In 1962, Marilyn Monroe finds herself in a tense meeting in the Oval Office with President John F. Kennedy, Jackie Kennedy, and his trusted advisor, Brett Longley. It’s revealed that she has been impregnated through a secret love affair with the president. With the Kennedy family focused on preserving their elite status, she’s given the choice of getting an abortion or faking her death and vanishing from public life forever.

She chooses the latter and raises their son, Clyde, on a secluded ranch in Montana that’s under 24/7 surveillance from the Secret Service. After growing up in complete isolation, Clyde finally learns the truth behind his strange upbringing eighteen years later when Marilyn is lying on her deathbed. Determined to live a normal life, he hatches a daring plan to escape and reveal his story to the world, but he must do so before those more powerful than him can permanently silence him.

Sophia Rose’s Review

Two big names in 1960’s America are at the heart of an exciting alternate history debut tale. Samuel Lockwood asks the question, “What if JFK and Marilyn Monroe had a secret affair and the living proof is a baby on the way? How would the then powers that be handle such an eventuality and what is the rest of the story for their son?” I found a historical thriller with such a premise too irresistible to pass by.

The Hidden Heir begins in 1981 with an attention-grabbing scene before delving back into the past and the plot made one fateful 1962 day in the White House during the Kennedy administration.  The brief dip into the past set the table for what came eighteen years later when Clyde Monroe was ready to admit the world into his family secret.

The premise of The Hidden Heir was strong and pulled me in right away.  It builds on the rumors of just such a liaison between JFK and Marilyn and there are already conspiracy theories a plenty surrounding the Kennedys, so why not? I was particularly startled to imagine Jackie Kennedy as the antagonist who was plotting first to protect the Kennedy political chances, pay back one of her husband’s mistresses, and then protect her own skin by keeping the truth suppressed, but the author made her a convincing.  He wrote her with nuances, so she wasn’t a cardboard cutout villainess.

Clyde Monroe, the innocent caught up in a conspiracy plot, was a sympathetic character. He’s grown up hidden away with only three adults- one is his mother and the other two are little more than prison guards. Now, he has to outwit those guards, other government operatives, and make someone who can get his story out believe him. I was on tenterhooks as he made his escape and then formed some surprising allies. I felt the weight of the price that is paid when they went up against a powerful enemy with lots of resources.

The Hidden Heir was a quick and easy read, leaning hard on the action, but it was also very much a debut effort. It changed narration quickly at times to catch the perspective of nearly each character in a scene. It read like a rookie effort and could have been smoother. However, there was rich promise and a solid gem of a story that kept me interested and reading through to the nail-biter climax and end. If you like the idea of alt history blended with thriller, you definitely want to pick up The Hidden Heir.

A Diver Like Me

Dive into the exciting world of Sanaa Chege’s newest release, A Diver Like Me, a fantastic children’s book about Sanaa, a young Black girl with a passion for diving. We follow along as Sanaa learns the ropes, competes in thrilling diving competitions, and faces the unique challenges of being one of the few Black divers in the sport. With tons of practice, dedication, and a great deal of support from her awesome family, Sanaa hopes to inspire other children of color to take the plunge and join the diving community.

The way Sanaa tells her story is engaging and full of heart. Readers can feel her excitement and determination, especially when she describes her first dive and the joy of winning her first competition. In Chapter 3, for example, she shares how thrilled she was to hear her scores and how proud she felt snagging first place. Her enthusiasm is infectious and make readers want to cheer her on every step of the way.

One of the most enjoyable parts of Chege’s story is how she details the importance of representation and inclusion in sports. Sanaa’s thoughts on why there aren’t many Black divers and her dreams of seeing more diversity in the sport are both eye-opening and inspiring. In Chapter 5, she addresses the special connection she feels when she sees other Black families at diving meets, illustrating the importance of visibility and community.

The illustrations by Nils Britwum are just as delightful as the story itself. They capture all the energy and excitement of Sanaa’s adventures, from her focused moments before a dive to the sheer joy of her victories. These vibrant pictures are sure to catch the eyes of younger readers.

A Diver Like Me is a must-read for young readers, especially those who love sports and stories about chasing dreams. ImmiGRIT: How Immigrant Leadership Drives Business Success

In ImmiGRIT, Ukeme Awakessien Jeter expertly explores the intertwined themes of immigration and leadership, crafting an insightful narrative on the unique advantages that immigrant leaders bring to the table. Unlike many works that treat these subjects separately, Jeter merges them, revealing how the immigrant experience can significantly enhance leadership qualities. This book serves not only as a tribute to immigrant resilience and innovation but also as a practical guide for business leaders aiming to harness the full potential of immigrant talent. The book opens with a historical perspective on immigration, highlighting its profound impact on societal and economic development. From the British settler John Rolfe in the 1600s to modern tech giants like Sergey Brin of Google and Eric Yuan of Zoom, Jeter illustrates how immigrants have been pivotal in shaping industries and driving innovation. These narratives are not merely historical footnotes but powerful reminders of the ongoing contributions of immigrants to the global economy. “Powerful” aptly describes this book.

Jeter also offers a personal perspective from her time as an international student, providing a timeline of her immigrant experience up to her becoming a lawyer and beyond. Her story is a poignant exploration of resilience, adaptability, and determination—qualities that many immigrants embody and that are critical attributes of effective leadership. This personal journey culminates in a compelling argument for the indispensable role of immigrant leaders in today’s globalized society.

Human resource professionals, talent developers, and diversity, equity, and inclusion advocates will find ImmiGRIT to be a treasure trove of insights. Jeter outlines practical tips and real-life examples to create a roadmap for maximizing the benefits of a diverse workforce. Her work is a call to action, inspiring efforts to support immigrant talent, address biases, and facilitate inclusivity in the workplace. One of the most notable aspects of this book is the author’s bravery. Jeter courageously challenges existing leadership paradigms and advocates for a new approach that recognizes and nurtures the unique strengths of immigrant leaders. Her no-holds-barred approach aims to transform how we perceive and cultivate leadership in the modern workplace.

Ukeme Awakessien Jeter’s eloquent and groundbreaking discussion of the immense value of immigrant leadership is a must-read. Her analysis is well-informed, enriched with storytelling, and highly persuasive. This book is both essential and inspiring.

Modesty Jack

Modesty Jack is the second compelling installment in D.E. Ring’s series, The Scandalous Memoirs of General John Torrance. With a masterful blend of history, geopolitics, and espionage, Ring crafts a narrative that keeps readers riveted from beginning to end.

Set in the 1880s, the novel unfolds through the memoirs of the fictional Jack Torrance. The narrative opens with Torrance leaving Canada alongside the royal party, bound for London. Written as first-person entries in his memoir, Torrance’s story not only draws readers into his world but often addresses them directly, enhancing the immersive experience. While the setting predominantly remains in London, Jack’s adventures also take him to Cairo, with each twist and turn adding layers of intrigue and excitement.

Upon his arrival in Britain, Jack is assigned to a seemingly insignificant intelligence department within the British Intelligence Service. However, it isn’t long before he becomes entangled in a larger, more dangerous political upheaval, propelling his tale into a dramatic and perilous realm.

Ring deftly interweaves historical fiction with references to real historical events, enriching the memoir’s authenticity and grounding the plot in a time of significant geopolitical tension between the British and Russian empires. This tension permeates the storyline, as espionage and political maneuvering unfold against a backdrop of historical verisimilitude. Alongside the intrigue and pulse-pounding moments, the evolving love story between Jack and Princess Louise adds emotional depth, as their romance navigates the constant scrutiny and challenges posed by their surroundings.

Modesty Jack excels with its intricate blend of political intrigue and covert operations, making it a gripping read for a wide audience. Whether you’re a seasoned thriller enthusiast or new to the genre, this book promises to keep you enthralled. I highly recommend picking up Modesty Jack—just be prepared to be so captivated that you won’t want to put it down until you’ve turned the final page.

The Canticle of Ibiza

The Canticle of Ibiza is an intriguing tale set against the vibrant backdrop of Ibiza. The story follows John, a man from the Upper East Side of Manhattan, who abruptly leaves his life behind to seek answers from his long-lost friend, Gunther, rumored to be somewhere on the island. His journey is filled with eccentric characters, unexpected encounters, and a deep dive into the hidden, mystical side of Ibiza.

From the first page, the author hooks readers with vivid descriptions and quirky scenarios, such as John’s encounter with a magenta speedo-clad waiter. The novel’s charm lies in its detailed portrayal of Ibiza, from the wobbly tables of a nameless café to the serene, unspoiled beaches. Kurian’s writing is immersive, painting a picture of Ibiza that feels simply magical.

One of the standout aspects of the book is author Justin Kurian’s ability to create memorable characters. Angela, the mysterious woman with a sixth sense, and Lent, the fervent believer in Wiccan traditions, are particularly compelling. Their interactions with John are filled with humor, tension, and depth, revealing their complex personalities and the rich tapestry of life in Ibiza. Kurian’s characters are not just quirky for the sake of being quirky; they add meaningful layers to the narrative, making John’s journey all the more engaging.

The pacing of the story is another strong point. Kurian balances introspective moments with lively, almost surreal encounters, keeping the reader engaged throughout. The scenes are well-crafted, often leaving the reader as bewildered as John, which adds to the immersive experience. The blend of reality and the mystical creates a unique atmosphere that is both enchanting and unsettling. I feel some readers might find the eccentricities of the characters and the surreal nature of the events a bit overwhelming, though others will more than appreciate the novel’s unique flavor.

The Canticle of Ibiza is a captivating read for those who enjoy literary fiction with a touch of magical realism. Kurian’s depiction of Ibiza is enchanting, and his characters are wonderfully eccentric and complex. This book is perfect for readers who appreciate detailed settings, well-developed characters, and exceptionally well-constructed narratives.

Helping the Next Generation

Kimberly Harms Author Interview

Are You Ready? How to Build a Legacy to Die For combines real-life stories with practical, actionable advice for readers to use when planning for their own deaths and estates. What were some goals you set for yourself as a writer in this book?

I wrote this book after suffering the loss of my mother and son to suicide and my husband to a broken heart after the death of our son.  Since, hopefully, I am the next in line to go in my family, I wanted to research and work to make sure my children and grandchildren were emotionally prepared for my death.  After quizzing my family and friends about their feelings about death and their preparedness for their own death, I believe that most of us are not prepared.  By getting ready for the time when we will no longer be in this world, setting our survivors up for success, and minimizing the conflict, complicated grief, and aggravation (when they have to get rid of our stuff or can’t find our important papers) they suffer, we can show our love to them beyond the grave.

I found part three, “The Death Prepper’s Workbook,” especially meaningful in drawing attention to the discussions that need to be had. Have you considered expanding this into a stand-alone workbook to help others with planning for the future? If so, what else would you include to help readers with this process?

Actually, I have already written a stand-alone workbook and will be presenting a seminar to my church next week.  I hope to get two versions, one secular and one faith-based, soon.   With the workbook, I want to include envelopes to hold our birth certificates, marriage certificates, titles, etc., so that everything will be in one place.  Our children will thank us!!!

What is one thing that you hope readers take away from Are You Ready? How to Build a Legacy to Die For?

I hope that readers understand that we all have a purpose in life: helping the next generation to succeed and thrive when we are gone.

We all know the importance of life insurance to make certain our loved ones are financially secure after we pass on, but what can we do to ensure they are emotionally secure without us? Are You Ready? How to Build a Legacy to Die For is designed to help us do just that. It is a book in three parts.

Part One encourages us to focus our lives on building positive legacies such as love, peace, trust, education, and hard work. We will meet incredible people who have lived lives full of hope and resilience and have passed these traits on through multiple generations.

Part Two examines the process of death itself and asks the question: “Is death a grim or gentle reaper?” The fascinating research on near death experiences and life after death is explored with the understanding that this topic yields different beliefs.

Part Three is a workbook to help us prepare our loved ones for a life lived without us. It includes a complete checklist and discussion of traditional legacy documents such as a will, health care directive, and password record as well as an emotional life insurance plan to psychologically help our loved ones survive and thrive in a time when we are no longer
physically present with them. The workbook includes handy templates to encourage us to write legacy letters, reconciliation letters, and even a letter to help our survivors understand the mourning process.

Don’t wait to get ready. Our graduation from life comes unexpectedly. This book will help you be prepared to graduate with honors.

What’s your legacy?

Honestly, I am not a big fan of billionaire stories, but siblings Chase and Alex Stone grew up away from their estranged billionaire father. Each made their own mark on the world before their father died and left his empire to them and a half-sibling they didn’t know they had. The two of them will need to learn their father’s business and secretly find their brother before the board discovers their shares are split three-ways.

I loved the premise and the Stone family from the beginning, and was delighted to meet Piper Maddox and her protective dog. Piper was their father’s assistant before he fired her prior to his death. She knows the ins and outs of the business, contacts and schedule. That is why Chase is determined to rehire her. The chemistry was there from the start, but I loved the back-and-forth banter while they negotiated terms.

I loved Piper and her no sass attitude. Chase is charmed by the woman, but doesn’t want to cross boundaries, making the buildup to that first kiss delightful. Sizzling chemistry, almost kisses and saltine crackers, had me all in.

We meet secondary characters like Alex Stone, and her bestie, along with hotel billionaires who are down to earth, all about family and offer to lend a helpful hand. Meanwhile, we have the mystery of their half brother and Piper’s secret dilemma. I found myself fully invested and hoping for a happily ever after.

All Our Tomorrows was an addictive read filled with spice, heart and a swoon-worthy romance. I highly recommend taking this one along on vacation. I am looking forward to the Forgotten One, the next book in the Heirs series, releasing November 2024.

The Fine Art of Grieving

In The Fine Art of Grieving, Jane Edberg guides readers through the deeply emotional landscape of mourning her son Nanda’s untimely death. Through evocative vignettes, Edberg captures the profound depths of maternal grief, using photography and various art forms to navigate her emotions and memories. The narrative seamlessly intertwines past and present, illustrating moments with her family and her solitary struggles with loss. This culminates in a powerful exploration of personal transformation and acceptance.

Edberg’s The Fine Art of Grieving is a moving exploration of a grieving mother’s journey. One of the book’s most compelling aspects is Edberg’s use of art as a means to process her grief. Her vivid descriptions of photography sessions, art installations, and spontaneous artistic creations offer a unique and engaging framework for understanding her experience. This artistic lens not only enriches the narrative but also highlights the transformative power of creativity in the face of profound loss. While the book’s emotional intensity and detailed grief rituals powerfully enhance its authenticity, I feel some readers might find these aspects deeply resonant and immersive. For those experiencing similar losses, these elements may evoke a sense of connection, underscoring Edberg’s genuine and heartfelt portrayal of her mourning process.

The varied settings—from the intimacy of the family home to the expansiveness of natural landscapes—serve as poignant backdrops that echo the themes of life, death, and rebirth. Supporting characters like Rachel, Roger, and the friends who participate in Edberg’s art projects add depth to the narrative, underscoring the importance of community and shared experiences in the grieving process.

The Fine Art of Grieving is a beautifully raw and inspiring work. Edberg’s heartfelt prose and innovative use of art make this a significant read for those interested in the impact of grief and the cathartic power of creativity. Her courageous exploration of pain stands as a testament to the enduring strength of love.
