters a U.S. Navy sailor wrote to his niece between 1888 and 1893. These letters vividly detail his adventures aboard various ships, describing life at sea, encounters with pirates, and interactions with diverse cultures. The narrative captures the essence of a sailor’s life during that period, blending humor, historical context, and personal reflections in a captivating manner.

One of the standout aspects of this novel is its authenticity. The author’s decision to present the sailor’s letters without significant alterations allows readers to experience the raw and unfiltered thoughts of a sailor from that era. This choice preserves the sailor’s unique voice and provides an immersive reading experience. However, this authenticity comes with occasional challenges, as some passages require re-reading to grasp the sailor’s vernacular and colloquial expressions fully. Yet, this is a minor inconvenience compared to the richness of the narrative.

The book excels in painting a vivid picture of life at sea. The detailed descriptions of the ship’s conditions, the daily routines of the crew, and the various ports of call create a vibrant backdrop for the sailor’s tales. The author’s inclusion of historical events and locations, such as encounters with pirates in the Caribbean and visits to Mediterranean ports, adds depth and context to the sailor’s adventures. These elements make the book an engaging read and informative one, providing insights into maritime history and naval operations of the late 19th century.

One of the aspects I enjoyed most was the sailor’s personality, which shined through his letters. His humor, wit, and occasional grumpiness make him a relatable and endearing narrator. The interactions with his niece, Miss Judith, and the subtle way he shares life lessons and advice add a personal and touching dimension to the narrative. The sailor’s reflections on his experiences and the people he meets provide valuable perspectives on human nature and the challenges of life at sea.

A Sailor’s Tale: Miss Judith 1888-1893 Miss Molly is a thoroughly enjoyable read for anyone interested in maritime history, naval adventures, or personal narratives from the past. The book’s authenticity, vivid descriptions, and the sailor’s engaging personality make it a standout work in its genre. I think it is particularly well-suited for history enthusiasts, maritime buffs, and readers who appreciate first-hand accounts of adventurous lives.

Stevland Martin Polite Author Interview

Named After Legends details your ascent from the Lehman Village Housing Projects to become successful in various global endeavors, illustrating that personal history does not dictate future potential. Why was this an important book for you to write?

When I started writing, I didn’t have any intentions of publishing a book. Writing was something I did for myself. It started as therapy work. And going to therapy was a decision I made for myself to get professional help in working through some of the mental blocks I was having. But in that work, something beautiful blossomed. The words I wrote about myself, for myself, ended up being the exact thing I needed to help bring me back from what seemed like rock bottom. And it was in a moment of clarity that I realized if my words could have such a profound effect on me, then I knew there was at least one other person out there that could benefit from them as well. Reflecting on how far I came made me realize how impactful my story could be for other people that come from where I come from. So I decided to put my words together in book form. Immediately after that decision, every milestone along the journey of concept to product felt like purpose. So many of us spend our lives searching for that feeling, so I knew this was a gift from God. And I couldn’t deny him when he’s done so much for me.

What were some ideas that were important for you to share in this book?

Once I decided I was going to publish I wanted to be intentional about my messaging. The main idea is that there’s this cycle of survival, healing, and thriving. Living life in survival mode is ok, but we can’t stay there. Once we survive we have to shift our energy and focus to healing, so that we can thrive. It was important for me to share that we all deserve to thrive in whatever way we see fit for ourselves. Regardless of what we’ve had to endure to survive.

I appreciated the candid nature with which you told your story. What was the hardest thing for you to write about?

The letters to my cousins who passed away were by far the hardest thing to write about. I would often get overwhelmed with emotions when writing about them and have to stop. Ruminating through memories and having to face the permanence of their physical absence sometimes became too much to bear. I couldn’t scrutinize those words as much as I did with the rest of the book. I wanted it to be honest, I wanted my love and admiration to shine through, I wanted the world to know how great they were despite their upbringing and flaws. I wanted to be sensitive to others who mourn them as well. I wanted to ease my grief by immortalizing them with my words. It was a tall order and it never felt good enough. It got to a point where I just had to trust the words.

What is one thing you hope readers take away from your story?

I hope readers get a true sense of what it means to have a growth mindset. No matter what we face in life, we can overcome it if we believe in ourselves enough to take the first step.

Living in the shadow of legends like Stevie Wonder, Martin Luther King Jr., and Malcolm X creates pressure for anyone. In Named After Legends, we witness how Stevland Martin Malcolm Polite transforms this pressure into a beacon of light.

Stevland’s fearless vulnerability sets an inspiring example. He reminds us of the importance of documenting our journeys and sharing our stories loudly as we navigate them. While part of his story tragically mirrors the realities of Black death, another part demands greater attention—his ambition, self-motivation, perpetual learning, and adventurous spirit. He navigates a world not designed for his survival, facing giants like poverty, racism, and grief. From pursuing education at the world’s top institutions to embarking on solo journeys through Japanese shrines in search of peace, he demonstrates how a “by any means necessary” mindset can help us not just survive but heal and thrive.

This is a story of resilience and empowerment. By delving into the depths of his experiences, Stevland gains the strength and knowledge to conquer any giant that obstructs his path. His unwavering self-belief, coupled with his timely and refreshing insights, will undoubtedly inspire readers to embark on their own journey toward self-mastery. I was in the mood for a mystery and the audiobook of The Desk from Hoboken by M.L. Condike grabbed my attention. A forensic genealogist, the hundred and eighty-one-year-old remains of a woman who died mysteriously in 1841, Edgar Allan Poe, and a historical desk with mystical properties… yes, please. Grab an iced coffee and see what I enjoyed about this meaty cozy mystery.

In a bid to heal from the grief of a personal loss, forensic genealogist, RaeJean Hunter, takes on a straightforward case —identify human remains found on a nearby college campus, believed to be the 180-year-old remains of Mary Rogers, a woman who died mysteriously in 1841 and was believed to have been buried in the nearby cemetery that had washed away. It should be simple enough, a project to get her back in the game.

Unfortunately, it quickly becomes anything but. In fact, it becomes downright dangerous.

Someone doesn’t want RaeJean to investigate the puzzling death of the woman whose death inspired Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Mystery of Marie Roget.” As she follows clues through four states and discovers living family members who both help and hinder her search, she quickly realizes that the secrets of Mary Rogers’ demise were never meant to be exposed.

What lengths will someone go to keep the truth buried in the past? As threats escalate and RaeJean and her family’s lives become endangered, she’s forced to follow every lead and use every skill she has to find the answers she needs before it’s too late. Using DNA from two famous New England families, historical data, modern genealogical techniques, and a little guidance from a seemingly mystical antique desk, RaeJean takes on the cold case despite being given every reason to abandon it.

After all, what truths have been hidden for 180 years that would be worth bribery, kidnapping, and even murder?

RaeJean Hunter is about to find out.

Forensic genealogist RaeJean Hunter is ready to take on a new assignment after suffering a personal loss. She accepts the case of identifying human remains found on a nearby college campus, believed to be the 180-year-old remains of Mary Rogers, a woman who died mysteriously in 1841.

Mary Rogers is believed to the woman who inspired Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Mystery of Marie Roget.” I was intrigued and while we didn’t dig as deep forensically (with the remains) as I would have liked, the mystery and RaeJean’s methods of discovery hooked me.

She used DNA from two families and modern genealogical techniques, along with interviews, journals, and more to make her determination. Only someone doesn’t want her digging. Along the way, she acquires an antique desk which provides clues as well.

The story was well paced and grabbed my attention as I listened. While I would still classify this as a cozy, the mystery offered more depth and plenty of twists. Carrie Coello is a new to me narrator but did a wonderful job of setting the tone and giving voice to the protagonist.

Fans of murder mysteries and cozy listens will want to grab The Desk from Hoboken. It’s the first audiobook in the Genealogy Mystery series and I look forward to the next one.

    About Carrie Coello

    Carrie Coello

Carrie Coello appeared in her first play at age seven, as a cranky, middle-aged fortune teller. Ever since, she’s sought out characters that enlighten, entertain, and hold a mirror up to the human condition. After spending a decade working in film, and another decade educating children, she’s come full circle as a performer, narrating audiobooks from her Seattle studio. She collaborates with authors and publishers to bring flesh and blood to words on the page, with humor and a deep understanding of what makes people tick. Carrie draws upon her own lived experience to portray lesbian and bisexual protagonists under the pseudonym Lois Ridge. As a practicing Atheopagan, she brings authenticity to books featuring pagans, witches, and earth-based spirituality. There’s a special place in her heart for the amateur sleuth, the small-town hero who pulls herself up by her bootstraps, and the teenager struggling to make sense of herself and the world around her. Let’s tell her story together.

You’re on Fire, It’s Fine: Effective Strategies for Parenting Teens with Self-Destructive Behaviors

In You’re on Fire, It’s Fine, Katie K. May tackles one of the most challenging aspects of parenting: dealing with teens who exhibit self-destructive behaviors. This book stands out with its candid exploration of the author’s personal experiences and her practical guidance for parents. May leverages her background in clinical counseling to offer insightful strategies to support teenagers through their emotional turmoil, making it a compelling read for parents feeling overwhelmed by their teens’ behavior.

May’s writing is deeply engaging and relatable, making the book not just a manual but a narrative with which many can connect. She opens with a vivid recounting of her own struggles, such as the turmoil following her parents’ divorce and her subsequent battles with self-harm and depression. These personal anecdotes ground the book in reality, making it clear that May’s advice stems from lived experience as much as from professional expertise. Her story about discovering a purpose beyond her pain when she became pregnant at twenty-six is both heart-wrenching and uplifting, providing a powerful backdrop to her professional insights.

One of the book’s strongest aspects is its emphasis on empathy and understanding. May’s chapters on “Drop the Judgments That Fuel the Emotional Fire” and “Extinguish the Flames with Validation” underscore the importance of dropping preconceived notions and validating a teen’s feelings. Her discussion on how judgmental environments exacerbate emotional issues offers a profound lesson on the impact of a supportive versus a critical home atmosphere. This empathetic approach is therapeutic and fosters a more harmonious parent-teen relationship. This straightforwardness makes her strategies accessible and actionable, providing a starting point for parents who might be at their wits’ end.

You’re on Fire, It’s Fine is an essential read for any parent grappling with a teen’s self-destructive tendencies. May’s blend of personal narrative and professional advice offers both solace and actionable steps. Her heartfelt recounting of her journey and her clear, empathetic strategies will resonate deeply with parents feeling helpless in the face of their teens’ struggles. This book is particularly valuable for those who appreciate a personal touch in self-help literature and seek practical guidance grounded in real-life experiences.

    Love and Protest

Love and Protest intertwines the lives of two young women, Harper and Libby, separated by time but united by their struggles for independence and identity. Harper, a modern teen from Hickory Springs, finds solace and inspiration in the 1960s diary of Libby, a girl who embarked on a daring journey to San Francisco during the height of the counterculture movement. As Harper delves into Libby’s past, she gains the courage to confront her own challenges and the oppressive circumstances of her life.

Author Nancy Klann-Moren’s writing shines with vivid descriptions and authentic character voices. The opening scene, where Harper stumbles upon the Second Chance Thrift Shop, is particularly evocative. The humidity of a Georgia day, the dusty nightstand with the diary, and the quaint charm of the shopkeeper all create a richly textured world. The narrative seamlessly shifts between Harper’s present-day struggles and Libby’s historical journey, maintaining a compelling pace that keeps the reader engaged.

One of the most poignant aspects of the book is its exploration of generational struggles and the quest for personal freedom. Harper’s discovery of Libby’s diary acts as a catalyst for her own transformation. The entries dated January 1 and January 4, 1967, reveal Libby’s determination to break free from her repressive environment. This historical perspective, I think, adds depth to Harper’s contemporary story, highlighting the universal desire for self-determination and the courage it takes to pursue one’s dreams.

The themes of addiction and recovery are handled with sensitivity and realism. Harper’s mother’s battle with opioids following a debilitating injury is portrayed with stark honesty. The emotional turmoil and the impact on Harper’s life are palpable. This subplot is not just a backdrop but a significant part of Harper’s growth. The narrative doesn’t shy away from the harsh realities of addiction, making Harper’s journey toward finding hope and strength all the more impactful.

While the story excels in its character development and vivid descriptions, one area that I think could be improved is the pacing in the book’s middle sections. I feel that the transitions between Harper’s and Libby’s narratives can sometimes feel abrupt, and the detailed exploration of certain subplots, like Harper’s interactions with secondary characters, occasionally slows the momentum.

Love and Protest is a compelling read for those who appreciate character-driven stories with rich historical contexts. Nancy Klann-Moren’s ability to weave together the past and present through the lives of two resilient young women is engaging and thought-provoking. This book is particularly well-suited for readers interested in historical fiction, coming-of-age stories, and narratives that tackle social issues with a heartfelt touch.

    Cora’s Christmas Challenge

For some children, making friends and collaborating with others can be challenging. However, with encouragement, they can have truly enjoyable experiences. Sally Kashner beautifully illustrates this in Cora’s Christmas Challenge. The story centers around Cora, a little girl who loves adventures more than anything else. Her mom suggests a Christmas adventure challenge, where Cora must share kindness, make a new friend, and spread the joy of Christmas. Excited about her new adventure, Cora sets off and heads to the big hill in the park to play with her friends. Suddenly, they encounter a family of bunnies feeling cold. The children help the animals, and in the process, Cora successfully completes her challenge.

Cora’s Christmas Challenge stands out for its original and fun way of teaching children about teamwork and generosity. Sally Kashner shares an adventure that reflects good cheer, a positive mindset, and the magic of Christmas. The concept of the adventure being like a challenge is particularly appealing, as it mirrors how some children perceive these activities. Cora’s vibrant personality and determination are both endearing and inspiring. The illustrations are wonderful, perfectly blending cold moments with cozy ones. The home scenes are warm and comforting, while the outdoor scenes highlight natural elements like animals and plants in a cold but fun environment. Another detail I appreciated is the inclusion of fun facts about squirrels at the end of the story, which are featured in most of the illustrations. The discussion topics section also provides several questions to encourage comprehension while reading.

Cora’s Christmas Challenge is a delightful book. This story not only teaches children the joy of helping others and taking pride in their accomplishments but also emphasizes that the best adventures are those that help us grow as individuals.

    The Mountain Mystic

In Russell W. Johnson’s gripping murder mystery, The Mountain Mystic, Sheriff Marybeth Cain, the county’s inaugural female sheriff and successor to her late husband, grapples with the unresolved disappearance of family friend Maria Ruiz—a case that predates her tenure. The saga deepens when, against better judgment, she consults a psychic, leading to revelations that challenge her to veer off the traditional investigative path and risk her career for the sake of truth.

As the second installment in the Mountaineers Mystery series, this novel captivates with its intense narrative and complex protagonist. Marybeth is portrayed as both fearless and flawed, a combination that adds layers to her character and keeps readers engaged. Her dynamic with her deputy injects a lighter tone into the otherwise somber storyline, balancing the gravity of their investigations with moments of camaraderie. Johnson’s talent shines through in his ability to develop tangible characters and craft a tight plot peppered with unexpected twists.

The Mountain Mystic moves at a brisk pace, interweaving suspenseful detective work with profound character studies. This blend of action and introspection ensures that the narrative is as thrilling as it is thought-provoking. With its sophisticated plot twists, richly drawn characters, and vivid setting, this book will appeal to enthusiasts of the mystery genre looking for a story that both entertains and challenges.

The Mountain Mystic delivers a compelling mix of suspense and depth, making it a standout addition to the Mountaineers Mystery series. Johnson’s adept storytelling not only entertains but also invites readers to ponder the complexities of justice and truth. This novel is a must-read for those who appreciate a mystery that offers both intellectual engagement and heart-pounding moments.

    The Possibility of Reincarnation

    Kathy Bolte Author Interview

Ringo’s Rainbow Journey: A Memoir of Our Border Collie’s Return to His Soul Family illustrates the multifaceted relationship between humans and their animal companions, capturing the essence of love, loss, and the indelible mark a pet leaves on a family. Why was this an important book for you to write?

I was compelled to write this book because of the extraordinary story my husband and I lived through. We began communicating with our dogs and cats through a very gifted animal communicator. Through these conversations, we learned some extraordinary things that 1) validated my beliefs in living, loving, and the potential for an afterlife. 2) turned my lifelong atheist/skeptic husband into someone who now believes in the unseen/unprovable mysteries of life. This book is primarily about the return of our elder male border collie, through reincarnation, coming back to us in the body of our sweet little female border collie. But, beyond that, it is an entertaining walk through the lives of many of our pets, our connection to them, and the unconditional love we have for them.

What were some ideas that were important for you to share in this book?

Well, this is a little unique and perhaps tips the “believability scale” for some people, but it was my dog who urged me to write this book because he had two important lessons to teach humans: 1) Bodies come and go, but the soul is eternal. 2) Gender fluidity is a natural and normal thing in the animal kingdom. Humans need to get over their judgment of it.

What is your background and experience in writing, and how did it help you write Ringo’s Rainbow Journey?

I was in the corporate world, as a Vice President for a staffing company. In that role, I did a lot of writing and public speaking, teaching, and mentoring. I retired from that career in my late forties and became a yoga teacher. During this second phase of my career life, I began writing for an online publication, specializing in “the mindful life” – Elephant Journal. I became a featured writer for them, with over 90 articles published within about a two-year period. I stopped writing for them when I began writing Ringo’s Rainbow Journey. Writing has always come easy to me. My readers tell me that I write in a very conversational style, eliciting the feeling of two friends talking over coffee. The time I spent writing for Elephant Journal likely helped me hone my skill for writing my memoir.

What is one thing you hope readers take away from your story?

I want everyone who reads my memoir to understand how intelligent and multi-faceted our animals are. When they read my words, I believe they will come to see the depth of character, of understanding, of emotional facility, and ability to love profoundly, not only in the stories I tell about my own animals, but also as they look into the eyes of their own precious dogs and cats. I also hope it will open people’s eyes to the possibility of reincarnation and that this could help people navigate loss and grief with a little more optimism and understanding of the bigger picture.

Kathy’s husband, George, yearned for a Border Collie. This is the story of the birth and life of their beloved Ringo, the transition out of his body and rebirth as little Nina, a female Border Collie.

As Ringo and their matriarchal cat, Solo, faced health challenges and moved toward their end-of-life, Kathy and George were referred to Amanda Reister, a gifted pet communicator, to learn how best to care for their aging pets. Suddenly, everything changed.

The conversations they’ve had with each of their pets, through Amanda, were nothing short of miraculous and completely changed their paradigm.
